  • The present study numerically investigated the influence of the waveform distribution on the tsunami-vegetation interaction using a non-reflected wave generation system for various tsunami waveforms in a two-dimensional numerical wave tank. First, it was possible to determine the wave attenuation mechanism due to the tsunami-vegetation interaction from the spatial waveform, flow field, vorticity field, and wave height distribution. The combination of fluid resistance in the vegetation and a large gap and creates a vortex according to the flow velocity difference in and out of the vegetation zone. Thus, the energy of a tsunami was increasingly reduced, resulting in a gradual reduction in wave height. Compared to existing approximation theories, the double volumetric ratio of the waveform increased the reflection coefficient of the tsunami-vegetation interaction by 34%, while decreasing the transfer coefficient and energy attenuation coefficient by 25% and 13%, respectively. Therefore, the hydraulic characteristics of a tsunami is highly likely to be underestimated if the solitary wave of the approximation theory is applied for the tsunami.

  • Fluid simulation for computer graphics is a field of generating the realistic movements of water, smoke, fire, explosion, sand and related phenomena to be used in motion pictures and video games. In this paper we review the fluid simulation technologies and present a trend analysis for the simulation methods used in the recent movies. First of all, for this purpose, the two methods that are most widely used for fluid simulation are explained as well as their technical issues. These two methods are classified into Eulerian grid-based and Lagrangian particle-based approaches. Next, focusing on the achievements of the scientists and engineers that the 2008 Sci-Tech Oscar Awards are given to, the features of their fluid simulation technologies are analyzed. Finally, we anticipate that there are and will be the needs for visualizing fluid interaction with rigid and soft bodies and topological change among solid, fluid and gas, creating digital creatures based on fluid simulation and presenting interaction between creature and fluid.

  • Turbo blowers are mainly used in refuse collection systems. We discuss blower performance in relation to the angle of the inlet vane installed at the upstream of the blower. The flow characteristics of the components are analyzed by three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis and compared to experimental results. A two-stage serially connected turbo blower is introduced to analyze the performance experimentally. Throughout the experimental measurements and the numerical simulation, the distorted inlet velocity generated in the small vane angle reduces the performance of the blower, because of the local leading-edge separation and the resulting non-uniform blade loading. We also perform a detailed flow analysis using the results obtained in the numerical simulation.

  • In this study, we conducted computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations for the unsteady hydrodynamic interaction of multiple thrusters by solving Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations. A commercial CFD software, STAR-CCM+ was used for all simulations by employing a ducted thruster model with combination of a propeller and No. 19a duct. A sliding mesh technique was used to treat dynamic motion of propeller rotation and non-conformal hexahedral grid system was considered. Four different combinations in tilting and azimuth angles of the thrusters were considered to investigate the effects on the propulsion performance. We could find that thruster-hull and thruster-thruster interactions has significant effect on propulsion performance and further study will be required for the optimal configurations with the best tilting and relative azimuth angle between thrusters.

  • Exter ballistics of a typical high-speed projectile is studied through a flow-visualization experiment and an unstructured grid Navier-Srokes computation. Experiment produced a schlieren photograph that adequately shows the characteristic features of this complex flow, namely two kinds of oblique cone shocks and turbulent wake developing into the downstream. A hybrid scheme of finite volume-element method is used to simulate the compressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stok- es solution on unstructured grids. Osher's approximate Riemann solver is used to discretize the cinvection term. Higher-order spatial accuracy is obtained by MUSCL extension and van Albada ty- pe flux limiter is used to stabilize the numerical oscillation near the solution discontinuity. Accurate Gakerkin method is used to discretize the viscous term. Explict fourth-order Runge-Kutta method is used for the time-stepping, which simplifies the application of MUSCL extension. A two-layer k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model is used to simulate the turbulent wakes accurately. Axisymmetric folw and two-dimensional flow with an angle of attack have been computed. Grid-dependency is also checked by carrying out the computation with doubled meshes. 2-D calculation shows that effect of angle of attack on the flow field is negligible. Axi-symmetric results of the computation agrees well with the flow visualization. Primary oblique shock is represented within 2-3 meshes in numerical results, and the varicose mode of the vortex shedding is clearly captured in the turbulent wake region.

  • This In this paper, we describe the performance characteristics of a turbo blower as a function of the shape of the volute casing: expansion diameter and width of the volute casing. The turbo blower considered in the present study is mainly used in a refuse collection system. The flow characteristics inside the turbo blower were analyzed by a three-dimensional Navier-Stokes solver and compared with experimental results. The distributions of pressure and efficiency obtained by numerical simulation were in good agreement with those determined experimentally. Throughout the numerical simulation of the turbo blower, the blower performance was enhanced by decreasing the local losses in the blade passage and the outlet flow. The efficiency and pressure for the design flow condition were enhanced by about 3% and 2%, respectively, compared to the efficiency and pressure of the reference blower. Detailed flow analysis was performed using the results of the numerical simulation

  • This paper describes the design optimization of a rotating rectangular channel with staggered arrays of pin-fins by Kriging metamodeling technique. Two non-dimensional variables, the ratio of the height to the diameter of the pin-fins and the ratio of the spacing between the pin-fins to the diameter of the pin-fins are chosen as the design variables. The objective function that is a linear combination of heat transfer and friction loss related terms with a weighting factor is selected for the optimization. To construct the Kriging model, objective function values at 20 training points generated by Latin hypercube sampling are evaluated by a three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) analysis method with the SST turbulence model. The Kriging model predicts the objective function value that agrees well with the value calculated by the RANS analysis at the optimum point. The objective function is reduced by 11% by the optimization of the channel.

  • Analysis of the aerodynamic performance of a bobsleigh has been performed for various types of bobsleigh body shape. To analyze the aerodynamic performance of the bobsleigh, three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stoke equations were used with the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model as a turbulence closure. Grid structure was composed of unstructured tetrahedral grids. The radii of curvature of cowling, and height and length of front bumper at the tip on the drag coefficient were selected as geometric parameters. And, the effects of these parameters on the aerodynamic performance, i.e., the drag coefficient, were evaluated. The results shows that the aerodynamic performance is significantly affected by the height of front bumper and radius of curvature.

  • A preconditioned Navier-Stokes code was parallelized by the domain decomposition technique, and the accuracy of the parallelized code was verified through a comparison with the result of a sequential code and experimental data. Parallel performance of the code was examined on a Myrinet based PC-cluster and a Fast-Ethernet system. Speed-up ratio was examined as a major performance parameter depending on the number of processor and the network communication topology. In this test, Myrinet system shows a superior parallel performance to the Fast-Ethernet system as was expected. A test for the dependency on problem size also shows that network communication speed in a crucial factor for parallel performance, and the Myrinet based PC-cluster is a plausible candidate for high performance parallel computing system.

  • In rivers and streams, biofilms are thin layers of greenish-brown slime attached to rocks, plants, and other surfaces. Biofilms play key roles in primary production and cycling of nutrients, water quality remediation, suspended sediment removal, and energy flow to higher trophic levels. In the present study, we developed a two-dimensional cellular automata model to simulate mixed biofilms of toxin-sensitive and toxin-producing species in hydrodynamic flow. The flow was generated by a stochastic process for uniform flow and by using the Navier-Stokes equation for non-uniform flow. Minimized local rules governing reproduction and mortality of the species were executed in the self-organizing processes to elucidate interactions between toxin-producing and toxin-sensitive species in competition over nutrients. We briefly discuss the morphology of the simulated biofilm under different flow conditions.
