  • This study is a nonequivalent-comparison-group-quasiexperimental-study which tries to establish the effect of a laughter therapy program on the blood pressure, depression, and the life quality of elderly women in rural area. The subjects are 49 females aged 65 living in S-myeon, 24 and the other 25 of whom are put into an experimental group and a comparison group, respectively. The laughter therapy was performed to the experimental group for 60 minutes a time, twice a week for 13 weeks, from January 5 to April 5 in 2011. To find out the intervention effect, the program was analyzed by a t-test. The result showed that the therapy lowers the systolic blood pressure, relieves depression, and enhances the life quality of them. Therefore, it is expected that the therapy, a useful program contributing to the health improvement of elderly women, can be made use of nursing intervention in clinical trials or communities.

  • In this paper, we propose antecedent factors that influence health promotion behaviors among rural older adults by gender. The study analyzed data from the 'Need Assessment Survey for the Development of Customized Care Programs for Rural Older Adults' conducted by the Rural Development Administration. The analysis utilized data from 502 individuals aged 65 and older residing in rural areas. The analysis method used SPSS 25.0 program to conduct descriptive statistics, chi-square analysis, correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis. The analysis results showed differences between men and women in practicing health promotion behaviors. For men, lower age, lower education level, living with a spouse, and participating in social activities were associated with higher levels of health promotion behaviors. For women, older age, better self-rated health status, and participating in social activities were associated with higher levels of health promotion behaviors. This study provides baseline data to promote health promotion behaviors among rural older adults according to gender and suggests policy and practical implications based on the findings.

This study of participants were 42 elderly women aged 65 years old or older in K province(Experimental group= 20, Control group = 22). The data collected from July 17 to August 23, 2017. The experimental group participated in a total of 12 sessions of traditional play program for 50minutes twice a week. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, $x^2$-test, and independent t-test. There were significant differences in depression(t=-4.86, p<.001) and sense of belonging(t=4.611, p<.001) of participants between experimental group and control group after end of the program. Therefore, the program was effective in improving depression and sense of belonging in rural women. We propose further study to confirm the usefulness of the program by expanding the area.

  • This study observed elderly women's adaptation process on separation by death in rural areas through grounded theory approach and developed its entity theory. Participants for this study were 14 elderly women who have lost their husbands in the last 12 months. The study was conducted for 8 months starting January 2010. The research data were collected by in-depth interview and with help of local community's nurses who were in charge of taking care of the participants. The collected data were analyzed by applying Strauss & Corbin's grounded theory (1998). As a result of study, 80 concepts, 28 subcategories, and 12 categories were deducted during open coding process. Adaptation process on separation by death was process of 'finding a way to live alone' which used strategy of 'attempting a make changes in life', and 'embracing the situation' which were influenced by conciliatory conditions of 'degree on economic condition', 'change in health', and 'supporting system' which focuses on phenomenon of 'bearing life alone' which is influenced by context condition of 'marital chemistry of couples during lifetime', and 'the couple's leadership during lifetime' together with casual conditions of 'the fall of wall'. The adaptation process accordance to time flow were divided into 4 steps which were step of 'shock and release of emotions', step of 'longing and resentment', step of 'resignation and acceptance', and step of 'life's restructure'. Above results suggest right directions for welfare for the aged and process of 'finding a way to live alone' for participants by controlling several factors and using intervention strategy, and provided basic data required for developing and applying practical welfare mediation.
