The objective of this paper is to investigate the performance characteristics of a $CO_2$ cooling and water heating system using a twin-rotary compressor with the compression volume ratio of 0.6. The cooling performances of the $CO_2$ heat pump were measured and analyzed with the variations of charge amount, EEV opening, and compressor frequency. In addition, the performance of the combined system including cooling and water heating was also measured and analyzed by varying inlet temperature of the EEV. As a result, the optimal normalized charge and cooling COP in the cooling mode were 0.307 and 2.06, respectively. The application of the water heating into the $CO_2$ heat pump improved the cooling performance over 78% and decreased the EEV inlet temperature by $8^{\circ}C$, which can increase system reliability.

To analyze the cooling performance of fin-tube evaporator in the refrigerator truck using R744 according to frost growth, the analytical model of evaporator was developed under frost and non-frost conditions. The performance of fin-tube evaporator was investigated with frost thickness and indoor temperature. Besides, the performance of evaporator under frost condition was compared to that under non-frost condition. As a result, area of air passage and system performance were decreased as the frost thickness increased. The cooling capacity was reduced by 10%, 20%, 30% when the frost thickness was 0.7 mm, 1.1 mm, and 1.6 mm respectively. At these conditions, the block ratio was 31%, 48%, and 71%. In addition, the outlet quality of refrigerant was not over 1 when the frost thickness was 1.6 mm in spite of high indoor air temperature.

The ice slurry maker which can produce the ice slurry well for the ice particle in-flowing condition was revised. We removed the stagnant region at the top of the ice slurry maker, and IPF 40% could be realized. The IPF controller with 6 mm diameter holes at the bottom was designed. But the IPF controller with only 6 mm diameter holes could not control IPF in a pipe. This is because the ice particles at ice slurry flow exist homogeneously not only at the upper part but also at the bottom part. We changed the hole size of IPF controller surface using fine meshes and then, IPF in a pipe was increased by 70% when the hole size was $80{\mu}m$ and less.

For a $CO_2$ one-stage twin rotary compressor, a T-shaped suction port was used to effectively supply the suction gas stream into two individual suction chambers of the twin cylinders. Suction gas pulsations were observed in the pressure sensor signals and these were simulated by using the acoustic modeling of Helmholz resonators in parallel. The module of acoustic modeling was combined to a computer simulation program for the compressor performance. Validation of the simulation program has been carried out for a bench model compressor in a compressor calorimeter. Cooling capacity and the compressor input power were reasonably well compared between the simulation and the calorimeter test. Particularly, good agreement on P-V diagram between the simulation and the test was obtained.
A microchannel condenser as a part of a R410A residential air-conditioning system was examined experimentally and numerically in this study. The system was operated in separate environmental chambers and its performance was measured in ARI A, B, and C conditions. A numerical model for the microchannel condenser was developed and its results were compared with the experimental results. The model simulated the condenser with the assumption of the uniform air and refrigerant distribution, and with the consideration of the non-uniform air distribution at the face of the condenser and refrigerant distribution in the headers. In order to consider the non-uniform air distribution, air velocity contours were generated from the measured local air velocities at the face of the condenser. The simulation results showed that the effect of the air and refrigerant distribution was not a significant parameter in predicting the capacity of the microchannel condenser which was experimentally examined in this study. The comparison of the calculated and experimental results showed that the condenser capacity could be predicted well for every test condition. However, the prediction of refrigerant pressure drop deviated significantly from the measured values.

In the present study, the cooling performances of the air-conditioner applied the fin-tube and aluminum PF heat exchangers have been experimentally investigated by using the calorimeter. The experiment is carried out in the conditions of the standard temperature and the low temperature. Fin type of PF heat exchanger is a triangler and squarer form. PF heat exchanger has smaller refrigerant weight and larger capacity and COP han the fin-tube heat exchanger. The performance of PF-2 heat exchanger with the squarer in is more excellent than that of PF-1 heat exchanger with the triangler fin. The high pressure of PF heat exchanger decreases about 7%, compared to the fin-tube heat exchanger. Also, CSPF of the fin-tube and PF heat exchanger is evaluated.

Natural ventilation through openings such as windows in school buildings is an efficient resource for natural cooling during the intermediate season of the year. Because the natural ventilation uses the wind outside the building, the amount of ventilation will depend not only on the wind speed and wind direction but also on the window layout and open window ratio. Therefore, in this study, the natural ventilation plans of school classroom windows are divided into 4 types and 8 cases as shown in Table 1. The characteristics of cooling effect by natural ventilation are simulated by applying Energyplus's Airflow Network Model and the comfort of the occupants is evaluated by the number of hours included in the 80% acceptability range of the ASHRAE Standard 55-2010 adaptive comfort model for the weekdays (Monday-Friday) and the class hours (08: 00-19: 00). Based on the analysis results of the above, this study presents basic data related to classroom cooling plan using intermediate season natural ventilation.

Identification of a steady state is the first step in developing a fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) system of a heat pump. In a complete FDD system, the steady-state detector will be included as a module in a self-learning algorithm, which enables the working system's reference model to "tune" itself to its particular installation. In this study, a steady-state detector of a residential air conditioner based on moving windows was designed. Seven representative measurements were selected as key features for steady-state detection. The optimized moving-window size and the feature thresholds were decided on the basis of a startup-transient test and no-fault steady-state test. Performance of the steady-state detector was verified during an indoor load-change test. In this study, a general methodology for designing a moving-window steady-state detector for applications involving vapor compression has been established.

Recently, noise reduction in room air conditioners has been one of the important issues as well as cooling efficiency. The rotary compressor is the dominant noise source in an air conditioner. A number of studies have been conducted on reducing compressor noise through improving muffler and resonator design. However the noise from the accumulator, a noise delivering path between compressor and air conditioner, is not fully taken into consideration. The accumulator contains a large inner cavity, and usually generates additional resonance noise during operation. This paper aims to conduct an optimal design for reducing accumulator noise by maximizing the transmission loss within the target frequency range that represents high-order nonlinearity. Design of experiments and radial basis function neural network are used in the context of approximate meta-models, and genetic algorithm is used as an optimization tool.
The purpose of this study is to maintain high efficiency and reasonable use of cool thermal storage systems operated in the domestic building sector. As the result of efficiency test from the five types of operated cool storage systems on the condition that COP ranges are 2.6 to 3.4 during the day time and 2.1 to 3.0 during the night time and it decreased by more than 30% of rated COP given 3.8 to 3.0. The Analysis of cool storage rate shows that only 3 (21.4%) systems out of 15 buildings hold to over 40% capacity for its total capacity. To prevent the decrease in operating efficiency, it should correct the malfunction of 3-way valve and expansion valve and the mistake of control values for schedule program and increase cooling tower capacity. In order to improve piping line, it needs bypass brine line off refrigerator, separation of chilled water line with Ice Slurry system at day and night time and speed control of chilled and warm water pumps. This study does require the more studies on improving difficulty of increasing cooling load with Ice on Coil system, waterproofing with Ice Ball system, COP drop during the night time with Ice Lens, low operating temperature during the day time with Ice Slurry and increasing of Power loss due to hot gas de-icing with Ice Harvest in the future.
