Startability and harmful emissions are the main issues in diesel engine development under cold conditions. The characteristics of combustion with multiple injection were investigated under cold start conditions. For quantitative analysis, the in-chamber pressure profile was measured and combustion visualization using direct imaging was accomplished. With multiple injection, the peak in-chamber pressure and heat release rate were increased compared to single injection. In addition, the period of flame luminosity detection was shortened using multiple injection. Combustion by main injection was improved with an increase in heat released by pilot combustion when the pilot injection quantity was increased. Finally, an increase in injection pressure also showed the possibility of combustion improvement. On the other hand, an increase of in the pilot injection quantity and injection pressure can cause an increase in harmful emissions, such as HC and CO due to wall wetting. Therefore, more sensitive calibration will be needed when applying a multiple injection strategy under cold start conditions.

Currently, in order to meet the reinforced emissions regulations for harmful exhaust gas including carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) as a greenhouse gas, technologies for reducing $CO_2$ emission and fuel consumption are being developed. Gasoline direct injection (GDI) systems have the advantage of improved fuel economy and higher power output than port fuel injection gasoline engine systems. The aim of this study is to examine the performance and emission characteristics of a lean burn GDI engine equipped with spray-guided-type combustion system. Stable lean combustion was achieved with a late fuel injection strategy under a constant operating condition. Further improvement in specific fuel consumption is possible with the introduction of multiple fuel injection strategies, which also increases hydrocarbon (HC) and nitrogen oxide ($NO_x$) emissions and decreases carbon monoxide (CO) emission.

This paper examines the effects of a multi-stage pilot split injection strategy on combustion and exhaust emission factors in a single-cylinder diesel engine. One analysis noted that in the single-injection condition, the maximum in-cylinder pressure and rate of heat release were highest. The pilot injection quantity was evenly divided, showing a tendency to decrease as the number of injections increased. In another injection condition, when the multi-stage pilot split injection strategy was applied, IMEP, engine torque, and combustion increased. The COVIMEP was greatest with the lowest combustion efficiency. The combustion ability was poor. In a single injection condition, the O2 concentration in the exhaust gas was the lowest and the CO2 was the highest. When the multi-stage split injection strategy was applied, the low temperature combustion process proceeded, and the oxidation rate of CO2 decreased while the emission level increased. In a single injection condition in which a locally rich mixture was formed, the HC emission level showed the highest results. A 55.6% reduction of NOx emission occurred under a three-stage pilot injection condition while conducting a multi-stage pilot split injection strategy.
An investigation on spray characteristics of fuels which diesel and di-methyl ether (DME) with change of injection pressure used the multi-injection in constant volume combustion chamber (CVCC). Diesel was already used famous fuel which we could use. DME showed similar features with diesel like as cetane number, auto-ignition temperature. High cetane number of diesel and DME could make possible to compression ignition. DME showed different atomization from diesel due to evaporating pressures and boiling points. Experiments were carried out in CVCC equipped with Delphi solenoid 6-hole type injector and the spray characteristics of diesel and DME were tested the various pre and pilot injection. Terms of injections and a number of injections in multi-injection has been controlled. Experiments were performed in 2 types that 1500 rpm, 2000 rpm and under the condition of injection ranging from 100 bar to 500 bar. From the results of this experiment diesel showed longer spray penetration than DME. That result showed different of atomization speed DME and diesel. Result of high injection pressure condition showed similar spray characteristics diesel and DME. After this investigation, new conditions and experiments using laser light to go forward and add the fuels like as the biodiesel and diesel and DME blend.

A multi-step quasi-global mechanism is developed for the kerosene/oxygen combustion analysis including dissociation products. Reaction constants of the global reaction are determined to have agreement with experimental data. The mechanism is used for the numerical analysis of the combustion flow field of the kerosene/oxygen shear coaxial injector. The results from high-resolution numerical analysis confirmed qualitatively that the recess enhance the fuel/air mixing and combustion efficiency by the increased flow instabilities.

The improvement of emissions, fuel economy, and combustion noise is a primary target in the development of heavy-duty diesel engines. Multiple injection has been introduced as one of the most promising strategies for this goal. In this research, various multiple injection methods were applied to achieve the optimal strategy in terms of emissions, fuel economy, and combustion noise. In the case of one pilot injection, the smoke emission deteriorated, while the NOx emission was reduced. In the case of 2 pilot injections, the NOx and smoke emissions were reduced by 73% and 84%, respectively. In this case, the combustion noise was analyzed with the maximum pressure-rise rate, and the fuel economy was evaluated with the help of the indicated specific fuel consumption. A 15%:15% 2-pilot injection strategy accomplished improvements of 32.9% for NOx, 60.4% for smoke, 1.95% for fuel consumption, and 19.4% for combustion noise compared to the case of single injection. Based on the data, an optimal injection strategy will be developed for a greater operating range in future work.

In this study, injection quantity, rate and spray image of multiple injections which are important design parameters for a piezo type injector have been investigated. Interval of injections and a number of injections in multiple injection strategy has been controlled to verify interaction of each injection. Spray characteristics of multiple injections have been researched through optical process with a high speed camera in a high pressure chamber. In addition, a method of RMS(Root Mean Square) process has been used for comprehending the distribution of injection easily. As a result, in case of piezo type injector, characteristics of injection quantity according to charging voltage and the difference of injection quantity between single and triple injection were confirmed. Also, injection rate for increasing injection duration was confirmed. And spray characteristics of multiple injections were improved; multiple injections were possible in a shorter time interval between each injection. With this study, a possibilities of more accurate multiple injection control would be expected.

The GCSC injectors studied in this paper are those applied to the combustion chamber of staged combustion engines. Liquid fuel is injected through tangential holes along the outer wall of the GCSC injector forming a swirling sheet and oxygen rich gas generated by a preburner enters axially through the center orifice of the injector to form a gaseous jet. The spray characteristics of GCSC injectors under ambient/high pressure conditions and the effect of recess on spray characteristics have been examined in this paper. These results are expected to be used as fundamental data to develop of a staged combustion engine.

Experimental investigations were conducted to understand the multi-staged combustion characteristics of a swirl-stabilized double cone premixed burner nozzle used for industrial gas turbines for power generation. Multi-staged combustion is implemented by injecting the fuel through the existing manifold of the side slots as well as through the apex of the cone with two fuel injection angles which are slanted or axial. NOx and CO emissions, and wall temperature distributions were measured for various fuel distributions and operating conditions. Results show that NOx emissions are decreased when the fuel distribution to the apex is 3% of the total amount of fuel, which is due to more uniform fuel distribution inside the nozzle, hence less hot spots at the flame. NOx emissions are rather increased when the fuel distribution to the apex is 8% of the total amount of fuel for axial fuel injection by occurrence of flash back in premixing zone of burner.
