The purpose of this article was to not only review historically the growth and development of dancesport, to but also seek to inform the value and prospect of dancesport in Korea. To achieve the purpose of the paper, the result of this article was framed into four time periods for a historical review of Korean dancesport growth and development: the late 1880s - the mid 1940s, the late 1940s - the late 1980s, 1990s and 2000s onwards. First, the first period was from the late 1880s to the mid 1940s when the nation accepted a social dance and western dance and tradition especially in upper-class Korean society. Second, the second period was from the late 1940s to the late 1980s when social dances (or ballroom dance) were suppressed under the military-based regime. The most likely explanation for this was a tradition that Korea society consider distinction between the sexes as a virtue. Third, third period was the 1990s when the social dance (ballroom dance) was developed officially into dancesport. Actually, the 1990s saw the sport built up a positive image while a negative image was portrayed by the military-based government. Fourth, the fourth period was the 2000s onwards when the sport has been developed as a sport and culture in a sound and systematic manner. Indeed, the sport has come to meet the public tastes.
During the study of the distribution of cellular slime molds in Halla mountain of Korea, a new yellow-pigmented Dictyostelium was isloated. This exibited several distinctive features which differed from the published species, and was designated as a new species, Dictyostelium jlavidum sp. n. Hong et Chang (Type strain HL-1). It was cultivated at $20-22^{\circ}C$ on weak nutrient agar media, 0.1 L-P in association with Escherichia coli. Sorocarps were 4-10 mm or more in length, conspicuously yellow throughout or with sori, typically solitary, unbranched or sparsely and irregularly branched. Sorophores were strongly tapered from bases to tips. Bases were typically well-formed disks in form or conically expanded. Sori were yellow to yellowish in color, and the pigmentation intensified with age. Spores were long and thin elliptical, mostly $4.8-9.6{\times}1.9-3.8\;(ave.\;7.3{\times}2.8)\;\mu\textrm{m}$, L/B index about 2.4-2.8, without polar granules.anules.
Sarcocystis grueneri-like sarcocysts were found from the cardiac muscles of a rearing red deer (Cervus elaphus) carcass in Korea. In the light microscopical examination of sarcocysts, they were oval to spherical cysts and 90-170$\times$110-380 ${\mu}m$ in size. However, there was no inflammation and myofiber degeneration. In the transmission electron microscope, these cysts were located within the sarcoplasm of the host cell and filled with merozoites. The sarcocysts were enclosed by a very thin wall (0.45-0.6 ${\mu}m$ thick) that consists of protrusions and ground substance. The primary cyst wall formed numerous strip-like protrusions which were 0.2-0.3 ${\mu}m$ wide and up to 4.2 ${\mu}m$ long. The protrusions were running in parallel with the surface of the cyst. A characteristic of the cyst wall was absent of fibrils inside the protrusions. Merozoites in the compartment measured about $15\times4\;{\mu}m$. The merozoite consisted of four regions: micronemes and rhoptries, amylopectin granule, nucleus, and amylopectin granules. The number of rhoptry was counted in 7-13.
The distributions and relative frequencies of the serotonin-immunoreactive cells were studied in dorsal, ventral, third and splenic lobes of developing chicken pancreas during embryonic periods (10 days of incubation to hatching) by immunohistochemical methods. The regions of pancreas were subdivided into three regions, exocrine, light and dark islets. Round and/or oval shaped serotonin-immunoreactive cells were detected in all four lobes. According to developmental stages, the types of lobes and the regions of pancreas, these immunoreactive cells were showed various distributions and relative frequencies. In exocrine portions, serotonin-immunoreactive cells were found in the splenic lobes at 13-14 days of incubation, in the third lobes from 10 days to 19 days of incubation, in the ventral lobes from 10 days of incubation to hatching and in the dorsal lobes from 11 days of incubation to hatching. In pancreatic islets, these cells were detected only in the dark islets of splenic lobes at 15 and 16 day of incubation with rare frequency. In conclusion, serotonin-immunoreactive cells decreased with developmental stages in all four lobes and their relative frequencies decreased with developmental stages.
The regional distributions and relative frequencies of endocrine cells were studied histochemically (Grimelius and Masson-Hamperl (M-H) silver methods) in the alimentary tract of the red-eared slider, Trachemys scripta elegans. Samples were taken from the esophagus, fundus, pylorus, duodenum, jejunum, ileum and large intestine. Argyrophil (Grimelius-positive) cells and argentaffin (M-H-positive) cells were found in the whole alimentary tract in this study. Spherical to spindle and/or oval to round-shaped argyrophil or argentaffin cells were located in the gastric glands of the stomach regions, in the basal portion of the epithelium of intestinal tract or the esophagus with variable frequencies. Argentaffin cells were more numerously detected in the whole alimentary tract compared with those of argyrophil cells in this study. Argyrophil cells were observed in the whole alimentary tract including the esophagus and the most predominant region was the rectum with moderate frequency. The relative frequency of these cells was rare in the esophagus, fundus, duodenum, jejunum and ileum, respectively and a few frequency in the pylorus. Argentaffin cells were also observed in the whole alimentary tract including the esophagus and the most numerously demonstrated region was the rectum with numerous frequency. They were observed with a few frequencies in the remaining regions of the alimentary tract except for the rectum, respectively. However, to know the exact type of the argyrophil cells and argentaffin cells that were observed in this study, more developmental methods such as immunohistochemistry were needed.
In this study, Copper Azole (CuAz), a domestically available wood preservative for pressure treatment, was employed to perform an experimental research on its infiltration and decay properties in Japanese Red Pine. Test specimens were pressure-injected with CuAz-2 preservative to measure its preservative effectiveness, and then its impact on weight and mass losses. Furthermore, wood specimens were treated with CuAz-2 preservatives of various concentration levels before they were decayed with brown-rot-fungi in order to observe decay properties on light microscope (LM) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). As a result, untreated specimen by Fomitopsis palustris showed the mass loss of more than 40%, and the value of preservative effectiveness of CuAz-2 by indoor decay was $1,73-3.32kg/m^3$. The concentration levels of CuAz-2 preservative were shown to cause significant variations in terms of decay progresses in the cross section, radial section, and tangential section. By contrast, untreated specimens had underwent serious decays in early wood, late wood, longitudinal resin canals, and ray, which led to vertical destruction of wood texture. As for the radial section, ray tracheid, ray parenchyma cell, and window like pits were decayed and destroyed. In the case of tangential section, uniseriate rays and vertical resin canals were seriously decayed. In conclusion, this study indicates that the adequacy of the current CuAz injection amount should be reviewed in the domestic environment because there are significantly different decays at different decay conditions.
Photosynthetic purple nonsulfur bacterial strains were isolated from the sediments collected from rice paddy fields and sludges of wastewater treatment plant, and their plant growth promoting capabilities were examined. Most well known phytohormones, auxin such as indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) and 5'-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) were detected by HPLC in the culture broth of these isolates. Among the isolated bacteria, Rhodopseudomonas faecalis D15 showed the highest production rate of 769.8 ${\mu}g$/mg protein of IAA, 1323 ${\mu}g$/mg protein of IBA and 7.4 mM/mg protein of ALA in the modified Biebl and Pfennig's medium. R. faecalis C9 showed the highest production rate of 20.82 ${\mu}g$/mg protein of gibberellin. In consequence, the root length and dry weight of the germinated tomato seedling treated with R. faecalis isolates were longer and heavier than those of uninoculated control after 15 days of incubation in the soil. Especially, the dry weight of germinated tomato seedling increased by 119.4% in C9-treated samples after 15 days. These purple nonsulfur bacteria may be utilized as environment-friendly biofertilizer in the agriculture.
The freeze dried young antler residue was extracted by proteases and hydrochloric acid(HCl). The young antler was extracted by water at 50$^{\circ}C$ and the residue was reacted by proteases for 5 hours at 50$^{\circ}C$. The extraction rate of its residue was 32.8%(absorbance 3.61 at 280nm) of bacteria protease, 23.8%(absorbance 0.69) of papain, and 31.2% (absorbance 2.96) of pepsin. The young antler was extracted by boiling water and the residue was reacted by proteases for 5 hours at 50$^{\circ}C$. The extraction rate of its residue was 45.0%(absorbance 3.61) of bacteria protease, 30.4%(absorbance 0.33) of papain, and 51.2% (absorbance 2.77) of pepsin. The result of HPLC analysis reveals that in 50$^{\circ}C$ water extract and boiling water extract, all high molecular peak was reduced under MW 1,000 by proteases. The result from the extract of young antler residue reacted by HCl for 5 hours at 50$^{\circ}C$ shows that its extraction rate was 45% (absorbance 0.78) in concentration of 0.1N HCl, 61% (absorbance 1.82) in 0.2N, 81% (absorbance 2.29) in 0.4N, and 82.0% (absorbance 3.28) in 2.0N. The result of HPLC analysis also reveals that in the extract by 0.8N HCl, the peak of about MW 70,000 accounted for 78% in total. Protein content of the extract by 0.8N HCl was 8.2%, and content of amino acid was 81.6%, ash was 1.3%, and mineral contents were 0.1 % of Ca, 2.3% of P, 0.8 % of Mg, 3.4% of Na, 0.002% of F by dry base.
Water-vapor transmission rate and water-vapor permeability of carrageenan-based edible film with three different thicknesses of 0.05, 0.08 and 0.11 mm were measured to investigate the potential applicability of the films to powder foods at five different temperatures (20, 25, 30. 35 and $4^{\circ}C$) and three different relative humidities (50. 70 and 90% RH). Water-vapor transmission rate of the carrageenan-based film was gound to be 2.3 times higher than that of polyethylene (PE) film and water-vapor permeability of the film was 45-230 times higher than that of PE film. Water-ydpor permeability of the film seemed to increase linearly with the film thicknees like other hydrophilic edible films. Water-vapor transmission rate were found to be dependent on the temperature. Activation energies of the water-vapor transmission rate of the film were found to be between 7.898 and 12.8702 kj/mol depending on the film thickness. The water-vapor transmission rate of the film showed the typical kinetic compensation effect between activation energies and preexponential factors. which was proved by the linear increase in the value of logarithms of preecponential factor.
Several single or mixed water-miscible organic solvent systems were investigated to develop the most effective solvent system for enzymatic synthesis of N-benzoylaspartame(BzAPM). The BzAPM was prepared by immobilized thermolysin with using N-benzoyl-L-aspartic acid(Bz-Asp) and L-phenylalanine methyl ester(PheOMe). The solubilities of BzAPM and L-phenylalanine were highest in 4.5% methanol(1.89 and 1.79%, respectively) among the solvents system investigated while a mixed solvent system of 25% dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO) and 20% polyethylene glycol(PEG) 200 showed relatively high values. The synthetic activity of BzAPM as well as initial reaction rate were found to be high in 45% methanol, 45% DMSO and a mixed solvent of 25% DMSO and 20% PEM 200. The imobilized thermolysin was most stable in 25% DMSO and 20% PEG 200 during storage at $40^{\circ}C$ for 42 days. PheOMe in the same solvent system was also found fairly stable against non-enzymatic decomposition at $40^{\circ}C$. Based on the synthetic efficiency and stability, the solvent system containing 25% DMSO and 20% PEG 200 was selected to be appropriate for the enzymatic synthesis of BzAPM.
