The liquid crystalline properties of a series of main chain liquid crystalline polymers and four series compounds consisting of aromatic type Schiff base mesogenic units and polymethylene flexible spacers were studied. The thermal and liquid crystalline properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and on the hot stage of a polarizing microscope. The nature of the liquid crystalline phase of the polymers and compounds depended greatly on the length of the central polymethylene spacer and on the terminal alkoxy groups. Polymers I and Series III exhibited an even-odd effect in melting and isotropization temperatures but Series II and Series IV exhibited an even-odd effect in isotropization temperatures. They formed nematic and smectic mesophases in melts as judged by their optical textures observed through a polarizing microscope.
A source code is developed on the basis of Berreman's 4$\times$4 matrix formalism for the analysis of polarization transmission characteristics of twisted nematic liquid crystal display. By using the program, the polarization transmission characteristics of liquid crystal cells and polarizers are analyzed. For a normally white twisted nematic liquid crystal cell, we obtained a family of iso-contrast contours which helps to understand the viewing angle characteristics of the liquid crystal display device by using the cell. The program also help us to understand the variation of the degree of polarization as well as the deviation of the state of polarization of the light transmitted through the polarizer commonly used in the LCD according to the change in incidence angle. This result suggests the contrast of the images appearing on the LCD can be limited by the characteristics of the polarizer in addition to the liquid crystal cell.

Three kinds of hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) derivatives, [6-{4-(4-cyanophenylazo)phenoxy}]hexyloxypropyl celluloses (CAHPCs) with degree of etherification (DET) ranging from 0.4 to 3, fully substituted acrylic acid esters of HPC (HPCA) and CAHPCs (CAHPCAs) were synthesized. The crosslinked HPCA (HPCAG) and CAHPCAs (CAHPCAGs) were also prepared by exposing thermotropic mesophases of HPCA and CAHPCAs to UV light. Both CAHPCs and CAHPCAs with DET ${\leq}$ 1.2, as well as HPC and HPCA, formed enantiotropic cholesteric phases whose optical pitches(${\lambda}_m$'s) increase with temperature, wheras both CAHPCs and CAHPCAs with DET ${\geq}$ 1.4 showed monotropic nematic phases. CAHPCAGs with DET ${\leq}$ 1.2, as well as CAHPCAs with DET ${\leq}$ 1.2, exhibited reflection colors in a wide temperature range. On the other hand, CAHPCAGs with DET ${\geq}$ 1.4, as well as CAHPCAs with DET ${\geq}$ 1.4, showed Schileren textures typical of nematic phase, indicating that the liquid crystalline structure is virtually locked upon photocrosslinking. The isotropization temperatures($T_i$'s) of both CAHPCAs and CAHPCAGs decreased with increasing DET. The $T_i$ of CAHPCAG, however, was higher than that of CAHPCA at the same DET. Moreover, the temperature dependence of ${\lambda}_m$ of CAHPCAGs was much weaker than that of CAHPCAs.
The thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior of a homologous series of poly[1-{4-(4' nitrophenylazo) phenoxycarbonylalkanoyloxy}ethylene]s (NAPEn, n = $2{\sim}8$,10, the number of methylene units in the spacer) have been investigated. All of the homologues formed monotropic nematic phases. The glass transition temperatures decreased with n. This is attributed to a plasticization of the backbone by the side chains. The isotropic-nematic phase transition temperatures decreased with increasing n up to 7 and showed the odd-even effect. However it became almost constant when n is more than 7. This behavior was rationalized in terms of the change in the average shape of the side chain on varing the parity of the spacer. This rationalization also accounts for the observed variation of the entropic gain for the clearing transition. The mesophase properties of NAPEn were entirely different from those reported for the polymers in which the azobenzene groups are attached to polyacrylate, polymathacrylate, and polystyrene backbones through polymethylene spacers. The results indicate that the mode of chemical linkage of the side group with the main chain plays an important role in the formation, stabilization, and type of mesophase.
A division-of-amplitude type photopolarimeter has been constructed for the analysis of the dynamic optical characteristics of liquid crystal panels, one of the essential components of liquid crystal displays. In this instrument an incoming light ray, whose state of polarization is to be determined, is divided into three rays of nearly same intensities and of identical polarization state by using NPBS'(non-polarizing beam splitters). Each of the three rays is further divided into two components of orthogonal polarization states by using a PBS(polarizing cube beamsplitter) or by using a combination of a quater wave plate followed by a PBS. The intensity of each ray is measured by using a photodiode to produce a set of six photo-signals, which in turn are converted into four Stokes parameters describing the state of polarization of the incoming ray. Performance test of the insrument shows that its time resolution is 80 $mutextrm{s}$, accuracy $\pm$0.3 degrees when the state of polarization of the incoming ray is representated on the Poincare sphere.

A series of liquid crystalline polyesters containing the 4-chloro benzoate group on the hydroquinone unit of rigid group were synthesized through solution polymerization of 2,5-di(4-chlorobenzoate)hydroquinones and 4,4'-dicarboxy-${\alpha},{\omega}$-diphenoxy alkane. The structure and properties for synthesized polymers were investigated by $^1H$-NMR, FT-IR, DSC, TGA, and POM. As result of investigations, The presence of the methylene group and bulky lateral groups in polymer chain have a great influence on the properties of polymers such as solubilities and thermal transitions. The optical textures of polymers revealed a weak birefringence in the melt and indicated that they form nematic mesophase. All polymers have very narrow mesophase temperature ranges.
We Have fabricated a holographic polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (HPDLC) thin film, which is composed of multifunctional acrylate monomer blended with the nematic liquid crystal mixture, and then investigated the real-time diffraction efficiencies for various amounts of liquid crystals and applied AC electric fields. It is experimentally shown that the holographic gratings recorded in the HPDLC film can be reversibly erased and reconstructed by switching on and off an appropriate applied AC electric field. By use of these electro-optic properties we have developed bifocal holographic lenses having two different focal lengths of 30cm and 40 cm.
Side-chain liquid crystalline polymers with various compositions of azobenzene and cholesteryl functional groups as the mesogenic moiety were synthesized by direct polycondensation, and their properties were investigated. The inherent viscosity values of synthesized polymers were between 0.32 and 0.38 dL/g in 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane. All polymers except the SP-A10C0 polymer containing only the azobenzene group were amorphous or exhibited very low crystallinity due to the presence of bulky mesogenic side chains. All synthesized polymers exhibited enantiotropic liquid crystallinity; the SP-A10C0 polymer having only the azobenzene group exhibited a nematic phase, and all other polymers showed a cholesteric phase. In particular, it was found that when the content of cholesteryl groups in the side chain of the polymer increases, the liquid crystallinity decreases due to the bulkiness of cholesteryl groups.
The aqueous solution of Sunset Yellow-FCF (SY-FCF) began to show schlieren texture at room temperature when its concentration reaches 25 wt%. A further increase of the concentration of SY-FCF to 28 wt% resulted in a perfect nematic liquid crystal phase. However, more than 30 wt% of SY-FCF in aqueous solution was required to make an optically anisotropic film simply by shear coating. In our study, concentration of SY-FCF solution, coating speed, drying temperature, and relative humidity were considered as coating parameters affecting the preparation of optically anisotropic thin films. From analysis of variance analysis (ANOVA), the solution concentration was revealed as a main factor affecting the film thickness. The drying temperature and solution concentration were main factors affecting the transmittance of parallel direction ($T_o$). Especially, SY-FCF aqueous solution with high concentration induced a better alignment of LC columns and produced highly oriented anisotropic films. In this study, optically anisotropic films prepared by 33 wt% of SY-FCF in aqueous solution showed 89.7~98.7% of degree of polarization.

A new homologous series with the general formula in which n is the longitudinal alkyloxy group, n=1-10, was synthesized. The thermotropic and liquid crystalline properties were studied by differential scanning calorimetry and on the hot-stage of a polarizing microscope. All of the new compounds were monotropic and texture observations proved that all investigated homologues with n=1-10 exhibited nematic phases. Also, the compounds showed pronounced alternation effects in the homologous series with constant lateral bridging group, oxydecamethyleneoxy, but increasing longitudinal chains, n.
