  • Steel structures are threatened to reduce load-carrying capacity as the cross section is decreased by corrosion. However, there has been no method in definitely evaluating residual load-carrying capacity and the effect of corrosion to the load-carrying capacity of steel. This study evaluated tensile residual load-carrying capacity of corroded steel plates by using tensile tests of specimens, which were selected from the web of temporary structure's main beam. After the surface shapes were measured and tensile tests were examined, the rust of 21 corroded specimens was, first of all, removed using a chemical method. From the tensile test result, which of reference specimens that was picked off at the flange of the same main 13-mm-thick beam and corroded specimens were based, surface geometry and correlation with the reduction of corroded thickness and strain, yield strength or tensile strength was established as constant numbers. Effective thickness of corroded steel with irregular cross sections could be calculated using average residual thickness and standard deviation. The irregular cross sections could be the evaluated tensile strength that is equalized to non-corroded uniform steel's regardless of corrosion. Also, reasonable measuring intervals of residual thickness could be proposed by using this result to apply for executive work.

  • Bridges are a key infrastructure that underpins economic and social activities. In Korea, bridges began to be built with economic development in the 1970s and were built intensively in the 1980s and 1990s. In recent years, as the number of bridges with a service life of more than 30 years is increasing, continuous maintenance is required to ensure the safety of the bridges. In particular, in order to cope with the aging of bridges, research on technology development such as maintenance using ICT technology, preventive maintenance, life cycle cost reduction, and long life bridge is being actively promoted. This paper presents the results of correlation analysis based on the safety evaluation data of bridges as part of the research on the development of a model for estimating load-carrying capacity of bridges. As a analysis result, indicators highly correlated with the load-carrying capacity of the bridge was derived.

  • In a previous study, the impact factor response spectrum and corresponding method for evaluating the load carrying capacity of bridges was suggested to improve the existing evaluation method. To verify the applicability of the suggested method, which is based on the frequency of bridges, the dynamic characteristic test for an actual single span simply-supported bridge was conducted. Through a field test under ambient traffic conditions, the dynamic response of the bridge was obtained using wireless accelometers and its fundamental frequency was identified. The peak impact factor was determined from the identified frequency and the impact factor response spectrum. The load carrying performance variation of the bridge was estimated considering the performance reduction factor, which was calculated using the current and previous natural frequency and impact factor. From the result, the load carrying capacity of the bridge was decreased, but the capacity was still enough because its value is greater than the design live load. Through the overall procedures and technical details presented in this paper, the suggested evaluation method can be applied to actual bridges with the acceleration data measured under ambient traffic conditions and the impact factor response spectrum.

  • The weight of soundproof panels is an important consideration in the design of both panels and supporting structures. The soundproof panels in noise barriers have to carry their net weight in wet condition respectively the reduced weight and also the weight of the above installed panels in wet condition without showing any failing. In this study, a compression test and a flexural test were performed to determine the maximum vertical load which a wood plastic composites (WPC) panel can bear. In addition, the maximum loading number and height of WPC panels in a noise barrier were calculated for full, simple, and continuous support conditions.

  • Recently, necessities of steel form for reinforced concrete beam and girder have been emphasized in building structures for the reduction of the construction period and the labor cost. SY Beam was developed for the these purposes and is roll-formed using thin steel plate. On this research, we tried to evaluate and verify the performance and behavior of SY Beam under construction loading stage as like pouring in situ concrete. For the standard shape of SY beam, structural modelling with various steel thicknesses has carried out using MIDAS GEN program. From results of modelling, the width and height of SY Beam were determined 600mm and 400mm respectively. For 3 SY Beams, the loading experiment was performed to measure vertical and horizontal displacement under stacking sand, concrete block, and bundle of rebar. As a result, the vertical deflection showed a tendency to decrease as the thickness increased. In the horizontal displacement, the trend according to the thickness was not clearly observed. From the evaluation on the loading experiment, it is considered that the SY Beam can secure both workability and structural safety. In particular, the SY Beam(1.2mm) hardly generates horizontal displacement, so it has excellent load-bearing capacity. So, we judged that the SY Beam with 1.2mm steel plate has excellent performance and consider to be immediately commercially available.

  • This paper deals with an enhanced structural capacity of reinforced concrete bridge deck strengthened with carbon fiber rod (CFR) which is subjected to monotonic and cyclic loads. Strengthening variables considered in this test were evenly and unevenly strengthening type. To evaluate strengthening capacity for these two strengthening types, load-carrying capacity and crack and failure pattern from the failure test were analyzed and fatigue response were examined. According to the test results, all the strengthened specimens showed punching shear failure as a result of premature failure of bonding interface between mortar and concrete. In the case of strengthening capacity, it was observed that the strengthened specimens was more effective in strength, stiffness and fatigue endurance limit than the unstrengthened specimen. In addition, the unevenly strengthening method (CR-UE) was more effective than the evenly strengthening method (CR-E).

  • In this study, steel fiber-reinforced concrete beams with ordinary steel reinforcements, that are below minimum steel reinforcement amount specified in domestic concrete structure design code, were tested in flexure until failure. Steel reinforcement ratio considered were 44%, 66%, 78% and 100% of the minimum steel reinforcement. Considered steel fiber volume fractions were 0.25%, 0.50%, 0.75% and 1.00%. In results, it is confirmed that steel fibers greatly improve crack performance. Also, the steel fibers contributed to increment in yield load not in ultimate load. But the increment was not greater than the reduction by steel reinforcement reduction. The use of steel fibers in RC beams lightly reinforced below the minimum reinforcement ratio specified design code reduced ductility greatly. Consequently, steel reinforcement ratio in steel fiber-reinforced beams lightly reinforced below the minimum steel reinforcement should be increased in order to enhance proper ductility.

  • When UHSFRC is applied to structures, it can be expected that it shows excellent performance in a point of constructability and load capacity. However, its rich mix can cause some problems concerning the long-term behavior such as shrinkage and creep. Therefore it is inevitably needed to investigate its long-term behavior in order to apply it to structures safely. This study is dealing with the drying shrinkage of UHSFRC. UHSFRC shows relatively fast drying shrinkage in the early exposed ages and slow moisture diffusion caused by compact microstructure of the material. It was found that The KCI model to predict the drying shrinkage did not properly represent these properties of UHSFRC. therefore a modified drying shrinkage model applicable to UHSFRC, which has different shrinkage properties from that of normal concrete, was proposed

  • PSC-I girder is widely used in designing bridge. Currently partial advanced country have constructed bridge with high strength concrete, while in-country rather less concrete strength(40MPa) has been used to build bridge girder. So, this paper presents characteristics and behavior of member casted by high strength concrete to apply practically. For this aim, 4 girders were fabricated to investigate performance and structural behavior. Prior to test, structural analysis was performed with common program. Steel gages and concrete gage were filled up to measure longitudinal and vertical strain of reinforcement and concrete. Linear Variable Differential Transducer and concrete surface gage were also set to measure deflection and strain of concrete. Load-deflection relation and crack mode were analyzed at transfer and test and compared with the structural analysis

  • Chloride attack to reinforced concrete structures located in seaside can cause a serious problem of durability and maintenance during the service life. Corrosion of reinforced steel bars in concrete decreases the bond strength and finally causes the detachment of concrete cover. Polymer cement mortar is usually adopted to repair the deteriorated RC structures because of its strong bonding property. The recovered load-carrying capacity after the repair was simulated by non-linear FEM analysis. The properties of concrete, repairing materials, bonding materials and reinforced bar were used as input data. Four types of redispersible polymer powders were used as components of polymer cement mortar. Pull-off tests were carried out to examine the bond properties such as rigidity and strength. Effects of a corrosion inhibitor and the loss of reinforced bars due to the corrosion were also considered in this study. FEM modeling and analysis were conducted to propose the universal model. Physical bonding in the relationship between repair materials and steel reinforced bar is more dominant than chemical bonding.
