  • The seismic design regulations have not been applied to the low-rised buildings which are less than 6 stories in Korea. For these buildings which are designed only for gravity loads, theoretical formulas which can estimate the seismic strength of building are derived. The column hinge sway and beam hinge sway mechanism are assumed for the formulars. For the comparisons with the formulas, the results of push-over analyses of 3 and 4 storied buildings are used. It can be shown that the estimating formulas correspond well with the push-over analyses. And the seismic strength of building has a little relations with the number of bay and becomes larger as the building becomes lower. Also, as the ratio and strength of reinforcing steel increase, the seismic strength of building is increased.

  • Steel intermediate moment frames (IMFs) have been generally used as seismic load resisting systems (SLRSs) of a building to provide resistances against strong ground shaking. However, most of low and mid-rise steel buildings in Korea were constructed during pre-seismic code era or before the introduction of well-organized current seismic codes. It has been recognized that the seismic performance of these steel IMFs is still questionable. In order to respond to such a question, this study quantitatively investigates the seismic capacities of steel IMFs. Prototype models are built according to the number of stories, the levels of elastic seismic design base shear and the ductilities of structural components. Also, the other prototype models employing hysteretic energy dissipating devices (HEDDs) are considered. The collapse mechanism and the seismic performance of the prototype models are then described based on the results obtained from nonlinear-static and incremental-dynamic analyses. The seismic performance of the prototype models is assessed from collapse margin ratio (CMR) and collapse probability. From the assessment, the prototype model representing new steel IMFs has enough seismic capacities while, the prototype models representing existing steel IMFs provide higher collapse probabilities. From the analytic results of the prototype models retrofitted with HEDDs, the HEDDs enhance the seismic performance and collapse capacity of the existing steel IMFs. This is due to the energy dissipating capacity of the HEDDs and the redistribution of plastic hinges.

  • During the rapid economic growth in Korea since the 1970s, many underground facilities were constructed such as under passes and railways. Seismic design has been mandated in 1988, but the structures built before 1988 were not reflected on the seismic design. Accordingly, these underground structures require effective seismic reinforcing methods to ensure safety when the earthquake happens. By these reasons, in this study, using the proposed pre-flexed members, RC box structure was analyzed for seismic reinforcement of the corner. This method is based on a principle that enlarging the resistance against the external force by installing the pre-flexed member to the box structure corner. To evaluate validity, a newly developed member with CornerSafe was compared with traditional type reinforcement using experiments and finite element analysis. In finite element mode, nonlinearity of steel was modeled based on J2 plasticity model and concrete was based on CEB FIP MODEL CODE 1990. Also, composite ratios of box and pre-flexed member were computed for design application. The reinforcement and box structure were analyzed under the bond condition completely attached by the tie, and the results of experiment and finite element analysis were same in the force-displacement curve.

  • Dynamic earth pressure acting on geotechnical structures can be driving force or resisting force for the displacement of the structure according to the phase relation between the dynamic earth pressure and inertia force of structures. In this research, the evaluation procedure of the phase relation between the dynamic earth pressure and the inertia force was proposed. According to the procedure, numerical analyses on caisson foundation of bridges were performed and the phase relation was analyzed. The analysis results showed that the dynamic earth pressure becomes the driving force, which increases the displacement of the structure, if the displacement amplitude of ground is larger than that of structure due to the low stiffness of the ground, and the dynamic earth pressure becomes the resisting force against the displacement of the structure if the displacement amplitude of ground is smaller than that of structure due to the high stiffness of the ground.

  • This paper reviews fundamentals of a pseudo-static seismic design/analysis method for soil-reinforced segmental retaining walls. A comparative study on NCMA and FHWA seismic design guidelines, which are one of the most well known design guidelines for mechanically stabilized earth walls, was also performed. The results demonstrate that there exist significant discrepancies in the results of external stability analysis despite the same calculation model used in the two guidelines, due primarily to different seismic coefficient selection criteria. It is also demonstrated that the internal stability calculation model for NCMA guideline tends to yield larger seismic reinforcement force in the shallower reinforcement layers, resulting in an increased number of reinforcement layers at the top of reinforced wall and increased reinforcement lengths to ensure adequate anchorage capacity. The internal stability calculation model adopted by FHWA guideline, however, leads to redistribution of dynamic force to the lower reinforcement layers and thus results n an opposite trend of NCMA guideline. Findings from this study clearly demonstrate a need for more in-depth studies to develop a generally acceptable design/analysis method.

  • Various micropiles have been developed through research related to micropiles, which have been carried out with the increased use of micropiles. Among the micropile construction methods being developed, the triaxial micropile (tmp), which is recently developed for the purpose of increasing the horizontal bearing capacity (seismic resistance), is representative. The three-axis micropile has the advantage of a method that can resist horizontal load more effectively because three micropiles installed inclined on each axis resist horizontal load. However, there is a problem in effectively using this pile method due to insufficient research on the support characteristics of the triaxial group micropile. In order to effectively utilize the triaxial group micropile (tmp), it is required to evaluate the bearing capacity for the factors that affect the horizontal bearing capacity of the pile. Therefore, in this study, field horizontal loading Tests were performed for each load direction, field loading Tests were verified through three-dimensional finite element analysis, behavioral characteristics of triaxial micropiles were evaluated, and appropriate horizontal bearing capacity was analyzed in consideration of horizontal load directions.

  • Currently, the seismic design standards have been strengthened due to the occurrence of the Gyeongju and Pohang earthquake, and seismic performance evaluation of existing facilities is being conducted. It aims to secure a seismic performance effect during earthquakes by improving the micro-pile method, which can be constructed in limited confined places while minimizing damage to existing facilities. The improvement method is to construct all the piles in the square-tray-type plate on the top of the pile by constructing the slope pile in the form of an umbrella around the vertical pile, the main pillar. In this paper, the numerical analysis was performed to analyze the horizontal displacement behavior of an umbrella-type micropile for various real-measurement seismic waves in sandy soil. As a result of numerical analysis, the softer the ground, the better the effect of horizontal resistance of umbrella-type micropile. The horizontal displacement reduction effect was pronounced when the embedded depth was 15 m or more at the same ground strength, and it was found to be effective in earthquakes if it was settled on the ground with an N value of 30 or more. The embedded depth and horizontal displacement suppression effect of the micropile was proportional. Generally, the weaker the ground, the greater the displacement suppression effect. Umbrella-type micropile had a composite resistance effect in which the vertical pile resists the moment and inclined pile resists the axial force.

  • The Grout injected precast pile is widely used in rapid-transit railway bridge recently. The existing portland cement of well used filling at injected precast method that with low strength and environmental pollution, unstable in which ground water contamination by cement flow out, ground relaxation by water down, decrease of horizontality resistance and durability and load transfer divide etc. In particular, as in rapid-transit railway bridge need to secure safety from different angle with vibration of high speed train, horizontal force when train stop and earthquake. Works of foundation construction consider to requirements of the times to coal yard green growth. Together, new green foundation method for possible economics and securing of reduce the term of works are material to developments. Therefore, we carried out study that it is using and development new concept environment - friendly filling include durability and earthquake resistance, for secure safety and minimize environment pollution. To achieve this, we carried out difference tests that new green fillings of underwater concrete, high liquidity, high viscosity, early stiffness as compared to existing portland cement fillings. As results, new green filling have outstanding application at precast pile method and micropile construction method with vertical bearing capacity, horizontal bearing capacity and many case. From now on we will be looking forward to development of new environment-friendly foundation method from various further studies.

  • Shear wave velocity($V_S$), which can be obtained using various seismic tests, has been emphasized as representative geotechnical dynamic characteristic mainly for seismic design and seismic performance evaluation in the engineering field. For the application of conventional geotechnical site investigation techniques to geotechnical earthquake engineering, standard penetration tests(SPT) and piezocone penetration tests(CPTu) together with a variety of borehole seismic tests were performed at many sites in Korea. Through statistical modeling of the in-situ testing data, in this study, the correlations between $V_S$ and geotechnical in-situ penetrating data such as blow counts(N value) from SPT and piezocone penetrating data such as tip resistance ($q_t$), sleevefriction($f_s$), and pore pressure ratio($B_q$) were deduced and were suggested as an empirical method to determine $V_S$. Despite the incompatible strain levels of the conventional geotechnical penetration tests and the borehole seismic tests, it is shown that the suggested correlations in this study are applicable to the preliminary estimation of $V_S$ for Korean soil layers.

  • Abutment-to-pile connection in an integral abutment bridge is vulnerable to lateral displacement induced by thermal movement of the superstructure. However, previous researches have merely focused on the connection. In order to improve the performance of the connection, new abutment-to-pile connection designs were proposed based on quasi-static nonlinear finite element model. The reinforcement detail specified in PennDOT DM4 and HSS tube were barely effective in controlling crack growing but spiral rebar effectively performed to delay crack growth as well as absorbing energy capacity. However, it was found that delaying cracking and strengthening the connection also caused the high lateral load in superstructures. Consequently, shape of HP pile were modified to introduce plastic hinge of the HP pile for reducing the lateral load in superstructures. Connections with modified HP pile significantly prevented crack propagations under the lateral displacement.
