  • Despite a growing trend in elder mistreatment, research about the problem and its effects on the victims has been sparse. Notably missing are the perspectives of older adults themselves, whose perceptions and responses to elder mistreatment are greatly affected by social and cultural context. The purpose of this study is to examine factors associated with older persons' perceptions of elder mistreatment and subsequent help-seeking behaviors. Six hypothetical scenarios featuring elders were the basis of interviews with 124 older persons, drawn by a quota sampling strategy. Findings indicated that older persons perceived situations of physical abuse (87.9%), financial abuse (86.3%), and psychological abuse (66.1%) to be elder mistreatment, yet respondents showed less sensitivity to elder mistreatment that took the form of physical mistreatment within a couple (47.6%), neglect (40.3%), and self-neglect (16.9%). Certain scenarios yielded less intention to seek help: namely, physical mistreatment within a couple, neglect, and self-neglect. Older persons' personal characteristics, social factors, and cultural factors exerted significant influence on both perception and help-seeking behavior. Perception was identified as a key factor that significantly influenced help-seeking behavior. Findings point to awareness of cultural and social context for success in elder mistreatment prevention, intervention, and policy design for this population.

  • This study describes visiting caregivers' perceptions and reporting of elder abuse. From January 13 to February 10, 2014, data were collected from 249 visiting caregivers working at homes by using a structured questionnaire. The caregivers' perceptions of abuse were high overall. Physical abuse was the most common type, followed by financial, verbal, negligence, and emotional abuse. Most visitors recognized that it is important to require reporting for the prevention of elder abuse, but most of them had no experience with reporting abuse, and the agencies that they knew were mostly the police. A majority of the visiting caregivers had attended an elder abuse program and recognized the importance of such programs. The caregivers hoped that the programs would have specific examples of how to deal with elder abuse and family counseling methods, and other practical content for their work. Programs should focus on coping with individual cases, proper counseling methods, and awareness of elder abuse.

  • The elder abuse draws an increasing concern as the elderly population grows rapidly, and increasing demands to provide long-term care to the impaired elderly are imposed on the families. This study compares Korean American elders' and their adult children's perceptions of possible elder abuse under care-giving situation, and related help-seeking behaviors using five scenarios developed by the author. The subjects consist of ten elders and their ten adult children including daughters-in-law who live in Los Angeles, the USA. Content analysis reveals very similar help-seeking behaviors of the two generations within the family despite the substanally generational difference towards the perceptions of elder abuse under care-giving situation. Mann-Whitney test shows a significant difference in the perceptions of elder abuse between the elderly and their adult children. It means that the elderly are substantially less likely to perceive a given situation as abusive than their adult children would. But there is no significant difference between the elderly and their adult children in their intended use of formal sources of help. Implications for gerontological social work practice and program development are discussed.

  • This study aimed to understand the increasing number of elder abuses in South Korea, where entry into the super-aged society is imminent, by implementing text mining analysis. Korean Academic journals were obtained from 2004, the establishment year of the senior care agency, to 2021. We performed natural language processing of the titles, keywords, and abstracts and divided them into three segments of periods to identify latent meanings in the data. The results illustrated that the first section included 81 papers, the second 64, and the third 104 respectively, averaging 13.8 annually, which increased its numbers from 2014 until the decrease below the annual average in 2020. Word frequency demonstrated that the common keywords of the entire segments were 'elder abuse,' 'elders,' 'influences,' 'factors,' 'recognition,' 'family,' 'society,' 'prevention plans,' 'experiences,' 'abused elders,' 'abuse prevention,' 'depression,' etc., in consecutive order. TF-IDF indicated that 'influences,' 'recognition,' 'society,' 'prevention plans,' 'abuse prevention,' 'experiences,' 'depression,' etc., were the common keywords of all divisions. Network text analysis displayed that the commonly represented keywords were 'elder abuse,' 'elders,' 'influences,' 'factors,' 'characteristics,' 'recognition,' 'family,' 'prevention plans,' 'society,' 'abuse prevention,' and 'experiences' in the entire sections. concor analysis presented that the first segment consisted of 5 groups, the second 7, and the third 6. We suggest future directions for elder abuse research based on the results.

  • The purpose of this study was attempted to confirm the relationship between medical workers' knowledge of the elderly, burn out, job satisfaction and awareness of elder abuse. The study was conducted on 371 doctors, nurses, and nurse's aides working at eight health centers, 15 nursing hospitals, and 30 university hospital institutions. Looking at the relationships between variables, this study found that knowledge of the elderly was a significant positive correlation with awareness of elder abuse(r=.14, p<.01), and burn out was a significant negetive correlation with job satisfaction(r=-.55, p<.01) and awareness of elder abuse(r=-.10, p<.05). Job satisfaction was a significant positive correlation with awareness of elder abuse(r=.13, p<.01). Awareness of elder abuse was a significant positive correlation with knowledge of the elderly(r=.14, p<.01) and was a significant negetive correlation with burn out(r=-.10, p<.05). As a result of this study, it is expected that Hospital workers can have a positive perception and attitude toward the elderly by reducing their burnout and improving their job satisfaction.

  • With the introduction of long-term care insurance, the number of long-term care facilities and the elderly using it is increasing. Nevertheless, there was a lack of concern and research on elderly abuse and how to affect the life of the elderly in long-term care facilities. The study analyzed the data collected from 278 senior citizens of 44 long-term care facilities in two regions. The analysis was conducted to analyze the relationship among elderly abuse, service quality, service satisfaction and life satisfaction. An analysis showed that some of the elderly experienced elderly abuse, especially sexual abuse. The experience of abuse affect the perception of the service quality, service satisfaction and life satisfaction of the elderly. The elderly experienced abuse was undervalued in service quality, service satisfaction and life satisfaction.
