  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the strength and ductility improvement of columns retrofitted by steel-fiber composite plate. Test specimens strengthened by three different materials - steel plate(SP), carbon fiber sheet(CF) and fiber-steel composite plate(CP) - were tested under cyclic lateral load with a constant axial load equal to $20\%$ of the axial compression capacity. The structural capacity of composite plate was good or better than that of other retrofitting materials. Test results from all retrofitted specimens showed that considerably higher retrofitting amount was required for strength enhancement. The ductility of retrofitted columns by composite plate was fairly improved. Also, energy ductility ratio was more effective than displacement ductility ratio for ductility estimation of retrofitted column.

  • Conventional lead-rubber bearings may be unstable in case of strong ground motions. To address this problem, this paper proposed a new concept of isolation device wherein shape memory alloy wires were incorporated in an elastomeric bearing. A three-span continuous steel bridge was used for seismic analyses to compare the performance of lead-rubber and proposed bearings. The proposed bearings showed almost the same performance as the lead-rubber bearings. In particular, the proposed bearings limited relative displacement effectively with strong ground motions and recovered its original undeformed shape.

  • Due to the recent earthquake that has occurred worldwide, interest in seismic reinforcement of structures is increasing. In order to improve the seismic performance of the structure, the seismic reinforcement of the column should be made. Various seismic retrofit methods are being developed to improve the seismic performance of columns. In this study, in order to improve the seismic performance of RC columns, an numerical study was conducted to evaluate the seismic performance of the columns by applying a surface constrained pressure. For the numerical study, the experimental study on the column was used, and the failure shape and behavior characteristics of the experimental results and the numerical results were compared. As a result of the numerical study, the ductile behavior of the RC columns occurred according to the strength of the surface constraining stress. In addition, ductile behavior occurred almost constant above a certain surface constrained pressure. Compared with the numerical results and the experimental results, he reinforcing effect of the used seismic reinforcement of the column in experimental study was compared with the value of the surface constrained pressure for the RC column, and the seismic reinforcing effect was examined as the surface constrained pressure value for the RC column. In conclusion, in this work, surface constrained stress and constrained strength for ductile behavior of RC columns are derived. Based on the results derived, it is believed that it can be used as basic data on the review of seismic design methods and seismic performance complementary effects using ductile behavior induction of RC columns.

  • In current seismic design provisions, a reduced beam section with bolted web (RBS-B) connections is only permitted for intermediate moment frames (IMF). This study evaluated the seismic performance of steel moment resisting frame systems having RBS-B connections designed according to current seismic design provisions. For this purpose, 12 archetypal IMF systems having two different span lengths (9m, 6m) were designed considering two design load levels (SDC $C_{max}$, SDC $C_{min}$). A nonlinear analytical model that can simulate hysteretic behavior of an RBS-B connection was also developed in this study. The procedures specified in ATC 63 are used to conduct a seismic performance evaluation. Moreover, this study conducts the seismic performance evaluation of IMF systems designed according to a new design method proposed by the authors in the previous study. It was observed that several model frames designed according to current seismic design provisions did not provide satisfactory collapse margin ratios (ACMR). This study also showed that the model frames designed according to the new design procedures had a sufficient ACMR.

  • In this study, a seismic performance evaluation of unreinforced masonry buildings was conducted based on a revised draft of the outline of the seismic performance evaluation of existing buildings. The procedure of the performance evaluation is composed of three-steps, which are a preliminary evaluation, a first-level detailed evaluation, and a second-level detailed evaluation, where evaluation is conservatively conducted in the beginning and then more detailed evaluations are gradually conducted. For the study, ten two-story unreinforced masonry buildings were selected and evaluated using the three-step evaluation. The result showed that the performance levels between the preliminary and the first-level detailed evaluations were reversed, which is different from the intent of the procedure. Therefore, in the near future, the problems in each evaluation step that are presented in the results of this study need to be refined.

  • Two methods of the nonlinear static pushover analysis have been presented for the performance-based seismic design and evaluation of MDOF continuous bridges. Guidelines for buildings presented in FEMA-273 applying the Displacement Coefficient Method (DCM) and in ATC applying the Capacity Spectrum Method(CSM) have been modified for MDOF bridges. Two methods are compared with the time- history analysis. The lateral load distribution pattern for seismic loads has been examined in the static pushover analysis. The force-based fiber frame finite element has been implemented in the modeling of reinforced concrete piers.

  • In recent decades, unpredictable earthquakes around the world have caused massive damage. The incidence of earthquakes in Korea that are larger than M5.0 has increased the social demand for earthquake policies. As the seismic performance of buildings has been proven to be the most effective damage mitigation responsibility from past earthquake damage cases, the US and Japan are implementing a seismic retrofitting support system. In Korea, this is being implemented through tax benefits, but it is being neglected by the owners of private buildings. As a solution to this problem, this paper reviews, compares, and analyzes the domestic and overseas seismic retrofitting support systems, and suggests ways to improve the policy and support system for revitalizing the seismic retrofitting of private buildings based on the results.

  • In this study, to improve the connection performance between the existing reinforced concrete (R/C) frame and the strengthening member, we proposed a new H-section steel frame with elastic pad (HSFEP) system for seismic rehabilitation of existing medium-to-low-rise reinforced concrete (R/C) buildings. This HSFEP strengthening system exhibits an excellent connection performance because an elastic pad is installed between the existing structure and reinforcing frame. The method shows a strength design approach implemented via retrofitting, to easily increase the ultimate lateral load capacity of R/C buildings lacking seismic data, which exhibit shear failure mechanism. Two full-size two-story R/C frame specimens were designed based on an existing R/C building in Korea lacking seismic data, and then strengthened using the HSFEP system; thus, one control specimen and one specimen strengthened with the HSFEP system were used. Pseudodynamic tests were conducted to verify the effects of seismic retrofitting, and the earthquake response behavior with use of the proposed method, in terms of the maximum response strength, response displacement, and degree of earthquake damage compared with the control R/C frame. Test results revealed that the proposed HSFEP strengthening method, internally applied to the R/C frame, effectively increased the lateral ultimate strength, resulting in reduced response displacement of R/C structures under large scale earthquake conditions.

  • In this study, a new RCSF (Reinforced Concrete Steel Frame) external connection method is proposed for seismic strengthening of medium-and low-rise reinforced concrete buildings. The RCSF method, proposed in this study, is capable of carrying out the seismic retrofitting construction while residents can live inside structures. The method is one of the strength design approach by retrofit which can easily increase the ultimate lateral load capacity of concrete buildings controlled by shear. The pseudo-dynamic test, designed using a existing school building in Korea, was carried out in order to verify the seismic strengthening effects of the proposed method in terms of the maximum load carrying capacity and ductility. Test results revealed that the proposed RCSF strengthening method installed in RC frame enhanced conspicuously the strength and displacement capacities, and the method can resist markedly under the large scaled earthquake intensity level.
