  • The large uprush could be occurred when the waves hit the coastal structure and this uprush by wave could make the overtopping. The downfall of the wave overtopping water over the structure brought about the vertical impact loads. The vertical impact loads should be evaluated in order to design the pavement behind the crown wall however these loads were still unclear. In this study, the hydraulic model tests for the downfall impact loads by wave overtopping were performed and the various conditions were applied to the tests. The effect of the incident wave condition, the freeboard, the armour crest height and the height of the parapet were investigated. The test results showed that the parapet on the crown wall could reduce the wave overtopping however the inclusion of parapet could lead to the increased downfall wave pressures behind the crown wall. The empirical formulae were proposed for evaluating the maximum downfall pressures behind the crown wall of rubble mound structure.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify children's mental models of the free-fall objects. This study examined children's prediction and observation about the free-fall of objects. The experimental procedure involved conducting interviews with first-, third-, fifth-, and seventh grade students. The interview had three phases: Prediction, explanation, and observation. During the prediction phase, the object pairs which varied on the dimensions of size, weight, shape, color were presented to students. The students were asked to predict what would happen if the objects were dropped simultaneously. During the explanation phase, the students were asked to explain how they arrived at their answers. During the observation phase, the students observed the free-fall of the object pairs and were asked to describe what they saw. The results showed as follows. (1) Fifth-and seventh grade students made more correct predictions than first- and third grade students. (2) The conflict problems, object pairs involving the dimensions of size and weight, were the most difficult for students to accurately predict. (3) With regard to observations, there was a non-significant effect of grade, indicating equivalence in the number of correct observations made by first-, third-, fifth-, and seventh graders. (4) The conflict problems were the most difficult for students to correctly observe. (5) First- and third grade students showed a significant difference between prediction and observation about the free-fall of objects. However. no difference was found in the fifth- and seventh grade students.

  • The CA (Control Assembly) of an SFR has a CRA(Control Rod Assembly) with an inner duct and control rod. During an emergency situation, the CRA falls into the duct of the CA for a rapid shut-down. The drop time and impact velocity of the CRA are important parameters with respect to the reactivity insertion time and the structural integrity of the CRA. The objective of this study was to investigate the dynamic behavior and integrity of the CRA owing to a drop impact. The impact analysis of the CRA under normal/abnormal drop conditions was carried out using the commercial FEM code LS-DYNA. Results of the drop impact analysis demonstrated that the CRA maintained structural integrity, and could be safely inserted into the flow hole of the damper under abnormal conditions.

  • In this paper dynamic deformation of lower hinge of refrigerator is simulated using dynamic finite element analysis while refrigerator is being dropped. The flow stress curves considering velocity dependency of hinge and lower packing material are determined through bending test and compression test at several dropping speeds. The determined material properties and flow stress from reverse engineering were used as input data for refrigerator's drop test using a dynamic finite element analysis software LS-DYNA. Additionally the result between CAE and 3D deformation measurement from real refrigerator drop test are compared and the result shows that the proposed analysis model is very useful to design lower hinge and lower packing endurable to the impulsive drop impact.

  • This paper considers the trajectory and impact point dispersion analysis of the test launch vehicle (TLV). The analysis, which performed before and after its flight test on November 28, 2018, is described and verified by comparing with the flight test results. The six degree-offreedom (DOF) simulation is used to compute the dispersion of the trajectory, attitude, and impact point, where the launch vehicle performance variations and wind effects during the atmospheric phase are included. The impact area to guarantee the flight safety is determined using the results of the dispersion analysis. The flight test results confirm that the safe flight of TLV is performed within the predicted dispersion boundary.

  • Construction industry is one of the most dangerous industry. As the construction accidents occur due to the repeated factors found in each accidents, there is a limitation in analyzing all types of occupational accidents by the existing descriptive analysis and statistical test. In this study, we classified safety accidents caused by falling objects among the accident types occurring at construction sites into fatal and nonfatal accidents and deduced the factors. In addition, we deduced the association rules among the safety accidents factors caused by falling objects through the association rule analysis method among the machine learning techniques. Therefore, considering the association rules for fatal and nonfatal accidents proposed in this study, it would be possible to prevent accidents by searching for countermeasures against safety accidents caused by falling objects.
