  • As the usefulness of big data analysis has been drawing attention, many studies in the business research area begin to use big data to predict firm performance. Previous studies mainly rely on data outside of the firm through news articles and social media platforms. The voices within the firm in the form of employee satisfaction or evaluation of the strength and weakness of the firm can potentially affect firm value. However, there is insufficient evidence that online employee reviews are valid to predict firm value because the data is relatively difficult to obtain. To fill this gap, from 2014 to 2019, we employed 97,216 reviews collected by JobPlanet, an online firm review website in Korea, and developed a machine learning-based predictive model. Among the proposed models, the LSTM-based model showed the highest accuracy at 73.2%, and the MAE showed the lowest error at 0.359. We expect that this study can be a useful case in the field of firm value prediction on domestic companies.

For this, the study analyzes the frames of frames of crime news on Chosun Daily and Hangyurae Newspaper for 2 years. The data are collected using KINDS, and include 265 crime articles involving woman. According to the results of this research, the episodic frames are used in the most of crime news. The five frame devices are founded in the episodic frame articles; the male subjectivity and the female objectivity, the male-oriented perspectives which reporters have, the abused sexual details and sensationalism, the emphasis of women body's fragility which imply woman's unavoidability as victims, and finally, blaming women who are victims of crimes. And in the articles of thematic frames, the similar frame devices are found. In particular, they only emphasize the problem of crime and fail to suggest a concrete resolution. Finally, the study discusses the findings relating to the patriarchal news making convention and the commercialism of newspaper industry. The two newspapers have been pursuing quite different political lines in Korean society. It is generally considered that Hangyurae newspaper is progressive and Chosun Daily is conservative. However, this study reveals that the way dealt with women in the crime news are not different. It is concluded that Korean newspapers still produce the gender discourse based on male-centric perspective and patriarchal ideology.

  • This study utilized a semantic network analysis for Korean major newspaper articles concerning 'Bernie Sanders'. 'Bernie Sanders' promotes conservative values of 'Americana' as well as the progressive values of 'relieving inequality', and thus, perhaps he is a subject on which ideological differences between the press can be distinctively manifest. Upon comparison of the priority of frequency between the conservative press and progressive press, the conservative press frequently used the expressions, 'socialist' and 'black man', whereas the progressive press frequently used the expressions, 'inequality' and 'problem'. Both the conservative press and progressive press displayed particularly different semantic compositions with the term, 'Korea'. The progressive press aimed to express the criticism of social problems and established politics identified by Sanders in relation to the 'Korean' society, whereas the conservative press criticized the blunt expressions stating that a specifically named politician resembles Sanders, and the specific party and term of 'Korea'. A completely different disposition of reports from different perspectives and context was ascertained, regardless of the use of the same terms. Thus, it is demonstrated that the semantic composition of the press on a specific issue displays significant differences according to their ideological disposition.

  • The purpose of this study is to collect and analyze information related to water leaks that cannot be easily accessed, and utilized by using the news search results that people can easily access. We applied a web crawling technique for extracting big data news on water leakage accidents in the water supply system and presented an algorithm in a procedural way to obtain accurate leak accident news. In addition, a data analysis technique suitable for water leakage accident information analysis was developed so that additional information such as the date and time of occurrence, cause of occurrence, location of occurrence, damaged facilities, damage effect. The primary goal of value extraction through big data-based leak analysis proposed in this study is to extract a meaningful value through comparison with the existing waterworks statistical results. In addition, the proposed method can be used to effectively respond to consumers or determine the service level of water supply networks. In other words, the presentation of such analysis results suggests the need to inform the public of information such as accidents a little more, and can be used in conjunction to prepare a radio wave and response system that can quickly respond in case of an accident.

This study aims to analyze how newspapers, television and internet media in Korea covered water-related news, focusing on the type of articles, themes, news sources, and news values. As a result, the mostly mentioned theme in the media was the discussion about suitability of water as a drinking water, followed by impurified water, governmental policy on water, coverage on the water pipe, and result of examination of water quality. Also among newspapers, broadcasting, and the internet, the internet medium showed the most negative tone in covering water. Stories written by journalists with expertise were less than 1% whereas stories by ordinary journalists were mostly found. In conclusion, to cover public issues like water desirably, it is necessary to bring up journalists with expertise in environmental issues, to diversify news sources, and to do investigative reporting rather than reporting appealing to audience's amusement.
