In the movie, there are three steps which are based on the temporal flow of narrative. shows the web-like structure of desire especially by focusing on the male character Sim Hakkyu. The relationship among characters in is gradually broken because of the desire. Moreover, the desire pushes Sim Chong who is Sim Hakkyu's daughter into the sacrifice. This part seems similar with the narrative of SimChong-Jeon which has been transmitted since 18~19 century in Choson dynasty. However, also tells a different story which describes the progress of Sim Hakkyu's seeking the real relationship filled with love. This difference is able to make people read with the 'stroytelling' point of view. All the lack or problem in is closely related to the desire of Sim Hakkyu. His narrative is something different from the typical story of SimChong-Jeon. A new narrative of Sim Hakkyu is not Sim Chong centered story but rather the anti of it. 'The other narrative' in seems social practice of storytelling in order to break down the preconception of SimChong-jeon called 'cannon'. This is the storytelling strategy of and it suggests the another way of creating new narrative which is based on the classical cannon.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the characters and narratives of series films and to extract corresponding elements of film music to compare and analyze how musical elements were utilized. The scope of the study was analyzing the story structure and characters of the films "Mary Poppins" and "Mary Poppins Returns" and the corresponding film music. After comparing the contents of the film "Mary Poppins" and "Mary Poppins Returns," the film matched the film music equivalent to the similar scenes of the two films. As a result, seven of the 11 songs of "Mary Poppins" overlap with those used in similar narratives of "Mary Poppins Returns", and eight songs overlap in "Mary Poppins Returns". Seven songs from "Mary Poppins" and eight songs from "Mary Poppins Returns" can be divided into nine scenes in total when connected to a common narrative. Among them, "A Spoonful of Sugar" from "Mary Poppins", "Jolly Holiday", "A cover is not the Book" from "Mary Poppins Returns" and "Triple light fantastic" were overlapping songs with narratives. Based on this, it analyzes leitmotiv film music, focusing on characters from the films "Mary Poppins" and "Mary Poppins Returns." The common leitmotivs in the two films are Mary Poppins leitmotiv, Lesson leitmotiv, Lullaby leitmotiv, World leitmotiv, Chimney Sweeper leitmotiv, Up & Down leitmotiv, Chimney Sweeper leitmotiv, and Sky leitmotiv. The characteristic rhythm and pitch used in Mary Poppins leitmotivs were used in the overall song featuring Mary Poppins. Through this, the elements of music symbolizing Mary Poppins, a key figure, were matched to the films "Mary Poppins" and "Mary Poppins Returns" and modified according to the narrative flow. The analysis results of this work have theoretical significance in that it is necessary to analyze the narratives and film music of series films to discover common features and consider how they are matched in theoretical terms.

  • This research studies the specific cases of Ryusuke Hamaguchi's re-arrangement of the original novel Net emo Samite mo(2010) by Tomoka Shibasaki to his 2018 film Asako I&II. The study focuses on the difference that has been made between the original novel and the film, which occurred after Ryusuke adapted the novel's "Telling" to the film's "Showing." The presence of the passive protagonist and the repetitions are the elements that have been avoided from the traditional Screenwriting theory for a long. Instead of avoiding it, Ryusuke Hamaguchi inherits these traits of the original novel when re-arranging to his film. Despite the presence of a passive protagonist, Hamaguchi's method of adaption increases the attention of the audience by using the other tools of Hollywood's tradition: the use of goal and want of the protagonist. In addition, Hamaguchi's storytelling strategy captivates both the modern cinema audiences and the classical film audiences by creating a story, which both repetitive structure and normative narrative structure were applied.

  • This research studies the specific cases of how Hayao Miyazaki re-arranges Hollywood's conservative storytelling model, such as the three-act, eight-sequences structure, and the use of antagonist and antagonistic force, and how he applies them into his fairytale-like narratives to increase the attention of the audience. At the same time, this research also studies the cases of how fairytale-like characters of Miyazaki's storytelling make up for the drawbacks caused by the re-arranged narrative structure and the relationship between the characters, to make the audience keep track to follow the protagonist's journey. This research focuses on the re-arrangement of the three-act structure and the eight-sequences structure. For the details, this research focuses on the alternative use of antagonistic force in My Neighbor Totoro and the cases of antagonists turning to the protagonists' side around the mid-point in Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle. Also, the study shows how Miyazaki expands the second act (the third to the sixth sequence) and shortens the third act (the seventh to the eighth sequence) to earn the time for the audience to be in the same position with the protagonist, and how the fairytale-like characters of these films make up for the disadvantages caused by the shortened third act.

  • Most of experimental films have different visual techniques and aesthetic values compared to those of narrative films. This difference makes it difficult to understand experimental films. In order to understand in what ways the experimental film has broken with the convention of narrative film, it is important to examine certain structure of experimental film. The important aspect of many experimental films is the way that they have altered the nature of narrative by changing the way that we perceive the succession of image. In particular, The tradition of American Sturcture film has been the contribution of the experimental film to expand the limits of this rule system and evolve a more personal and organic approach to the continuum of film. This approach has been a method of understanding experimental films and still a useful aesthetic tools both reading personal films and making innovative works.

  • As Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Phase 3 concluded in 2019, it is time to systematically analyze the phenomenal storytelling of the franchise. In order to identify the structure of the continuous stories focusing on 'Iron Man', the central character of MCU Phase 1-3, this study used the "Save the Cat (STC)" paradigm as the tool for narrative analysis. The eight films with 1,066 minute-run time in total was analyzed based on the 15-beat STC paradigm by adjusting the distance ratio between each beat of its prototype originally based on standard films of 110 minute-run time. The results reveal that all 15 beats of the combined texts were fairly properly discovered in the positions suggested by the adjusted STC paradigm. Moreover, through the investigation, the vast text was able to be analyzed in a more comprehensive manner in the process of reconfirming the meaning of the dramatic reversals corresponding to each beat against the entire narrative. As expected, the STC paradigm proved to be a meaningful signpost for plot drives even for such a vast text. Therefore, it is believed that application of this paradigm would help not only analyze but also design other serialized franchises as well. Prior to that, however, it would be necessary to further examine the combined texts for other major characters in MCU or other franchises designed in a similar form to MCU movies through the same paradigm to verify effectiveness of such application.

  • Visual narrative or storytelling involve two important aspects of the cognitive perception: the conscious and subconscious. Color is one of the cognitive storytelling elements, its interpretation is captured by the subconscious and it is considered an emotional resource due to its psychological background. On the other hand, the character is also part of cognitive perception and storytelling tool, but this is interpreted consciously, character is considered as a logical resource. Ghibli and Disney have organized their cinematographic techniques in different ways, so it would be unfair to say that one narrative style is better than the other, it depends of perception of beauty which varies according to society. However the present study seeks to determine the differences between Ghibli and Disney narrative style, taking as reference color. Ghibli and Disney are perfect example about color effects as a storytelling agent, It can be classified in two aspects: dynamics of color and color as a narrative sequence. The dynamics of color analyzes how color acts and is perceived into a stage, its meaning and symbolism regardless of the character's actions. The narrative sequence studies how color thermologic evolves in scene's development.

  • The article deals with the reality subject of animations. Animations are created on the basis of fantasy. Disney's introduction of the narratives and styles of live action film into the field of animation, which laid a foundation for the hyper-reality animation, has produced an unintended consequence of marginalizing other animation genres which have emphasized fantasy through free experimentations of various images. A combination of Disney's world view of hyper-reality with later-developed 3D computer animation technology has made fantastic figures and spaces much more real than the real ones, and succeeded in creating a matrix of simulacre, a world of mere copies without the original.
