  • We investigate the effect of the wing width and thickness of a Double-Sided Deep-Ridge(DSDR) vertical directional coupler on the coupling length dependent on the polarization, We have found that the DSDR vertical directional coupler without a wing does not have polarization independent coupling lengths. The variation of the coupling length of TE and TM modes and the difference between the coupling lengths of the two modes are negligible as the wing width increases beyond the specific wing width for the same wing thickness. Thus, we can see that a DSDR vertical directional coupler has a wing width larger than the minimum wing width to obtain the polarization independent coupling length. The minimum wing width increases as the wing thickness increases for the same core thickness and as the core thickness decreases for the same wing width. Also, we have found that the minimum wing thickness is determined by the core thickness and the minimum wing thickness decreases as the core thickness increases.

  • In Vollenhovia emeryi (Hymenoptera: Myrmicinae), the queen and the male are known to be clonally reproduced. Its colonies can be classified into the two morphs with the wing length of the queen caste. The morph with normal wings is called the long-winged and the other the short-winged that is brachypterous. Even though the two morphs are considered a species, investigation on the species status of the two morphs was suggested with natural separation in nature and the distinctive wing morphology. It has yet to be determined whether the clonally reproduced queen caste is haploid or diploid. Our data clearly show that the two morphs are the same species and the queen caste is diploid on the basis of the genome size data comparison.

  • This paper contains a new approach to blade section design method for marine propellers. The hydrodynamic characteristics of 2-D section are highly influenced by its geometrical parameters i.e., thickness and camber distributions and leading edge radius etc. To consider fully turbulent flow field near 2-D section. the finite volume method with k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulent model which solve Reynolds time averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) equation is applied. In this study, O-type grid system that can provide many calculation points on blade surface is used. The results were compared with those of the experiment of NACA0012 to confirm the accuracy of the developed codes. The goal of this study is the development of a blade section with high efficiency and low drag. To achieve this, we carried out the tests of lift, drag and cavitation characteristics in cavitation tunnel. The results of experiment were compared with numerical results in order to validate the proposed blades design method. By comparing the numerical results with the experiments, we found that the new blade section, KH28 allows superior performance in efficiency and cavitation avoidance characteristics. We further investigated the blade section design method and an application study of this section, KH28 to apply to the marine propeller. In order to improve the accuracy of numerical results on prediction of lift and drag, we conclude here that the 2-layer boundary model must be used.

  • Some sized centrifugal compressors were designed and their performance measured to investigate the effects of exit blade thickness, width and back swept angle. The impeller of larger blade thickness shows low pressure ratio compared with that of smaller ones. Backswept angle also have a large effect on the efficiency. Measured values of slip factor are quite different from the estimated values of the Wiesner-Busemann model and an increase in the flow late.
