  • A major part of permanent way maintenance effort is justified by inadequacies in the track substructure and in particular in drainage conditions, which need to be put right across the entire network. In most cases nowadays, improvements of the substructure can be carried out on rail to a high standard of quality. However, this entails substantial movements of material for the removal of spoil and provision of new material. In the future, recycling of old material on site, and use of geosynthetics, will be necessary to help considerably reduce this volume.

  • An active application of concrete track is being expected for the future constructions of Korean railroad. For the successful concrete track construction in earthwork areas, proper reinforced subgrades, which effectively distribute train loads to subground, should be installed. In this paper, behaviors of concrete track on the reinforced subgrade with the standard stiffness and depth were investigated through numerical analyses. The appropriateness of the reinforced subgade was evaluated by analyzing the distributions of the settlements and vertical stress beneath the concrete slab.

  • The selection of geogrid types for the use of reinforced rail roadbed is important in the design of railways. Also, the problem of the construction damage on the geogrid during construction is raised by the field engineers. Therefore, laboratory model tests were peformed to investigate the efficiency of the bearing capacity and construction damage. As a result, it was found that the bearing capacity of the rigid geogrid reinforced railroad ballast shows 1.54 times higher than that of the flexible geogrid reinforced case. In addition, there were no noticeable damage during construction.

  • Ballasted track is constructed in consideration of the maintenance. The application time and frequency of MTT(Multiple Tie Tamper) and BS(Ballast Cleaner) depend on track geometry measurements. This paper presents the application of Ground Penetrating Radar(GPR), Falling Weight Deflectometer(FWD), and Portable Ballast Sampler (PBS) to evaluate the effects of track geometry due to substructure deterioration and to build a reliable substructure evaluation system.

  • Various amplitudes and frequencies of axle loads are applied to the domestic conventional line. Vertical stresses and settlements on the subgrade may be changed depending on the variation of axle loads. This paper introduces the research results to estimate vertical stresses and settlements on the subgrade with numerical analysis(Distinct Element Method), full scale test, and field test.

  • The purpose of this study is to perform development of techniques for reduction of ground vibration caused by highspeed railway. At the first year, we have researched for the statically and dynamically characteristics of materials that could reduce the propagated ground vibration. The tire chip and blast furnace slag had been selected as the reduction material. And we have tested these materials by computer analysis.

  • A series of the experimental study were peformed to evaluate engineering properties of geobag which is used to the urgent restoration of the failed roadbed. In this study, the suitable geobag size was proposed to the 44cm wide by 66cm long and the suitable filling ratio of geobag was proposed to the 80% based on the loading test. Also a series of the model test were carried out to investigate the characteristics of strain behavior and the distribution of earth pressure of the geobags roadbed.

  • The frost heaving pressure can be a problem for weakening of the railroadbed material. In this study, upon freezing a saturated soil in a closed-system from the top, a considerable pressure was developed. This pressure is induced as a result of a curved ice-water interface. This study was initiated to investigate the soils frost heaving expansion pressure and physical characteristics resulting from freezing and freezing-thawing cycle process. Weathered granite soils, sandy soil were used in the laboratory freezing test subjected to thermal gradients under closed-systems.
