Our country has become an aging society with unparalleled speed, compared to other advanced countries. Many of the elderly are physically, economically, and psychologically dependent; this dependence is a factor that increases the cost burden not only on the children and relatives of the elderly, but also at the social level. Under the prevailing environment of the family-oriented informal support system, the burden of support for elderly parents who rely on limited resources is highly likely to lead to abuse. Until now, dealing with the abuse of senior citizens has been mostly a one-off approach through media rather than academics. Therefore, this study attempts to take an objective approach to the elder abuse problem (which has so far been dealt with in the media as a form of domestic violence) in order to grasp the specificity and factors of elder abuse and to present the Korean situation with regard to elder abuse. In addition, this study seeks to find ways to prevent elder abuse in formal and informal ways.

The purpose of this study was attempted to confirm the relationship between medical workers' knowledge of the elderly, burn out, job satisfaction and awareness of elder abuse. The study was conducted on 371 doctors, nurses, and nurse's aides working at eight health centers, 15 nursing hospitals, and 30 university hospital institutions. Looking at the relationships between variables, this study found that knowledge of the elderly was a significant positive correlation with awareness of elder abuse(r=.14, p<.01), and burn out was a significant negetive correlation with job satisfaction(r=-.55, p<.01) and awareness of elder abuse(r=-.10, p<.05). Job satisfaction was a significant positive correlation with awareness of elder abuse(r=.13, p<.01). Awareness of elder abuse was a significant positive correlation with knowledge of the elderly(r=.14, p<.01) and was a significant negetive correlation with burn out(r=-.10, p<.05). As a result of this study, it is expected that Hospital workers can have a positive perception and attitude toward the elderly by reducing their burnout and improving their job satisfaction.

Using "2017 National Survey of the Elderly", the study conducted survey among 75 or older 3,023 males and 1,295 females. It used multivariate logistic regression analysis to identify the factors affecting suicidal ideation. As a result, the study found that ties with their offspring, the number of chronic diseases, being abused or not, depression and living with or without espouse had significant effects on their suicidal ideation and abuse was the largest factor. Therefore, in order to reduce suicide rate of 75 or older seniors, more active attention should be rendered to their physical, socioeconomic and emotional health problems, and measures to reduce elderly abuse should be sought. In particular, institutional improvement and revitalization of elderly counseling institutions are needed to reduce elder abuse
Background: The purpose of this study was to identify the risk factors influencing cognitive function and life satisfaction in elderly living alone. Methods: It was cross-sectional descriptive study by using secondary data from the 2014 national survey of Korean elderly. The study sample consisted of 2,249 subjects who live alone, aged 65 years old and over. Data were analyzed frequency analysis, ${\chi}^2$-test, t-test, ANOVA and Logistic regression analysis. Results: The risk factors that significantly influenced cognitive function were old age, bereavement, lack of education, no regular exercise and low socio-cultural activity satisfaction. The risk factors that significantly influenced life satisfaction were no bereavement, lack of education, no work, negative evaluation of health status, diagnosis of depression and no regular exercise. Also experience of emotional and economical abuse, neglect of financial support and low cognitive function were identified risk factors of life satisfaction. Conclusions: The elderly living alone with risk factors of cognitive decline should be interested. To prevent or delay cognitive impairment, regular exercise and socio-cultural activities were recommended. It was suggested that the promotion of cognitive function, appropriate work and exercise, and social efforts to prevent abuse and neglect can contribute to improving life satisfaction of elderly living alone.
Purpose: The purpose of this secondary analysis study was to examine the incidence of abuse and the contributing factors for that abuse among the Korean elderly with stroke. Methods: Data were derived from the 2008 Korean National Survey on Older Adults. The participants were 934 community-dwelling elderly with stroke. Data were analyzed using the Rao-Scott $x^2$-test, simple logistic regression and multiple logistic regression with the PASW 18.0 complex samples analysis module. Results: The prevalence of elder abuse was 13.5%. Emotional abuse (10.0%) was the most frequently reported abuse, followed by financial neglect (3.8%), caring neglect (3.3%), financial abuse (2.1%), and physical abuse (1.9%). 44.6% of the perpetrators of emotional abuse were coresidential family members. Participants without spouses (odds ratio=2.05, 95% CI=1.14~3.68), those without diabetes (odds ratio=2.24, 95% CI=1.15~4.39), and depressed participants (odds ratio=2.72, 95% CI=1.34~5.52) were more likely to be abused. Conclusion: Emotional abuse was the most frequently reported type of abuse while physical abuse was least frequent among the elderly with stroke. Nurses caring for the elderly with stroke should be aware of the types of abuse and risk factors such as lack of spouse and incidents of depression.
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to research how elder abuse affected the abuse results (self-esteem, depression, somatization) through coping strategies. Method: A convenient sample consisted of 499 subjects from 65 to 85 years old. Data was collected using structured questionnaires from July to August, 2002. The SPSS WIN 10.0 version was used for data analysis. Results: The pathway of elder abuse affecting elder's self-esteem was researched by passive coping, emotional abuse, financial abuse, and physical abuse as the variables that directly affected self-esteem. The pathway of elder abuse affecting elder's depression was researched by passive coping, aggressive coping, verbal abuse, and neglect as the variable that directly affected depression. The pathway of elder abuse affecting somatization was researched by neglect, emotional abuse, and aggressive coping as the variables that directly affected somatization. Conclusion: We should develop a systematized intervention program so that elders can learn positive coping in their abuse circumstance.
Purpose: This study was designed to identify the predictors of elderly women's intention to report elder abuse. Methods: A cross-sectional survey design was used. The participants were 204 elderly women aged over 60 living in Seoul. Data were collected using self-reported questionnaires by convenience sampling. Data were analyzed with frequencies, $x^2$ test, t-test and binary logistic regression. Results: Logistic regression analyses showed perception of elderly welfare law, perception of seriousness of elder abuse, subjective economic status, and exposure to elder abuse information were significant predictors of elderly women's intention to report elder abuse. Conclusions: The results of study suggest that the provision of information related to elder abuse including elderly welfare law is crucial toward elderly women in preventing elder abuse.
