In this observational study targeting 81 elderly patients with dementia, each patient's participation in activities, emotion, and problem behaviors were observed for 4 hours per day with 20 minutes interval, which leads to 6,804 data based on 12 times a day for 7 days. According to this study, 90.1% of the participants were suffering from severe cognitive impairment. Their emotions were scored 4 out of 7. They mainly participated in activities such as sitting or lying down, which had no specific purpose, but they showed the most positive emotion when involved in social activities. The most frequent types of problem behaviors were repetitive behaviors and making noises, and the frequency of their behaviors were different depending on the time. There were significant correlation between cognitive functions, emotions, and problematic behaviors. Therefore, it is necessary to find effective ways to increase participation in activities, induce participation in positive emotional activities, and reduce problem behaviors manifested most prominently each hour of the elderly patients with dementia residing in nursing homes.

  • The elder abuse draws an increasing concern as the elderly population grows rapidly, and increasing demands to provide long-term care to the impaired elderly are imposed on the families. This study compares Korean American elders' and their adult children's perceptions of possible elder abuse under care-giving situation, and related help-seeking behaviors using five scenarios developed by the author. The subjects consist of ten elders and their ten adult children including daughters-in-law who live in Los Angeles, the USA. Content analysis reveals very similar help-seeking behaviors of the two generations within the family despite the substanally generational difference towards the perceptions of elder abuse under care-giving situation. Mann-Whitney test shows a significant difference in the perceptions of elder abuse between the elderly and their adult children. It means that the elderly are substantially less likely to perceive a given situation as abusive than their adult children would. But there is no significant difference between the elderly and their adult children in their intended use of formal sources of help. Implications for gerontological social work practice and program development are discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the differences of the explicit and implicit attitudes towards the elderly according to age and gender. For this research, 64 college students and 64 older people completed Explicit Attitudes Rating Scales (likability/ trustfulness/ companionship/ group membership), Explicit Preference Test, and Young-Old Implicit Association Test. In both the groups, however, there were no significant correlations between explicit and implicit age attitude. In addition, college students showed an explicit preference for the old over the older participants whereas only interaction effect(age and gender) was appeared on implicit preference toward older people. The theoretical and practical implications and limitations of this study were discussed.

  • A sudden increase of old people's free urban railway transportation resulted from the acceleration of aging trend causes the chronic deficit. As continuous deficit caused by the free urban railway transportation of old people is expected, a fairness problem about the fare system of using public transportation is issued because only the urban railway provides free-rides to them, which is contrast to bus-riders paying full payments. Therefore, the study intends to draw an alternate to solve the problem of the free urban transportation uses by calculating an appropriate fare ratio between the two transportation modes, which is expected to alleviate the fairness issue between the urban railway and the bus.
