  • In this study, the efficacy of the newly developed smart passive control system to improve seismic performance of base isolated building structures is numerically verified. The smart passive control system consists of a magnetorheological (MR) damper and an electromagnetic induction (EMI) part. The damping characteristics of an MR damper can be controlled by the current generated in an EMI part according to the Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction. An EMI part consisting of a permanent magnet and a solenoid coil could substitute a control system including sensors, a controller and an external power supply in a conventional smart control system. The benchmark control problem for a base isolated building presented by the american society of civil engineers is considered for numerical simulation. The control performance of the smart passive control system is compared to that of the conventional smart control system using MR dampers. It is demonstrated from the numerical simulation results that the smart passive control system is useful to improve the seismic performance of base isolated buildings.

  • The fragility curves of seismic retrofitted bridges by steel jacketing at bridge columns and restrainers at expansion joints after the 1994 Northridge earthquake are developed. Fragility curves are represented by lognormal distribution functions with two parameters (median and log-standard deviation) and developed as a function of peak ground acceleration(PGA). Two parameters in the lognormal distribution are estimated by the maximum likelihood method. The sixty ground acceleration time histories for Los Angeles area developed for FEMA SAC project are used for the dynamic analysis of bridges. The comparison of fragility curves of the bridges before and after column retrofit demonstrates that the improvement of the bridges with steel jacketing on the seismic performance is excellent for the damage states defined in this study. The comparison of fragility curves of the bridges before and after the installation of restrainers at expansion joints also shows the improvement in the seismic performance of restrained bridges for the severe damage state.

  • For the seismic performance, it is necessary to prevent the destruction of the expansion joint device due to the appropriate deformation of the expansion joint device due to the seismic force. Recently, the hinge is installed on the fingering of the expansion joint device in Korea, New products are being developed. In this paper, we have experimentally evaluated the real scale resistance of the expansion joints with rotational finger joints against load at right angle to the bridge axis. Experimental results show that the maximum horizontal displacement is about 21.1mm for conventional stretch joints and 51.00mm for seismic stretch joints. It is presumed that the existing expansion joint test specimen is resistant to the load in a direction perpendicular to the throat axis, and then the bending and shear deformation of the finger are excessively generated and the fracture phenomenon is likely to occur. On the other hand, in the case of the seismic expansion joint, the deformation of the load due to the load is absorbed by the hinge of the finger with respect to the load in the direction perpendicular to the throat, so that only horizontal deformation in the direction of load action.

  • This study relates to a fixing device for gas piping installed in a building such as an apartment or a building. The gas piping is fixed to the inside of the housing so as to buffer the gas piping in all directions, thereby relieving vibration caused by an earthquake or an impact, Disclosed is an earthquake-proof fixing device for a gas pipeline that can minimize damages caused by damage to an earthquake and a gas pipeline by preventing damage and breakage. An apparatus for fixing a gas pipe to a bracket provided on a wall or a wall of a building, the apparatus comprising: a housing coupled to a wall or a bracket and coupled to the inside of the housing; a gas pipe penetrating through the housing to fix the gas pipe; The first plate spring includes a first plate spring formed with a plurality of concave-convex portions that are elastically supported in four directions. The first plate spring is screwed to the front surface or the rear surface of the housing. The lower plate is coupled to one end and the other end, And a pair of first adjusting screws for adjusting the elastic force of the spring. Through this study, damage and damage of gas piping due to earthquake or impact can be minimized.

  • A design procedure for velocity-dependent supplemental dampers, such as viscous or viscoelastic dampers, required to meet the desired performance objectives was developed using displacement spectra. The amount of supplemental damping required to satisfy given performance limit state was obtained first from the nonlinear static procedure using displacement spectra, then dampers were appropriately distributed throughout the stories to realize the required damping. The proposed method was applied to multi-story steel frames, and the structures were analyzed by time history analysis to validate the accuracy of the design procedure. According to the analysis results the maximum displacements of the model structures retrofitted by the supplemental dampers turned out to be restrained well within the given target values.

  • Conventional lead-rubber bearings may be unstable in case of strong ground motions. To address this problem, this paper proposed a new concept of isolation device wherein shape memory alloy wires were incorporated in an elastomeric bearing. A three-span continuous steel bridge was used for seismic analyses to compare the performance of lead-rubber and proposed bearings. The proposed bearings showed almost the same performance as the lead-rubber bearings. In particular, the proposed bearings limited relative displacement effectively with strong ground motions and recovered its original undeformed shape.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the seismic effects of Lead Rubber Bearing base isolators on bridges. Base isolation is the tool to minimize the effect of earthquake before the seismic force is transfered to the structure. Currently, many structures including the buildings, power plants, and bridges, were built and planned with base isolation method. The simple model is developed for bridges with Lead Rubber Bearings. Equations of motion are solved by Newmark ${\beta}$ method. Springs representing the base isolators are assumed as bilinear springs and piers are modeled as nonlinear springs implementing Q-HYST model. Analysis is performed for the selected bridge. El Centro (N-S) earthquake(1940) is used. Deck displacement, pier ductility and pier shear force are calculated for the various Lead Rubber Bearings.

  • Earthquake resistant design should provide a description of the structural failure mechanism under earthquakes as well as satisfy the requirement of other designs, e.g. design strengths of each structural member should be equal or greater than the required strengths. The reason of such a requirement is the randomness of seimic loads different from other loads. In this study, a typical bridge is selected as an analysis bridge and the procedure is given to get the ductile failure mechanism through connection design. It is shown with the procedure that the earthquake resistant capacity can be ensured within structural member's strengths required by other designs, without cost raise by strength increase of structural members or by use of shock absorbing device e.g. shock transfer unit.
