  • This study examines the influence of smartphone use in old age on satisfaction with relationships with spouse, children and social acquaintances among Korean older adults. Data on older adults aged 60 and over, who live in Seoul, was collected through a questionnaire survey and 674 cases were analyzed. The effects of smartphone use on satisfaction with these three types of inter-personal relationships was tested using a multiple regression analysis, controlling for sex, age, marital status, education, employment status, income and health. The results showed that the smartphone use of older adults did not affect spouse relationship satisfaction, but positively affected both children relationship satisfaction and satisfaction with social acquaintance relationship in old age. This suggests that the positive effects of smartphone use on inter-personal relationships in old age work only to improve relationships with children and social acquaintances, but not to enhance the relationship with one's spouse. This study implies that practical efforts to enhance the smartphone use and the level of informatization among older adults are needed to improve the inter-personal relationships and quality of life in old age.

  • This study examined life in old age and images of the aged perceived by middle-aged and old-aged generations through indepth interviews with 30 persons aged 40s through 80s residing in three areas (city or county) in capital region in Korea to use it as basic information in planning social welfare policy and reorganizing social services in response to population aging in capital region in Korea. In terms of economic life of the middle-aged and olde-aged generations perceived older people's opportunities for work were rarely given to the aged due to ageism and negative stereotypes of aging and the aged, and the aged tended to regard themselves less able or unable to work. In terms of social life of the aged both middle-aged and old-aged generations perceived that the frequency of social participation was low, and the daily life of the aged was found mostly aimless, unorganized and unplanned. In terms of psycho-social life of the aged both generations still felt that they were not alienated from the family, neighbors, and the society. In terms of social welfare services both generations thought the aged needed basic services such as income maintenance, health care, housing services, and particularly they felt lack of social services. The old-aged generation was willing to travel to the distance taking more than one hour to receive social services that they would need. Both the middle-aged and the old-aged agreed upon the necessity of preparation for old age and the benefits of earlier preparation, however, they said that they could not prepare for their old age due to lack of social programs to help preparation for old age and due to spending for rearing and education of their children. In terms of perceived life in old age both middle-aged and old-aged generations tended to be slightly positive, but the degree of positiveness differed between respondents from urban area and those from rural area regardless of generations. Images of the aged were perceived to be overwhelmingly negative while positive images were very few in number regardless of generations. This finding may suggests that negative stereotypes on aging and the aged are also prevalent in Korean society like in Western societies. Based on findings of this study some implications for social policies in response to population aging in capital region were suggested.

  • This study examined the relationship between leisure needs and perception of psycho-social aging among 1307 older adults aged over 60 years utilizing social services of a social welfare center for senior citizens in Seoul, Korea. A convenience sample of this study was collected for three weeks in December 2012 among older adults via paper survey. Hierarchical multiple regression was utilized to analyze collected data. The present study demonstrated that age, years of education, perception of health status, and perception of economic status were significantly associated with perception of successful aging. However, years of education and perception of economic status were no longer significantly associated with perception of psycho-social aging, when leisure needs was included. Age, perception of health status, and hobbies/entertainment activities and employment/plan of later years activities among types of leisure needs were significantly associated with perception of psycho-social aging. This finding demonstrates that leisure needs influence perception of psycho-social aging. Implications and suggestions to improve perception of psycho-social aging among older adults are discussed.

  • This study is to find ways to build economic participation for the elderly through job projects to help the elderly live a pleasant life. The results of this study are as follows. First, the relevant laws must be overhauled. To this end, jobs targeting the elderly should be selected first, and legal procedures should be prepared in the government. Second, they should extend the retirement age and support senior employment businesses. The extension of the retirement age believes that a resumption of the wage structure is inevitable in order to increase employment for senior citizens. It is also desirable to implement policies such as giving tax benefits to companies that employ older people more than a certain percentage of them. Third, there should be self-help efforts by the elderly. Three factors are essential to keep the work of old age pleasant and faithful. In other words, it is important to always learn new knowledge and hone one's ability in order to do a rewarding job of living without health and some economic stability. In conclusion, measures to establish economic participation for the elderly through the work-seeker project will require, among other things, a sufficient extension of the retirement age to allow the elderly to engage in their jobs, while overhauling the system, including legal maintenance.

Research sample came from 2008 KLOSA data, recruiting 1,367 workers who are residing in cities or in metropolitan area (women: 34.8%). I have analyzed one item question asking "In what age do you want to fully retire?", The results showed that, about two third of respondents declared they do not want to retire unless they have health problems, or would expect to retire no earlier than age 70. However, a third of respondents expected normal retirement coming between 60~64. Second, the determinants of timing for retirement were differ by PRT. Social determinants, such as gender, short work hours, being employed, and higher status in family income were associated with early PRT. While, good health status, positive view on the future economics were highly associated with late PRT. The results reveal that the timing of retirement is getting more diverse and obscure in the individual level.

  • This study regards the need for jobs to overcome the poverty of the elderly in an aged society, and as well as researches ways to participate in active economic activities in old age. The results of the study are as follows. First, the legal system needs to be improved. In addition to institutional support for the expansion of jobs for the elderly, improvement of awareness of the elderly and reinforcement of infrastructure such as a delivery system are required, and a legal basis for this is needed. To this end, occupations targeting the elderly must be selected first, and legal procedures must be prepared by the government. Second, there must be social consideration and support for the elderly. Extension of the retirement age plays an important role in enhancing employment for the elderly. Along with the improvement of the legal system, social consideration is required. Therefore, since the elderly policy without social consensus is bound to fail, various support methods that can lead to social support must be devised. Third, the elderly must have a sense of poverty and willingness to rehabilitate themselves. Elderly people should not only ask for their children and social support. The elderly must be able to find a way to become the economic agent themselves. To do this, a basic awareness of the elderly poverty consciousness is needed, and a change of awareness to escape the poverty of the elderly is necessary. Therefore, the elderly need to be self-reliant, and they must choose jobs according to their own abilities. In conclusion, the elderly job program is a part of income increase that solves the poverty of the elderly in the aged society, and the elderly are required to actively participate in economic activities.

  • This study evaluated the dietary habits and dietary quality of the Korean elderly according to muscle strength status. This study was conducted on the elderly aged over 65 years who participated in the 2014-2018 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Subjects were classified into the normal muscle strength group(n=2,000) and the low muscle strength group(n=1,273) according to the handgrip strength. There was a significant difference in general characteristics, diet habits, and health behavior according to the muscle strength status. The normal muscle strength group had a higher total score of KHEI and a subtotal score of 「adequacy」 items. But there was not significant difference in the 「moderation」 items. For the 「balance of energy intake」 items, the normal muscle strength group had a higher subtotal score than the low muscle strength group only in among women. The prevalence of low muscle strength decreased in the highest quartile of the adjusted KHEI total score(p for trend=0.08). As a result of this study, it was found that KHEI was significantly associated with muscle strength. This study result can be used to provide dietary guidelines for the improvement of muscle strength in the elderly based on each item of KHEI and sex.
