  • Objectives: This case study aimed to evaluate changes in periodontal pathogens and systemic disease indicators following the adjunctive use of probiotics for periodontal treatment. Methods: Two adults, a 64-year-old male and 71-year-old female, were selected with ethical approval and underwent comprehensive oral and systemic health assessments before and after probiotic intake with periodontal debridement. Results: There was a significant reduction in the periodontal pathogens, particularly Porphyromonas gingivalis and Treponema forsythia, and no adverse systemic indicators were observed. Moreover, a trend toward improved lipid profiles was noted, suggesting a potential positive impact on systemic health. Conclusions: This study shows the potential role of probiotics in enhancing oral health and preventing systemic diseases, thus highlighting the need for further research and clinical trials.

  • Bacterial canker of sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) was observed in farmers\' orchards in Goesan, Chungbuk in 2003. Typical canker symptoms occurred on the branches or twigs of sweet cherry in early spring and bacterial exudates oozed out of the cracked barks of diseased trees. Watersoaked brown symptoms appeared on the leaves and severe infection caused thorough defoliation on the branches or twigs of sweet cherry. When severely infected branches or twigs were cut, irregular and rusty-colored symptoms in sapwood and heartwood were clearly found, indicating that they can serve as specific symptoms of bacterial canker of sweet cherry. The causal bacterium responsible for the symptoms was isolated purely from the infected sapwood of sweet cherry. Based on its morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics, the causal bacterium was identified as Pseudomonas syringae pv. morsprunorum. The bacterium was pathogenic on sweet cherry and Japanese apricot, but not on peach, cherry, and kiwifruit. It is proposed that the disease be named as bacterial canker of sweet cherry.

  • In December of 2016, 'The Forest Protection Act' was amended partly in The National Assembly and the socalled 'Tree Doctor Act' was promulgated. Tree Doctor Act will be enforced from June 28, 2018. Under the new Act, none other than 'Tree Hospital' can do disease and pest management work for trees in public living space. The only exclusive qualification for tree hospital is a 'Tree Doctor', the government registered license which is newly established by the Act. To become a tree doctor, he/she must complete the tree doctor training courses in the designated 'Tree Doctor Academy' and pass the qualification test. Currently, Korea Forest Service is drafting the enforcement ordinances and regulations for the implement of Tree Doctor Act. When taking into consideration that the most fundamental and important discipline of the plant and tree health care is the plant pathology, and that the tree health care is a promising business for young plant pathology people, Korean Society of Plant Pathology is ought to be actively involved in the preparation of the enforcement ordinances and regulations, and help the early establishment of the new tree health care system in living spaces of Korea.

  • This study aimed to investigate the association of lifestyle with the copy number of periodontal pathogens. This retrospective study collected electronic health records of 102 subjects with periodontitis, including reports of bacterial genetic tests and lifestyle questionnaires. The five pathogens were analyzed as follows: Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, Treponema denticola, Prevotella intermedia, and Fusobacterium nucleatum. The lifestyle questionnaire included age, sex, oral hygiene management, smoking, drinking, exercise, dietary, snacks, water intake, and sleeping time. An independent t-test or ANOVA was performed to compare the copy number of periodontal pathogens according to lifestyle (α=0.05). The copy numbers of P. gingivalis and F. nucleatum were significantly higher than those of other strains. The copy number of T. forsythia in patients who exercised was 54% lower than in those who did not (p=0.009). Other lifestyle factors did not affect the number of bacteria. Exercise habits among the lifestyles showed a association with the number of specific oral bacteria. This result suggests that a lifestyle questionnaire is essential in clinical situation and necessary to prevent and treat the periodontal disease effectively.

  • Methanol extracts from 207 samples of 118 plant species in 44 families were tested for their fungicidal activities against six phytopathogenic fungi. Extracts of Thuja orientalis leaf, Cinnamomum loureirii leaf, Lindera erythrocarpa barks and leaf, Pinus koraiensis wood, Hovenia dulcis wood, Koelreuteria paniculata barks, Styrax japonica wood, Camelia japonica leaf and Cleyera japonica leaf showed very strong fungicidal activity against more than two phytopathogenic fungi at a concentration of 2000 ppm. As a naturally occurring fungicide, these plants could be useful as new fungicidal products against various plant diseases induced by plant pathogens.
