  • This study examined the relationship between resilience, emotional work, and attitudes toward caregivers caring for the elderly. Data collection was conducted from November 01, 2018 to December 31, 2018. The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS Win 21.0 program. The attitudes toward caring for geriatric subjects were $3.56{\pm}.90points$ out of 5, $3.23{\pm}.74points$ out of 5 for emotional work, and $3.94{\pm}.40points$ out of 5 for resilience. The attitudes toward caring for geriatric patients were related to resilience (r= .294, p<.001). Resilience (${\beta}=.360$, p= .002) and work type (${\beta}=-.282$, p= .001) had a significant effect on the attitudes toward caring for the elderly (F=7.5355, p<.001). The explanatory power of these variables was 15.6%. The results of this study suggest that interventions may be necessary to improve the attitudes of the caregiver toward caring for the elderly.

  • This work reports an oven drying test performed on weathered granite soil from Yecheon, Korea, in order to find an effective method for measuring the weight of pure soil particles. After samples were oven dried, weights measured following desiccation using the method specified by the Korean Industrial Standard (KS F) were compared with weights measured without prior desiccation. Soil samples exposed to air for 45 min after oven drying absorbed moisture from the air and gradually increased in weight. When a desiccator was used, results measured 30 s after exposure to air indicated weight increases of 0.103-0.735% (depending on the particle size of the soil) relative to equivalent samples measured without desiccation. Using a desiccator after oven drying leads to overestimation of the pure soil weight. Therefore, measuring the weight of a soil sample immediately after oven drying without using a desiccator can reduce the error of weight measurement.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics of elderly motorcycle accidents according to data from elderly inpatients to prepare prevention measures for the elderly against injury in motorcycle accidents. Chi-squared test, independent sample t-test, and canonical correlation analysis were performed on the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency's National Hospital Discharge In-depth Injury Survey data from 2015 to 2019, from which the records of 1,384 elderly inpatients hospitalized because of motorcycle accidents were obtained. intracranial injury(S06) was the most common care and treatment characteristic for both age groups. The most frequent injury site was the head and neck, and the most frequent injury type was a fracture. The above findings show that prevention education and policy formulation at the national level are necessary to identify and manage the factors of elderly motorcycle accidents. This study provides basic data for developing measures and policies to prevent and reduce injuries, making it significant for public health causes.

  • With the prolonged spread of the new coronavirus infection worldwide and the entry of the super-aged society, smart health care, which combines IT technology for senior health care and the health care industry, is emerging as a solution to the aging problem. The development of non-face-to-face care services using Ai is on a global trend, not in some countries, and the form of care services for the elderly using AI artificial intelligence technology is changing rapidly. The convenience of AI-based care services for the elderly is expected to be highlighted, and the technology and market are expected to develop significantly. As the number of single-person households is increasing, the shortage of welfare workers for the elderly is emerging as a social issue. It is presented as a vision to solve long-term social problems such as the labor shortage of elderly care workers as well as the advantages of convenient care services using IT technology. Therefore, we would like to propose the development direction of care services for the elderly as a case study of care services for the elderly and a countermeasure against the super-aging age.

  • Objectives: Much attention has been paid to sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) in the elderly because of its high prevalence. It is expected that SAS in the elderly has both similarities and differences compared to SAS in the young or middle-aged populations. The aim of this study was to elucidate the characteristics and consequences of SAS in the elderly. Methods: In this study we included 210 young or middle-aged adults between 23 and 59 years (20 women and 190 men) and 65 older adults between 60 and 83 years of age (16 women and 49 men). Respiratory disturbance indices (RDIs) of the study subjects were more than 5 in an overnight polysomnography. They completed the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Informations about body mass index (BMI), neck, waist, and hip measurements, and blood pressure were obtained. Results: No difference was observed between older adults with SAS (older SAS) and adults aged under 60 with SAS (SAS aged under 60) in RDI, apnea index, % time of oxygen saturation less than 90%, and PSQI. Obstructive apnea index and oxygen desaturation index (ODI) were lower in older SAS. Compared to SAS aged under 60, lowest oxygen saturation and central apnea index were higher in older SAS, but they were statistically not significant. BMI and neck circumference were significantly lower in older SAS compared to SAS aged under 60. Diastolic blood pressure was lower in older SAS compared to SAS aged under 60 with no difference in systolic blood pressure. Older SAS showed lower scores in ESS than SAS aged under 60. Significant correlation was observed between RDI and BMI in SAS aged under 60, but not in the case of older SAS. The relationships between RDI and neck circumference, systolic and diastolic pressure, and ESS were similar. Conclusions: The elderly with SAS were not over-weight and there was no relationship between body weight and the severity of SAS. Also, the behavioral and cardiovascular effects of SAS were not marked in the elderly, which might be partly explained by decreased ODI and relatively higher lowest oxygen saturation in older SAS. The normal aging process, aside from increased body weight, might contribute to the development of SAS in the elderly with modest complications.

  • We analyzed the social issue 'image of the elderly' using Big Data and Social Network Analysis. First, we analyzed the words extracted by the text mining technique by inputting the keyword 'elderly'. As a result of analysis, the image of the elderly viewed through media such as cafes, blogs, etc. Representing the trend of the public was using the word 'Senior' the most. The image of the elderly is expressed using the word having the highest frequency in the top 10, "The elderly are 'Senior' people who are respected by society, they are organized to earn money, to earn their qualifications, to health, and to 'Seniors' who desire to work healthy up to 100 years old". The purpose of this study is to differentiate from the existing analysis method by analyzing the macro-level image of the elderly including the social discourse by collecting vast amount of data and analyzing it with the social networking technique. When the image of the elderly that the public perceives is positively expressed as 'Senior', it can be said that the direction of the current elderly policy is evaluated as a desirable direction. On the other hand, it was able to feel the 'desire' of the public who wanted to be evaluated. Therefore, the policy direction of the elderly to be applied in the future should be the policy that enables the elderly to be perceived as 'Necessary existence' in society by taking on social roles. In addition, we proposed to implement the policy of the elderly that reflects priorities such as job creation, welfare, and alienation that can activity and maintain health.

  • This paper, in the situation of deepening poverty and worsening income inequality, aims to find the impact on income inequality of main income sources such as public income, market income and family income in the elderly and propose polices for weakening the income inequality in the elderly. Main results are as follows. First, Gini coefficients of each income sources in the elderly are total income's 0.4801, public income's 0.4071, market income's 0.6736 and family income's 0.1855. Income inequality in the elderly population is serious in the total income, public income and market income areas. Second, after excepting for public income in total income, Gini coefficient is 0.4864. after excepting for market income in total income, Gini coefficient is 0.3609. And after excepting for family income in total income, Gini coefficient is 0.5784. When market and public income are excepted from total income, Gini coefficient alleviate. Therefore, market income and public income are the major causes of income inequality in the elderly. But, family income alleviate the income inequality in the elderly. In order to alleviating the income inequality of the elderly, we must try to increasing the market income. For example, government must to supply job opportunities for the elderly of low-income.

  • Normal somatic cells proliferate for a limited number of doublings in culture and then enter an irreversible growth-arrest state called replicative senescence. Replicative senescence has been believed a reason for the limited cellular turnover and deterioration of tissue function in aged animals. However, there is no experimental evidence supporting this assumption. Furthermore, cells from aged person have been poorly characterized with an exception of the cases of T cells. In this study, we examined cell biological changes occurring in replicative senescence of fibroblast strains originated from a new-born (NHF-NB) and a 87 year old man (NHF-87). NHF-87 (and the cells from a 75-year old) proliferated to smaller population doublings and with longer doubling times than NHF-NB did. At early passages, NHF-87 exhibited a low senescence-associated ${\beta}-Gal$ (SA ${\beta}-Gal$) activity and lipofuscin level, typical markers for cellular senescence. Furthermore, they maintained low levels of lysosome and reactive oxygen species (ROS). All of these levels increased dramatically in the late passage NHF-87 quite similarly as those in the late passaged NHF-NB did. These results indicate that most cells originated from the aged maintain a phenotype of the cells originated from new-born donors and undergo replicative senescence with the same kinetics as that of the cells from new-born. It is also indicated that not SA ${\beta}-gal$ activity but cell proliferation rate may be qualified as a biomarker for cells aged in vivo.

  • This study explores the images of the elderly held by non-elderly. Unlike previous studies on the topic, it considers various dimensions of the images including health, personality, intelligence, and economic ability. The study also attempts to examine factors affecting the images by age groups of non-elderly as well as the dimensions above. The data come from a nationwide survey on the Korean Elderly conducted by Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs in 2004. Analysis of the samples aged 20-64 reveals that the overall image of the elderly are negative across four dimensions. Nonetheless, differences by dimensions are also observed. Young people in their 20s are more likely than other age groups to have negative views on elderly's health. In the meanwhile, the middle aged are more likely to have negative views on elderly's economic ability. Multivariate analysis based on legit regression model shows that the images of the elderly are affected by age, place of residence, co-residence with older persons, attitude toward life in old age. The findings from this study contain important implications for the improvement of the elderly's images in rapidly aging society.
