  • The intergenerational support exchange depends on elder's objective conditions and social context, and its effects are diverse. I argue that not only capacity such as health condition and economic status but also relational properties among parent(s) and adult children are important to determine their reciprocal support exchange. Seoul area is selected, and 730 elders are interviewed to be analyzed quantitatively. The survey data are collected based on the structured questionnaire. Findings are partly supportive to the arguments presented above. The relational properties, especially coresidence, the number of adult children, and contact frequency independently influence reciprocal support. The better health conditions of parent(s) are, the more support to adult children is given. The economic status is related to financial support exchange only. The types of intergenerational support exchange include dependant, balanced, and generalized reciprocity. The most important determinant of the reciprocity is the elders' health condition.

  • Korea is having entered the Ageing Society since 2000 and expected to be the Aged Society by 2019. Proliferation of the nuclear families, attitude shift of supporting the senior people and higher participation of married women in public life as well as the steadily increasing senior population have caused the need for development of the facilities or housings for the senior people. This study is based on the assumption that the congregate housing as one of the options for those senior people who are healthy enough do not need the nursing home. For the questionnaire survey, the preference of 500 Korean pre-senior people on spatial planning elements of units for the senior congregate housing was investigated. The collected data are analysed using SPSS 10.0 for Windows to deduce frequency, percentage, average, Chi-squared test with cross-tabulations. The results of this study were as follows; Most of respondents preferred to the size of 11-15pyung(for single), 21-25pyung(for couple). The type of spatial composition was preferred one-room type(for single), 1-2 bedroom type with kitchen (for couple). And they preferred L/DK type. Also, they preferred furnished units not to bring their own furniture when relocating to the senior congregate housing, which was somewhat different result from previous studies. • The purpose of the study is to investigate the characteristics of the elderly housing preference and spatial usage to plan floor space of the elderly housing by the respondents of the ages 50 to 79. Based on the result of the study, it is suggested that the elderly housing should be located in regards to social environmental factors rather than natural environmental ones. There are differences in preference for the space planning of housing units such as the number of rooms and bathrooms, and floor space depending on income level, so the housing should be differently planned to accept the difference of preference. On the other hand, there is not notable difference in furniture preference for each space. In the characteristics of spatial usage according to behaviors, high-income respondents demonstrate the characteristics of spatial usage in accordance with a western lifestyle. Thus, behaviors such as sleeping, watching TV, resting, reading, conversation, and receiving guests, occur using such things as beds, sofas, and dinning tables. On the other hand low-income respondents show a mixed western and traditional lifestyle. Thus many behaviors are done on the floor of bedroom and livingroom in addition to using furniture such as a sofa and chairs. Therefore, the way of spatial usage has to be reflected in the floor space planning. At least floor space of the provided rooms should be planned to accommodate the behavior of the elderly even though all of the rooms preferred can not be provided.
