A Study on Design Features of 'Nendo' Furniture ('넨도' 가구의 디자인 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Nendo, which was established in Tokyo in 2002, is a design company established by Oki Sato, which is gaining reputation as a new design group representing Japan through numerous design tasks encompassing diverse design sectors, such as architecture, interior, furniture, graphic, and products. This study was conducted to investigate the formative features of Nendo furniture by reviewing 133 pieces of Nendo furniture designed for the last ten years and identify the general characteristics of Nendo furniture by reviewing the time of launch, product launch type, and furniture type. As a result, the design features of Nendo furniture are as follows: First, the shapes of basic materials including boards, lumber, and bars are maintained intact and Nendo furniture has simple and moderate design without complicated or decorative elements. Second, Nendo furniture has simply embodied a design characterized by simple transformation, minimization of furniture elements, and rearrangement. Third, Nendo presents new and simple furniture differentiated from other pieces of furniture using optical illusions. Such expressions of optical illusions which are hardly found in preexisting furniture are a major feature of Nendo furniture. Fourth, a majority of chairs of Nendo cause optical illusions with the minimized size. In addition, their top boards made of transparent glass and mirror cause optical illusions with the properties of materials. In short, design of Nendo furniture is characterized by formative expressions, expressions of optical illusions, and differentiated use of materials. Fifth, Nendo keeps launching new furniture items in various exhibitions. As a result, Nendo makes furniture with its own unique characteristics based on its diverse studies and experiments which are applied to furniture design in a realistic way. In summary, design of Nendo furniture is characterized by simply embodied design based on small differences in daily life, minimalism with simple and moderate shapes, and its own witty uniqueness based on formative expressions, expressions of optical illusions, and use of materials differentiated from other furniture brands.

Preparation of Water-Resistant Humidity Sensor Using Photocurable Reactive Oligomers Containing Ionene Unit and Their Properties (이온넨 단위를 가지는 광경화성 반응성 올리고머를 이용한 내수성 습도센서의 제조 및 감습 특성)

  • New polyelectrolytes derived from ionene-containing photocurable reactive oligomer (PIDM) were prepared for water-resistant humidity-sensitive membranes. The mixture of PIDM, hexamethylene dimethacrylate (HDM), pentaerythritol triacrylate dimer (SP1013), and photoinitiator was simultaneously coated on the sensor electrode with photoinitiated radical polymerization. The pretreatment of the substrates with vinyl-type silane-coupling reagent was performed for improving the water durability and stability of the sensors at high temperature and humidity. When the resistance dependences on the relative humidity of the crosslinked PIDMs were measured, it was found that the resistance varied three orders of magnitude between 20 and 90%RH, which was required for the humidity sensor operating at ambient humidity. Their hysteresis, temperature dependence, response time, water durability, and high temperature/humidity stabilities were measured and evaluated as a humidity-sensing membrane.

Spatial Features and Issues in the Process of Establishing and Expanding the Milwaukee Art Museum (밀워키미술관 신·증축에서 나타나는 공간적 특성과 쟁점)

  • This research explores a historical trajectory of the Milwaukee Art Museum from its establishment to the third expansion over the last six decades. After established in 1957 by the architect, Eero Saarinen, this museum underwent three expansions led by three different architects including, David Kahler, Santiago Calatrava, and James Shields. Reasons for expanding the museum were varied. A lack of exhibition space, an absence of visual identity, and path interruption problem within urban contexts were the main factors of a series of expansion. Furthermore, this research points out that there are three issues in the process of the expansion. The first is connection issues between the downtown and the lakefront in which the museum has blocked the public flow. The second, there were controversies on the allocation of the expanded space among the main body of the decision including architects, curators, and stakeholders. The last one is relationships among architects. This is related to each architect's attitude toward the museum. Drawing on historical documents and interviews with the regional architects, I argue that the identity and values of the museum have changed over time through the expansions rather than having the invariable.

Estrus Synchronization and Artificial Insemination in Dairy Goats (유산양에서 발정동기화 유도와 인공수정 효율)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the response of CIDR-S on estrus synchronization of dairy goats and the effect of artificial insemination on conception rate. Estrus synchronization of sexually matured Saanen goats was induced with insertion of CIDR-S into vagina for 15 days and injection of 500 IU PMSG before removal of CIDR-S. Artificial insemination was conducted using liquid or frozen semen by intra-cervical insemination with synchronized does. Estrus synchronization was 90% using CIDR-S insertion for 15 days. Conception rate of inseminated does was 20% - 25%, while that of natural mated does was 100%. These results suggested that synchronization of dairy goats can be successfully induced and artificial insemination method has to be improved for the practical use in dairy goats.
