  • A remarkable discrepancy of lateral deformation of shear wall structures for seismic loads due to a rigid diaphragm assumption without floor slab modelling asks a study how much effective the slab stiffness ratio is to the lateral behaviour. Typical shear wall type 15 stories structure is selected to analysis using MIDAS-ADS2008 commercial softwares modelling three types; 1) rigid diaphragm (RD model) 2) considered out-of plane slab flexural stiffness (DB model), and 3) considered in and out of plane slab flexural stiffness (SRC model). Based on National Code of KBC2005, the Equivalent Static and Response Spectrum seismic analysis are undertaken to compare each responses of the three models. The differences of lateral responses due to the three slab stiffness ratios applied on the models are compared and discussed.

  • Five strengthened columns and an unstrengthened column were tested under constant axial load and cyclic lateral loads to examine the seismic performance of the unbounded strengthening procedure using wire ropes and T-plates. Main variables considered were the presence of mortar cover for strengthening steel element and anchorage method of T-plate. Test results clearly showed that T-plates having a proper anchorage contribute to transfer of applied moment as well as enhancement of ductility of reinforced concrete columns. However, T-plate not anchored fully into a column base can seldom transfer the externally applied moment, though it highly improves the ductility of column. The presence of mortar cover for strengthening steel elements is significantly effective in enhancing the initial stiffness and flexural capacity of the strengthened columns, but has an adversely effect on enhancing the ductility. The ultimate moment strength predicted from the extended section laminae method in better agreement with test results compared with predictions obtained using stress black specified in ACI 318-05.

  • The present study presents a nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) approach using the general program of Abaqus to evaluate the seismic response of unreinforced masonry walls strengthened with the steel bar truss system developed in the previous investigation. For finite element models of masonry walls, the concrete damaged plasticity (CDP) and meso-scale methods were considered on the basis of the stress-strain relationships under compression and tension and shear friction-slip relationship of masonry prisms proposed by Yang et al. in order to formulate the interface characteristics between brick elements and mortars. The predictions obtained from the FEA approach were compared with test results under different design parameters; as a result, a good agreement could be observed with respect to the crack propagation, failure mode, rocking strength, peak strength, and lateral load-displacement relationship of masonry walls. Thus, it can be stated that the proposed FEA approach shows a good potential for designing the seismic strengthening of masonry walls.

  • Elastomeric bearings composed of flexible rubber materials and steel reinforcement plates are widely used for seismic retrofit of bridges due to their excellent vertical stiffness and flexible lateral stiffness. Especially, it has the advantages of simple construction and low cost. Chloroprene rubber, a type of rubber material, has greater resistance to aging than natural rubber, but its performance is also degraded due to various deterioration factors. Although these aging characteristics are not reflected in the seismic design standards and seismic performance evaluation guidelines, it is reasonable to reflect this when related studies are accumulated. For chloroprene rubber, accelerated heat aging test was performed with variables of heating temperatures and exposure time to analyze shear characteristics. As aging progresses the maximum shear stress and shear strain decrease. Also, the shear stiffness is greatly increased at the same shear strain.

  • The seismic performance of non-ductile reinforced concrete (RC) frame retrofitted with H-beam frame and cast expansive mortar into joint between existing RC frame and H-beam frame is investigated experimentally and analytically. RC frames considered in the study contain non-ductile reinforcement details of low-rise school building constructed in Korea before 1988. The tests were conducted on half-scale specimens simulating the lower frame assemblages of a typical school building. Two one-bay, one-story RC frames with and without retrofitting with H-beam frame and expansive joint mortar were tested to failure. Test and analysis results indicated that seismic strengthening using H-beam and expansive joint mortar significantly improved the lateral strength and stiffness of non-ductile RC frame without installing anchor bolts to fit H-beam frame into existing RC frame. The effectiveness of seismic strengthening technology proposed in the study for non-ductile RC frame was verified experimentally and analytically.

  • In earthquake situations, broadcasting and communication services are directly linked to rapid on-site rescue and effective restoration works. Recently, a variety of base isolation devices are widely introduced on building floors to avoid critical seismic damages of telecommunication facilities. However, in buildings with long fundamental periods, those devices may have undesirable amplification of seismic responses due to resonance effect between the building floors and base isolation devices. This study performs the seismic safety evaluation of two types of base isolation devices deployed for telecommunication facilities in mid- and high-rise buildings through numerical and experimental approaches. It is found that mid- and high-rise buildings can have low-frequency dynamic responses at the top floor when being subjected to design basis earthquake loading. Furthermore, bi-directional shake table testing demonstrated that the selected base isolation devices can exhibit unstable dynamic behaviors under such low-frequency excitations of the floor.

  • The purpose of this paper is to review the applicability of the current standards for the evaluation method of input variables and performance level in seismic performance evaluation by dynamic plastic analysis of the concrete gravity-type dam to which MCE is applied, and to suggest improvements. To this end, a domestic concrete gravity-type dam was selected as a target facility, dynamic plasticity analysis was performed under various conditions, and applicability to input variables such as concrete tensile strength and breaking energy, was reviewed. By analyzing the effect of cracks at the bottom of the gravity dam on the stability of the activity, an improvement plan for the performance level evaluation method required to secure the water storage function was derived. If the proposed improvement plan is applied, it will have the effect of deriving more reasonable evaluation results than the current seismic performance evaluation method to which MCE is applied.

  • Elastometic bearings using flexible rubber materials have recently been widely applied for seismic retrofit of bridges. However, due to various factors, the aging of the rubber material progresses, which causes the shear stiffness change of the bearing, which affects the seismic performance of the bridge. For natural rubber, accelerated heat aging test was performed with variables of heating temperatures and exposure time to analyze shear characteristics. As aging progresses (i.e. increase of temperature and exposure time), the maximum shear stress and shear strain decrease. Also, the shear stiffness is greatly increased at the same shear strain. This means that the rubber material is hardened, implying that the seismic performance of the elastomeric bearing becomes poor.

  • This paper is a basic study to evaluate the possibility of earthquake-resistant reinforcement by reinforcing engineered cementitious composite in masonry members. In order to examine the performance according to the fiber mixing rate of the engineered cementitious composite, a test specimen was prepared according to the formulation design, and flow ability, compressive strength, flexural strength, length change rate, and direct tensile strain were measured. In addition, non-reinforced masonry members, masonry members reinforced with engineered cementitious composite, and masonry members in which glass fibers and wire mesh were separately reinforced with engineered cementitious composites were manufactured, and flexural strength and maximum displacement were measured. All specimens reinforced with engineered cementitious composite showed more than 16 times the effect of maximal strength compared to that of no reinforcement, and as a result of examining the crack shape, the energy dissipation ability was excellent, confirming the possibility of seismic reinforcement.

  • The purpose of this paper is to review the appropriateness of the application method for the value of the damping ratio suggested in the current design standards and evaluation guidelines when evaluating the seismic performance of concrete dams and to suggest improvements. As a result of the study, for the magnitude of the damping ratio in the dynamic elastic analysis, it is necessary to refer to the case of a similar dam in which the magnitude of the earthquake load is similar and the reproducibility of the damping ratio has been verified. Considering this, it is necessary to apply a low damping ratio and consider adding hysteresis damping in case of nonlinear behavior. In addition, since the concrete dam body located on the rock has insignificant radiation attenuation effect, it is not reasonable to increase the damping ratio of the concrete dam body to reflect the radiation damping. Therefore, in order to evaluate the realistic seismic performance of concrete dams, it is necessary to revise the damping ratio-related contents contained in the current dam design standards and evaluation guidelines.
