  • A modified $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$model is proposed for calculation of transitional boundary-layer flows with changing pressure gradient. In order to develop the model for this problem, the flow is divided into three regions; pre-transition region, transition region and fully turbulent region. The effect of pressure gradient is taken into account in stream-wise intermittency factor, which bridges the eddy-viscosity models in the pre-transition region and the fully turbulent region. From intermittency data in various flows, Narashima's intermittency function, F(${\gamma}$), has been found to be proportional to $\chi$$^{n}$ according to the extent of pressure gradient. Three empirical correlations of intermittency factor being analyzed, the best one was chosen to calculate three benchmark cases of bypass transition flows with different free-stream turbulence intensity under arbitrary pressure gradient. It was found that the variations of skin friction and shape factor as well as the profiles of mean velocity in the transition region were very satisfactorily predicted.

  • It has been long suspected that the transition region may give rise to local pressure fluctuations and radiated sound that are different from those created by the fully-developed turbulent boundary layer at equivalent Reynolds number. Experimental investigation described in this paper concerns the characteristics of pressure fluctuations at the transition. Flush-mounted microphones and hot wires are used to measure the pressure fluctuations and local flow velocities within the boundary layer in the low noise wind tunnel. From this experiment we could observe the spatial and temporal development process of T-S wave using Wigner-Ville method and find the relations between the characteristic frequency of T-S wave and free stream velocity and the boundary layer thickness based on nondimensional pressure spectra scaled on outer variables.

  • A study is analyzed on the transient flow of supersonic diffuser and performed on the of supersonic diffuser with Computational Fluid Dynamic. The flow field of supersonic diffuser is calculated using Axisymmetric two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation with $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulence model. The transient simulation is compared in terms of mach number and temperature of vacuum chamber according to the chamber pressure of starting transient on Liquid rocket engine.

  • Multimode boundary-layer transition on a NACA0012 airfoil is experimentally investigated under periodically passing wakes and the moderate level of free-stream turbulence. The periodic wakes are generated by rotating circular cylinders clockwise or counterclockwise around the airfoil. The free-stream turbulence is produced by a grid upstream of the rotating cylinder, and its intensity(Tu) at the leading edge of the airfoil is $0.5\;or\;3.5\;{\%}$. The Reynolds number ($Re_c$) based on chord length (C) of the alrfoil is $2.0{\times}10^5$, and Strouhal number ($St_c$) of the passing wake is about 0.7. Time- and phase-averaged streamwise mean velocities and turbulence fluctuations are measured with a single hot-wire probe, and especially, the corresponding wall skin friction is evaluated using a computational Preston tube method. The wake-passing orientation changes pressure distribution on the airfoil in a different manner irrespective of the free-stream turbulence. Regardless of free-stream turbulence level, turbulent patches for the receding wakes propagate more rapidly than those for the approaching wake because adverse pressure gradient becomes larger. The patch under the high free-stream turbulence ($Tu=3.5{\%}$) grows more greatly in laminar-like regions compared with that under the low background turbulence ($Tu=0.5{\%}$) in laminar regions. The former, however, does not greatly change the original turbulence level in the very near-wall region while the latter does it. At further downstream, the former interacts vigorously with high environmental turbulence inside the pre-existing transitional boundary layer and gradually lose his identification, whereas the latter keep growing in the laminar boundary layer. The calmed region is more clearly observed under the lower free-stream turbulence level and for the receding wakes. The calmed region delays the breakdown further downstream and stabilizes more the boundary layer.

  • This study presents numerical simulations of submerged jump and washed-out jump resulted from the flow over the embankment type weir. Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations are solved with the k-𝜔 SST turbulence model. Validations are carried out using the experimental results in the literature, revealing that computed roller shape, free surface, and mean velocity are in good agreement with measured data. The volume fractions of water of the submerged jump and washed-out jump are compared, and the characteristics of the two flows from the double-averaged volume fractions of water are presented. The condition under which the transition occurs from the submerged jump to washed-out jump is presented by the relation between the relative embankment length and submergence factor via numerical simulations by changing the weir length, discharge, and tailwater depth.

  • Despite of the laminar-turbulent transition region co-exist with fully turbulence region around the leading edge of an airfoil, still lots of researchers apply to fully turbulence models to predict aerodynamic characteristics. It is well known that fully turbulent model such as standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model couldn't predict the complex stall and the separation behavior on an airfoil accurately, it usually leads to over prediction of the aerodynamic characteristics such as lift and drag forces. So, we apply correlation based transition model to predict aerodynamic performance of the NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) Phase IV wind turbine. And also, compare the computed results from transition model with experimental measurement and fully turbulence results. Results are presented for a range of wind speed, for a NREL Phase IV wind turbine rotor. Low speed shaft torque, power, root bending moment, aerodynamic coefficients of 2D airfoil and several flow field figures results included in this study. As a result, the low speed shaft torque predicted by transitional turbulence model is very good agree with the experimental measurement in whole operating conditions but fully turbulent model(k-${\varepsilon}$) over predict the shaft torque after 7m/s. Root bending moment is also good agreement between the prediction and experiments for most of the operating conditions, especially with the transition model.

  • Transitional flow in an obstructed channel is investigated using numerical simulation. Two-dimensional thin obstacles are mounted symmetrically in the vertical direction and periodically in the streamwise direction. Flow separation occurs at the tip of the sharp obstacles. Depending on the Reynolds number, the flow undergoes Hopf bifurcation as the primary instability leading to a two-dimensional unsteady periodic solution. At higher Reynolds numbers, the unsteady solution exhibits a symmetry-breaking bifurcation which results in an unsteady asymmetric solution. The results are compared with experiments currently available, and show a good agreement.

  • Secondary instability in an obstructed channel is investigated using direct numerical simulation. Flow geometry under consideration is a plane channel with two-dimensional thin obstacles mounted symmetrically in the vertical direction and periodically in the streamwise direction. Flow separation occurs at the tip of the sharp obstacles. As a basic flow, we consider an unsteady periodic solution which results from Hopf bifurcation. Depending on the Reynolds number, the basic flow becomes unstable to three-dimensional disturbances, which results in a chaotic flow. Numerical results obtained are consistent with experimental findings currently available.
