Fault gouge samples were collected from the fault cores of the boundary faults between the Cretaceous Basement and the Tertiary Waeup Basin. Fractal dimensions (D) were obtained by using survivor grains which were analysed from six thin sections of the gouges under the optical microscope. The elliptical survivor grains show a shape preferred orientation almost parallel to clay foliation in matrix, suggesting that it was formed by the rotation of the survivor grains in abundant fine-grained matrix during repeated fault slips. The size distributions of the survivor grains follow power-laws with fractal dimensions in the 2.40-3.02 range. D values of all samples but one are higher than a specific D value equal to 2.58 which predicts the self similarity of fragmentation process in constrained comminution model (Sammis et al., 1987), which indicates large fault slip and multiple faulting. Probably the higher D values than 2.58 mean the non-self-similar evolution of cataclastic rocks where fragmentation mechanism changed from constrained comminution to the grain abrasion accompanying selective fracture of larger grains.
Three types of bis[3-(dialkyloxylphosphorothionyl) thio-2-methylpropanyloxy]alkane (BAPA) drived from alkane diol were synthesized. The principal chain of each BAPA had a different carbon number, i.e., 6, 9, and 11. The three types of synthesized BAPA were compared to zinc dialkyl dithiophosphates (ZDDPs) in terms of abrasion resistance. A four-ball test was conducted to evaluate the anti-abrasion performance of the synthesized BAPA according to the length of the principal carbon chain. Each product was added to an additive at a concentration of 1% of the base oil weight, and the wear scar diameter (WSD) was measured as 0.472, 0.459, and 0.480 mm, respectively. Among the BAPA compounds, dialkyl dithiophosphoric acid (DDP), which is the side chain of bis[methacryloyloxy] nonane (BMOO9), was synthesized by varying the carbon number, i.e., 4, 8, and 12, and subsequently the 4-ball test was carried out. The WSD was determined as 0.537, 0.459, and 0.531 mm, respectively. As a result, it was found that when a side chain is short, a thin film is formed. In contrast, a long side chain hindered the formation of a film, and hence the best result was achieved when the carbon number was 8. As for the ZDDPs, the WSD was determined to be 0.563 mm, when measured under the same conditions. The measurements confirm that the synthesized BAPA compounds are superior to the ZDDPs as abrasion resistance additives.

Refractories used in low-rank coal gasification reactors are usually exposed in a highly corrosive $H_2S$ gas at less than $1000^{\circ}C$, and their mechanical properties such as erosion resistance and fracture strength decline with the exposure time. However, the cause of the degradation of the mechanical properties has little reported yet. In this paper, two kinds of castable refractories with different refractoriness had been exposed in a $H_2O/N_2/H_2S$ mixed gas with high $H_2S$ content for 100 hours at $900^{\circ}C$, and the changes of microstructure, crystalline phases and erosion resistance were compared before and after the corrosion test. The weight of the refractories decreases due to the elution of silica in the specimens after the corrosion test. The capillary porosities of the samples are reduced, but the erosion resistance of the samples is fatally weakened after the corrosion test. There also are changes in constituent phases; dmitryivanovite ($CaAl_2O_4$) and amorphous silica ($SiO_2$) disappear, and gypsum ($CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2OS$) and kaolinite ($Al_2Si_2O_5(OH)_4$) newly appear after the corrosion test. It is obvious that the phase change from dmitryivanovite that works as a binding agent in the castable refractory to gypsum is the main reason of the degradation of the erosion resistance, because the mechanical properties of gypsum are much poorer than those of dmitryivanovite.
In this work, the effect of carbon nanofiber (CNF) on thermal properties, and friction and wear behavior of CNF/PMMA composites were examined. While thermal properties of the composites were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry, thermograyimetric analyzer, and dynamic mechanical analyzer friction and wear behaviors were examined using a friction and wear tester. The glass transition temperature (Tg), integral procedural decomposition temperature (IPDT), storage modulus (E'), and tan ${\delta}$ appeared at higher temperatures with increasing CNF content, which were probably attributed to the presence of strong interactions between the carbonaceous fillers and the PMMA resins matrix. The wear loss in the composites decreased at 0.1 wt% CNF and then increased with 5-10 wt% CNF content. This was due to the existence of large aspect ratio CNF in PMMA which led to an alignment of PMMA chains and an increase of mechanical interlocking, resulting in the formation of crosslinked structures between CNF and PMMA in the composite.

To study the effects of structural difference and fatty acid chain length of glyceride, new dispersion agents having various glyceride structures such as mono-, di-, and tri-, were prepared using glycerol extracted from palm oil and fatty acid having various chain length ranges from 12 to 18. These dispersion agents were mixed with the rubber compounds and compared with conventional metal salt dispersion agents. Glyceride dispersion agent provided remarkable improvement in silica dispersion, compared to metal salt fatty acidic one, even though the viscosity of mixtures was relatively high due to low lubricating effect, and this was approved by mechanical properties, wear properties, and Payne effect. Also, the longer in chain length of fatty acid and the smaller in numbers of fatty acid, the dispersity of silica was improved.

We have studied on the tribological characteristics of surface modification by Arc Ion Implantation(AIP) coating method. Coating materials were deposited by the Titanium carbide(TiC) and Titanium nitride(TiN). An experimental process was established to determine the tribological characteristics of friction and wear behaviour with the variation of applied load, temperature and the time by the Falex friction and wear test machine. The results, It can be improved that when the surface modification of hard coatings(TiC, TiN) was deposited steel, the tribological characteristics become better. It is argued that improved because of excellence of the anti-wear, the extreme pressure properties and the heat stability.
Friction, wear and corrosion characteristics of various MoS$_2$ bonded film lubricants were investigated to apply them to automotive wheel joints. MoS$_2$ bonded film lubricants were formulated by combinations of several additives and binders, and they were coated onto the pre-treated surfaces of specimens. Friction and wear characteristics were evaluated with Falex pin & vee-block test and LFW-1 block-on-ring test. For the corrosion resistant characteristics of the films, salt solution spray corrosion tests were performed. Results showed that MoS$_2$ bonded films containing both inorganic and organic corrosion-resistant additives yielded a synergy effect on anti-corrosion resistance. Also, binders having the better water-proof and thermal stability showed the lower friction and higher corrosion resistance.
