  • To investigate the appearance of cold water by upwelling effect near Ulsan-Gampo of the southeastern coast in Korea on June, 1999, we carried out a numerical experiment by 3-dimensional diagnostic numerical model. Appearance of cold water by the result of numerical experiment was due to upwelling by wind effect at 50-100m depth near Ulsan-Gampo coast. This result was mused by using a model to 2 times of existing wind magnitude near Busan, Ulsan and Gampo that is 5.0m/sec wind. Therefore, to illustrate the phenomenon of extraordinary marine environment like upwelling event and so forth, appropriate wind data at sea should be used instead of those on land.

  • The cold water mass appeared in offshore of the east coast of Korea in summer season was studied in aspect of chemical oceanography. Such a typical relationship between phosphate and dissolved oxygen as shown in the upwelling regions could not be found in the east coast except around the Kampo coast, southern part of the east coast. It is possible to isolate the North Korean Cold Water from tile proper water of tile Japan Sea by using $\sigma_t-O_2$ diagram. The origin of the cold water mass in offshore of the east coast of Korea in summer is not mainly due to the development of upwelling of the proper water of the Japan Sea but thesouthwardflolvingoftheNorthKoreanCold Water.

  • Daily time series of longshore wind at 8 stations, sea surface temperature (SST) at 11 stations in the eastern coast of the Korean peninsula during $1983\~1997$ and the NOAA/AVHRR satellite data during $1990\~1998$ were used in order to study the temporal and spatial variations of the upwelling cold water which occurred in the summer season. The cold water occurred frequently in the eastern coastal waters of Korea such as Soimal, Kijang, Ulgi, Kampo, Pohang, Youngduk, Chukbyun, Chumunjin and Sokcho, During the upwelling cold water phenomenon, SST came down more than $-5^{\circ}C$ in a day. The maximum of the averaged RMS amplitude of daily SST was $5.8^{\circ}C$ along the eastern coast of Korea on Julian day 212 from $1983\~1997$. The cross correlation coefficients were higher than 0.5 between Sokcho and Chumunjin in the northern part of the East Sea, and along Soimal, Kijang, Ulgi, Kampo and Pohang in the southern part of the East Sea. In late July, 1995 the cold water occurred at Ulgi coastal area and extended to Ullung island which is located 250 km off the Ulgi coast. Even though the distance between Soimal and the Ulgi coast area is more than 120 km, the cross correlation coefficient related to the anomalies of SST due to upwelling cold water was the highest (0.7) in the southeastern coastal area of the Korean peninsula. This connection may be due to the cyclonic circulation of the Tsushima Current in this area and the topography of the ocean rather than the local south wind which induced the coastal upwelling.

  • Appearance of cold water in the coastal area off Ulsan-Campo, Southeastern coast of Korea, during summer has been well observed. To see the effect of this cold water on zooplankton distribution, we have collected zooplankton at 4 to 8 sites in the near coast as well as off coast for three times about two weeks of interval from July to August, 2001. Appearance of cold water was confirmed and total of about 195 zooplankton taxa were identified. Both the numbers of taxa appeared and zooplankton abundances did not show significant difference among the three sampling periods. On the other hand, the numbers of taxa appeared were generally greater in off coastal area while zooplankton abundances were greater in the near coastal area. These two variables showed different relationship with seawater temperatures. That is, the numbers of taxa appeared showed positive correlation with seawater temperatures (p<0.05) but abundances showed no significant relationship (p>0.05) with seawater temperatures of which variations were comparable with seasonal variations. It was postulated that the upwelling induced appearance of cold water enriched the nutrients, enhanced phytoplankton production and then provided better food conditions for smaller zooplankton in the near coastal part of this study area. In this context it was postulated that zooplankton distribution in the upwelling area might be controlled by food condition rather than seawater temperatures in spite of the large temperature variations caused by the appearance of cold water.

  • The variation and structure of the cold water mass around Ganjeol Point during the summer of 2011 were studied using data from CTD observations and temperature monitoring buoys deployed at 20 stations off the southeast coast of Korea. There was a $-12^{\circ}C$ surface temperature difference between the cold water mass and normal water during the monitoring period. Variations in the isothermal lines for surface temperature along the coast showed that the seabed topography at Ganjeol Point played an important part in the distribution of water temperature. Cold water appeared when the wind components running parallel to the coast had positive values. The upwelling -response for temperature fluctuations was very sensitive to changes in wind direction. Vertical turbulent mixing due to the seabed topography at Ganjeol Point can reinforce the upwelling of cold bottom water. From wavelet analysis, coherent periods found to be 2-8 days during frequent upwelling events and phase differences for a decrease in water temperature with a SSW wind were 12-36 hours.

  • A long-term trend analysis of cold water masses along eastern coast of South Korea was performed during summer, based on wind speed, wind direction, and sea surface temperature (SST) data. Wind data collected over a 22-year period (1997-2011) were compared with another set of data collected over the successive 7-year (2012-2018), highlighting a general decrease in the frequency and speed of south winds. However, both the frequency and speed of these winds have been higher in June between 2012-2018, rather than between 1997-2011. The cold water season between July and August was faster during the 7-year period; moreover, the SSTs registered around Gangneung (EN) rose by $0.5^{\circ}C- 1.8^{\circ}C$, while those around Yeongdeok (EC) and Gijang (ES) increased by only $0.1^{\circ}C-0.3^{\circ}C$. The number of cold water days during the 7-year period, compared to those recorded during previous years (1990-2011, satellite SST data by NOAA/AVHRR), decreased in the proximity of Yeongdeok and Gijang, but increased in the proximity of Kangneung. Additionally, the number of cold water days around Kangneung, Yeongdeok, and Gijang increased in June highlighting a geographical and temporal change in the occurrence of cold waters. These observation can be explained by variations in the pressure distribution that should have weakened the East Asian monsoon, affecting the direction and speed of winds that regulate the flow of cold waters.

  • By analyzing the sea surface temperature (SST), phytoplankton and NOAA/AVHRR satellite data of Gijang, located at the eastern coast of the korean peninsula during the period of 2001 to 2003, we have analyzed the daily variation in the upwelling cold water, phytoplankton, and chlorophyll a. The SST of Gijang coast appealed rapid change due to the temporal and spatial variation of the upwelling cold water. This in turn led to an increase in the number of phytoplanktons and other varieties of organisms inhabiting in the Gijang coastal region.

  • To study the composition of the developmental stages of Maurolicus japonicus eggs distributed in the western Korea Strait, we investigated the water temperature, salinity, eggs and larvae in December 2002. The Korea Strait Bottom Cold Water (KSBCW) lower than $10^{\circ}C$ was found in off the Ulsan and Busan where M. japonicus eggs were the most abundant. The composition of the developmental stages of M. japonicus eggs at each station were composed of 37.7~89.5% in the first stage, 8.5~37.8% in the middle stage and 0.0~24.7% in the last stage respectively. In the southern area where the KSBCW appeared, the first stage eggs occupied 73.3~89.5%. The high percentage of the first stage eggs indicated that the eggs should be transported by the cold water lower than $10^{\circ}C$ from the Ulleung Basin in the East Sea. In the northern area where the KSBCW was not found, the first, middle and last stage eggs were composed of 37.5%, 37.8% and 24.7% respectively. The ratios of middle and last stage eggs were much higher than those in the southern area with the KSBCW, which implies that the eggs are recruited into the northern area from the southern area with the KSBCW by the Tsushima Warm Current. The pre-larvae found only in the middle and northern part of the study area would be hatched during the transport of eggs from the southern area with the KSBCW by the Tsushima Warm Current.
