  • We investigated the Reynolds number effects on the flow over a twisted offshore structure in the range of 3×103≤ Re ≤ 1 × 104. To analyze the effect of the twisted surface treatment, a large eddy simulation (LES) with a dynamic subgrid model was employed. A simulation of the cylindrical structure was also carried out to compare the results with those of the twisted offshore structure. As Re increased, the mean drag and lift coefficient of the twisted offshore structure increased with the same tendency as those of the cylindrical structure. However, the increases in the mean drag and lift coefficient of the twisted offshore structure were much smaller than those of the cylindrical structure. Furthermore, elongated shear layer and suppressed vortex shedding from the twisted offshore structure occurred compared to those of the cylindrical cylinder, resulting in a drag reduction and suppression of the vortex-induced vibration (VIV). In particular, the twisted offshore structure achieved a significant reduction of over 96% in VIV compared with that of the cylindrical structure, regardless of increasing Re. As a result, we concluded that the twisted offshore structure effectively controlled the flow structures with reductions in the drag and VIV compared with the cylindrical structure, irrespective of increasing Re.

  • In this paper, using the globular structure designed and implemented for the transmitter and the receiver resonant wireless power transfer(WPT). The coil of the transmitter was proposed to emit a magnetic energy in three-dimensional space by winding a ball shape. Each side of the transmitter has been designed to obtain a high Q value by a spiral structure. This solves the problem that the transfer efficiency decreases rapidly depending on the location in the conventional WPT. The resonance frequency is used 6.78 MHz and the distance between the trasnitter and the receiver is 200 mm. The transfer efficiency of the proposed WPT system is higher than 40% at all direction.

  • The crystal structure of alicylaldehyde-4-piperidinothiosemicarbazone, $C_{13}H_{l7}N_3OS$, has been determined by single crystal X-ray analysis. The crystals are orthorhombic, space group $P2_12_12_1$, with unit cell dimensions a = 6.52(2), b = 13.42(4), c = 14.92(4)${\AA}$. There are four formular units in a unit cell. The structure was solved by the heavy atom method and refined by isotropic block diagonal least-squares methods to a final R value of 0.10 for 1019 observed reflections. The oxygen atom of the hydroxyl group is involved in two hydrogen bonds, one as donor in the intramolecular O-H${\cdots}$N hydrogen bond and the other as acceptor in the intermolecular N-H${\cdots}$O hydrogen bond, the distances of the hydrogen bonds 2.56 and 3.00${\AA}$ respectively. The molecules are joined into infinite columns by the N-H${\cdots}o$O hydrogen bonds which form spirals along the two fold screw axis parallel to the a axis. The molecular columns are held together by van der Waals forces.

  • In this paper, a new composite electromagnetic bandgap(EBG) structure using magnetic materials is proposed for simultaneous switching noise(SSN) suppression in the high-speed digital circuits. The proposed EBG structure has periodic unit cells of square-patches connected by spiral-shaped bridges. The magnetic materials are located on the unit cells of spiral-shaped EBG. The real part of the permeability shifts bandgap to the lower frequency region due to the increased effective inductance. The imaginary part of the permeability has magnetic loss that decreases parasitic LC resonance peaks from between the unit cells. As a result, the proposed structure has the lower cut-off frequency compared with conventional EBG structure and -30 dB SSN suppression bandwidth from 175 MHz to 7.7 GHz. The proposed structure is expected to improve the power integrity and reduce the size of the EBG power plane.

  • An efficient wave energy converter with new overtopping flow device on which spiral reefs are attached is proposed by Maritime and Ocean Engineering Research Institute in Korea and its candidate substructures such as monopile, tripod and jacket are designed. This study investigates modal characteristics of the substructures by analyzing natural frequencies and mode shapes. Based on the modal analysis results, relative strength, governing modes and some complementary design strategies of each candidate substructure are compared and discussed considering water depth conditions.

  • In this study, load transfer tests based on KCI-PS101 were conducted to verify the performance of spiral anchorage zone reinforcement for banded post-tensioning (PT) monostrands. With results, the compressive strength of spiral reinforcement was increased by about 20% than that of specimens with two horizontal steel bars and 8% than that of U-shaped bars. Advanced spiral reinforcement for corner increases compressive strength and can resist the spalling forces or fall-out effect at the corner by shear. The ratio of maximum load to amount of steel of the spiral reinforcement is about twice than that of U-shaped reinforcement. With increase of compressive strength capacity and improvement of constructability, the spiral reinforcement is considered to have advantages of promoting the performance of PT anchorage zone compared to conventional methods.

  • Ultrastructure of the zona radiata and the micropyle of ripe eggs in the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), catfish (Silurus asotus) and loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) were examined by light, scanning and transmission microscopes. The egg micropyle of rainbow trout and catfish consists of a funnel-shaped vestibule and a tapered canal transversing the zona radiata. The micropyle of rainbow trout and catfish showed the similar structure with flat pit and long canal. The micropylar wall showed the clockwise spiral structure in rainbow trout. The micropyle of the loach showed the type with a hollow pit leading into a short canal and the micropylar wall showed the counterclockwise spiral structure. There are numerous and various size pores at the surface area around the opening in every experimented fish. Interconnecting ridges were observed in the unfertilized eggs of every fish.

  • The purpose of the present study is to explore the effects of local reinforced type and to suggest reliable failure mechanism and the design criteria on the anchorage zones of the precast prestressed concrete bridges. To accomplish these objectives, a comprehensive experimental and analytical study has been conducted. From this study, the cracking and ultimate load capacities for spirally reinforced anchorage zone are found to be larger than those for orthogonal reinforced anchorage zone. This indicate the effectiveness of spiral reinforcement in controlling the cracking. And realistic failure mechanism and design criteria of prestressed anchorage zones based on the present study are suggested.

  • In this paper, vortical integrated transformers using bondwires are proposed and characterized for MMIC's (Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuits) In a wide range of frequencies (1∼20 GHz), where full-wave analysis by the FEM (Finite Element Method) was adopted. The electrical characteristics of the proposed transformers are compared with those of the spiral transformer. We extracted mutual inductances from S -parameters. The vertical transformers using bondwires have not only low insertion loss but also reduce parasitic capacitances and dielectric loss due to their separation from substrates. It can be fabricated easily by used of the modern automatic wirebonding technology. It is expected that the proposed transformers are to improve the performance of MMIC's applied to impedance matching, and phase shifting circuits.
