  • It has been a growing concern how to use Nanji-Island landfill and other refuse landfills located around metropolitan areas. In this paper, settlement characteristics of Nanji -Island landfill were studied by analyzing the data collected over the period of two years. The settlement characteristics were similar to the analyzed settlement characteristics of 24 refuse landfills in the United States. The model proposed by Bjarngard and Edger(1990) model is considered to be suitable for the long-term prediction of Wnil -Island landfill. The ten-year -period prediction value of Bjarngard and Edger (1990) model is considerably different from that of Power Creep Model. If existing settlement models used for long-term prediction of the settlement characteristics of landfill are not analyzed thoroughly there remains the possibility of including considerable prediction errors.

  • Schlumberger electrical soundings and Coincident loop time-domain electromagnetic soundings were made on the Nanji-do landfill to investigate the nature of fills and the subsurface structure. The measured data were transformed into apparent resistivity values and then inverted in terms of 1-D resistivity models. At 6 points, both measurements were carried out to check the validity of the interpreted subsurface electrical structures. Interpreted layered models from each method show a good agreement. Obtained models show that a conductive zone exist below the shallow resistive zone. Conductive zone, which is considered to be influenced by decomposition of organic waste materials and infiltration of precipitation, is terminated by resistive zone which is considered as basement. Considering the fact that conductive zone extends to the basement and there exist no barrier layers such as clay layers, contaminant plumes are likely to flow into the groundwater directly.

  • The Nanjido Landfill has recently become one of the most important environmental sites for a hydrogeological study. Hydrogeological study was performed by understanding the current situation, analyzing hydrogeological information, and constructing a hydrogeological data base. The constructed data base was used for the analyses of several important phenomena in the Nanjido Landfill. Saturated hydraulic conductivity and underground temperature were measured. Based on the hydraulic conductivity and rainfall data, net infiltration rates were estimated. Leachate production rates are estimated by using the data base. The data base and a hydraulic model were used to understand the formation of the so called floating leachate layer.

  • This research was carried out from 2001. 4 until 2001. 5 in order to examine the level of soil contamination in the vicinity of Nanjido. The sampling was done at near the Nanjido soil. At the each sampling site we did the sampling at different depth- surface(0~15cm deep), 1m deep, 2m deep, 3m deep. The contamination of Cd, Cu, Pb, As, $Cr^{+6}$, and Hg were tasted and analysed by spectra AA. The examination showed that the average concentration level of the entire sampled soil was Cd, 0.229mg/kg, Cu 8.349mg/kg, Pb : 11.083mg/kg, As : 0.298mg/kg, $Cr^{+6}$ : 0.124mg/kg, and Hg : 0.134mg/kg. The concentration level of at the depth of 0-l5cm, came out to be Cd : 0.305mg/kg, Cu : 8.464mg/kg, Pb : 11 383mg/kg, As : 0.128mg/kg, $Cr^{+6}$ : 0.153mg/kg, and Hg : 0.092mg/kg. It shows that in the cases of Cd and C $r^{+6}$ the average concentration level of the whole sampled soil was about 80% of that of 0-l5cm depth. And as for Hg and As. the average concentration level of the entire sampled soil came out to be approximately twice as high as the sample soil from the depth surface, As for Cu and Pb, there was not much difference between the entire samples average concentration level and the concentration level of surface. It was hard to find much relationship between the depth of each site where sampling was done and the level of concentration, the concentration level of Pb and Cu at the sampling site C and E was quite high, which suggests that it has been affected by the polluted the hyang-dong stream and fill random up waste.
