Since Kit Fine's influential paper, Essence and Modality (1994), many philosophers have doubted the prospects of modalism, according to which we can analyze the concept of essence with that of de re modality. However, some philosophers have tried to save modalism against Fine's counterexamples seriously. In this paper, we examine two such attempts which appeal to some kind of 'impossible possibilities.' We argue that such attempts have strong tendency to end in either a metaphysical picture which is very similar to Fine's or a concept of essence which is quite different from Fine's. For this reason, we claim that Fine has no reason to worry about such attempts.

In this paper, we first understand the concept of imperialism as a 'a dialectical relation between territorial and capitalistic logics of power', as suggested by Harvey, and its history with three phases, the last of which would be seen as the phase of new imperialism. Secondly, we examine the New Security Strategy of the U.S which can be seen as a reflection of the new imperialism of the U.S. with its neo-conservative Bush administration, and explain the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq as the implementation of the new imperialism. And then we take a close look on the current geopolitical situation of East Asia, especially North and South Korea, Japan and China, in terms of the new imperialist foreign policy of the Bush administration. Finally, we consider the limits of the new imperialism of the U.S. and globally emerging movements of anti-imperialism.

Frege's logicism has been frequently regarded as a development in number theory which succeeded to the so called arithmetization of analysis in the late 19th century. But it is not easy for us to accept this opinion if we carefully examine his actual works on real analysis. So it has been often argued that his logicism was just a philosophical program which had not contact with any contemporary mathematical practices. In this paper I will show that these two opinions are all ill-founded ones which are due to the misunderstanding of the theoretical place of Frege's logicism in the context of contemporary mathematical practices. Firstly, I will carefully examine Cantorian definition of real numbers and Frege's critiques of it. On the basis of this, I will show that Frege's aim was to produce the purely logical definition of ratios of quantities. Secondly, I will consider the mathematical background of Frege's logicism. On the basis of this, I will show that his standpoint in real analysis was much subtler than what we used to expect. On the one hand, unlike Weierstrass and Cantor, Frege wanted to get such real analysis that could be universally applicable. On the other hand, unlike most mathematicians who insisted on the traditional conceptions, he would not depend upon any geometrical considerations in establishing real analysis. Thirdly, I will argue that Frege regarded these two aspects - the independence from geometry and the universal applicability - as those which characterized logic itself and, by logicism, arithmetic itself. And I will show that his conception of real numbers as ratios of quantities stemmed from his methodological maxim according to which the nature of numbers should be explained by the common roles they played in various contexts to which they applied, and that he thought that the universal applicability of numbers could not be adequately explicated without such an explanation.

A dialetheic approach to the sorites paradox is to understand a borderline case as a true contradiction. In order to accommodate this approach, the possibility of an alternative that does not involve a contradiction should be considered first. Beall presents an alternative that has all virtues of dialetheic solution without contradiction. I do not think his alternative has no contradiction. Using the inclosure schema I will show it. Furthermore, I will show that all alternatives which do not accept the existence of cut-off point imply a contradiction. This means that we have to accept a true contradiction as long as we accept the intuition of vagueness, especially, what is called 'tolerance'.

이 논문은 매디가 왜 수학적 실재론을 포기하고 그녀 특유의 수학적 자연주의를 표방하게 되었는지를 탐구하려 한다. 이 문제에 관하여 널리 받아들여지고 있는 한 가설에 따르면, 매디의 입장 변화는 콰인-퍼트남 필수불가결성 논증을 비판하고 포기함으로써 야기되었다. 필자는 이 가설이 지닌 설득력을 인정하지만, 그것만으로는 실재론의 포기의 충분한 이유가 될 수 없다고 생각하며, 그 대신 과학과 수학의 유비 문제가 매디의 입장 변화를 이해하는 데 더 나은 조망을 제공한다는 점을 보여주고자 한다. 이를 위해서는 콰인과 괴델에 크게 빚졌던 실재론자 시절 매디의 사유가 얼마만큼 수학과 과학의 유비에 지배되었는지를 살펴보아야 하는 동시에, 왜 매디가 이 유비를 포기함으로써 실재론을 포기하게 되는지를 이해하여야 한다. 아울러 이 유비의 포기에 대한 다소의 비판적 검토를 통해 매디의 수학적 존재론의 지적 여정을 왜 필자가 존재론적 퇴보라 믿는지에 대한 몇 가지 이유가 시사될 것이다.

비트겐슈타인의 규칙따르기 개념에 대한 올바른 이해는 그의 후기 철학의 궤적을 살피는데 있어서 중요하다. 비트겐슈타인의 규칙따르기 문제에 대해 회의적 해석으로 유명한 크립키는 "탐구"의 201절을 문제 삼으며 '역설'의 문제를 새로운 형식의 철학적 회의주의로 간주했다. 본 논문은 규칙의 역설에 대한 크립키의 논증이 비트겐슈타인의 관점과 무엇 때문에 충돌하는지를 밝히면서 그와 함께 비트겐슈타인이 '규칙의 역설'을 제시한 궁극적 이유를 규명하는데 있다. 규칙의 역설에 대한 크립키 논증의 의의와 한계를 비판적으로 다룸으로서 필자는 다음과 같은 점을 주장할 것이다. 비트겐슈타인에게 있어서 규칙은 우리들의 행동을 이끄는 지침의 역할을 하며, 규칙의 문제를 추론과 연관시켜 수학이 엄격한 규칙을 따르는 인간의 지적 활동이며, 규칙에 대한 비트겐슈타인의 관점은 귀납적 회의주의와 무관하다. 이런 맥락에서 비트겐슈타인을 회의주의자 혹은 상대주의자로 평가하는 것은 문제가 있다. 그런 점에서 비트겐슈타인은 오히려 어떤 이론이나 선입견에 사로잡히지 않은 봄의 방식을 강조한 철학자로 평가하는 것이 옳다.

본 논문에서 필자는 기존의 양상 허구주의의 번역 체계가 가지고 있는 세가지 난점을 극복할 수 있는 양상 허구주의의 새로운 번역 체계를 제시한다. 이 세 난점이란 (1) 많은 세계들의 존재를 받아들이지 않을 수 없게 된다. (2) 세계 간의 비교를 하게 하는 양상 진술문을 제대로 번역할 수 없다 (3) 어떤 양상 진술문에 내해 잘못된 진리치를 부여한다 이다. 이 세 난점을 극복하기 위한 필자의 제안은 세계-양화사의 범위 안에 등장하는 양화사들이 주어진 세계 내의 사물들만을 범위 내에 포함하는 루이스의 초기 번역 체계나 비한정적 양회사를 도입하는 루이스의 후기 번역 체계를 받아들이는 대신, 양화사를 조금씩 조금씩 비한정시키는 (unrestrict) 시키는 것이며, 필지 공식 번역 체계는 우주 (세계)의 부분전체론적 합으르 정의되는 "다우주(muitiverse)"라는 새로운 용어를 도입함으로써 얻어진다. 필자의 공식 번역 체계는 다음과 같다: P가 가능하다 iff PW에 의하면 P가 잠인 다우주가 존재한다 P가 필연적으로 참이다 iff PW에 의하면 모든 다우주에서 P가 참이다 마지막으로 필자는 비한정적인 세계 간의 비교를 하게 하는 양상 진술문을 적절하게 번역하기 위해서 필자의 번역 체계에 약간의 수정을 가한다.

지표성은 두 가지 다른 철학적 관심에서 연구되어왔다. 하나는 지표어가 어떤 방식으로 그것이 지시하는 바를 지시하는가를 이해하는 의미론적 관심이고, 다른 하나는 지표어가 인식체계에서 담당하는 역할을 이해하는 행위 이론적 관심이다. 페리가 여러 문헌을 통해서 관심을 가져왔던 문제는 이 두 가지 철학적 관심을 모두 만족시키는 통일된 이론을 제시하는 것이었다고 생각된다. 그러나 이 두 관심사가 서로 구별된다는 점이 충분히 고려되지 않았으며, 왜 하나의 이론에서 함께 다루어져야 하는가에 대한 논변도 제시되지 않았다. 지표성 문제에 대한 페리의 해결책은 의미론적인 것이고 는 이를 통해 행위이론의 문제도 함께 해결된다고 주장한다. 그의 의미론적 해결책은 여러 가지로 변화되어 왔지만, 필자는 이 모두 만족스럽지 못하다는 것을 보이고자 한다. 페리의 이론이 가지고 있는 어려움의 근원은 필자가 '의미론적 토대주의'라고 부르는 입장을 페리가 고수하고 있기 때문이다. 지표성 문제에 대한 올바른 접근은 의미론적 토대주의를 처음부터 포기하는 것이라는 것이 필자의 제안이다.

I examine the notion of truth in the intuitionistic type theory and provide a better explanation of the objective intuitionistic conception of mathematical truth than that of Dag Prawitz. After a brief explanation of the distinction among proposition, type and judgement in comparison with Frege's theory of judgement, I examine the judgements of the form 'A true' in the intuitionistic type theory and explain how the determinacy of the existence of proofs can be understood intuitionistically. I also examine how the existential judgements of the form 'Pf(A) exists' should be understood. In particular, I diagnose the reason why such existential judgements do not have propositional contents. I criticize an understanding of the existential judgements as elliptical judgements. I argue that, at least in two respects, the notion of truth explained in this paper is a more advanced version of the objective intuitionistic conception of mathematical truth than that provided by Prawitz. I briefly consider a subjectivist's objection to the conception of truth explained in this paper and provide an answer to it.

유통구조의 궤멸, IMF한파, 게다가 경쟁적인 할인판매로 출판계는 그야말로 초토화 위기에 놓여 있다. 연초부터 일기 시작한 할인판매의 불꽃이 결국 출판.서점업계를 사그리 불태우게 되리라는 우려도 심각하게 제기되고 있는 상황이다. '도서정가제'가 자본주의 시장의 논리 앞에 무력해지고 있는 것이 현재 우리 출판계의 현실이기도 하다. 과연 자유시장 경쟁논리에서 '책'은 예외일 수 있는가. 세계 여러나라들의 경우를 통해 올바른 판단의 근거를 삼아보고자 한다.
