  • Poly (ethylene 2, 6-naphthalate) (PEN) has been used for a high performance engineering plastics such as fiber, film, and packaging, because of excellent physical properties and outstanding gas barrier characteristics [1-2]. However, the application of PEN is limited because PEN exhibits a relatively high melt viscosity. Recently, many researches for organic/inorganic composites by applying nano-particles to the polymer matrix have been carried out [3], and the nano-particles exhibited greatly improved mechanical and rheological properties [4]. • Here, we introduce various type of inorganic nanostructure synthesized with functional nanoparticles and silica. From two decades ago, functional inorganic nanoparticles have been synthesized and highlighted, now we moved to next level of wet-chemical synthesis. By integrating functional nanoparticles with silica, we were able to synthesize multi-functional nanostructure, which expand the applications of nanoparticles to catalyst, drug carrier, sensors. In this context, silica has been spotlighted due to its versatility. Silica has highly biocompatible, relatively transparent and stable under harsh conditions. Thus it can be used as good supporter to synthesize complex multi-functional nanostructure when mixed with other functional nanoparticles. A various shape of complex nanostructures have been synthesized including core-shell type, yolk-shell type and janus type etc. In this paper, we have described the purposes of synthesizing silica noncomplex and various case studies for biomedical applications and self-assembly.

  • The characteristics of abrasive wear of the rubber matrix composites filled with nano sized silica particles were investigated at ambient temperature by pin-on-disc friction test. The range of volume fraction of silica particles tested are between 11% to 25%. The cumulative wear volume and friction coefficient of these materials on particle volume fraction were determined experimentally. The major failure mechanisms were lapping layers, deformation of matrix, ploughing, deboding of particles and microcracking by scanning electric microscopy photograph of the tested surface. The cumulative wear volume showed a tendency to increase nonlinear with increase of sliding distance. As increasing the silica particles of these composites indicated higher friction coefficient.

  • In this study, monodispersive silica nanoparticles with double mesoporous shells were synthesized, and the pore size of synthetic mesoporous silica nanoparticles was controlled. Cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC), N, N-dimethylbenzene, and decane were used as soft template and induced to form outer mesoporous shell. The resultant double mesoporous silica nanoparticles were consisted of two layers of shells having different pore sizes, and it has been confirmed that outer shells with larger pores (Mean pore size > 2.5 nm) are formed directly on the surface of the smaller pore sized shell (Mean pore size < 2.5 nm). It was confirmed that the regulation of the molar ratio of pore expansion agents plays a key role in determining the pore size of double mesoporous shells.

  • For application to display module junction process, the silk screen printing based on UV curable acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive(PSA) with silica nano-particles and the rheological properties were studied to investigate the effect on printability and adhesion. The monomers for PSA were based on 2-ethylhexyl acrylate(2-EHA) and acrylic acid(AA) 93:7, butyl acylate(BA), 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate(2-HEA) and tetrahydrofurfuryl acrylate(THFA) were added. Additionally, hydrophobic and hydrophilic nano-particles AEROSIL R974 and AEROSIL 200 were added, respectively. When the ratio of nano-particle was used above 4 or 7 phr, G' and ${\eta}^*$ were increased significantly. When the ratio of AEROSIL 200 was used above 7 phr, the penetration property was decreased during the silk screen printing. We found that the adhesion was decreased with increasing the nano-particle content, and it was decreased in the case of the hydrophilic nano-particle AEROSIL 200.

  • Nanoporous materials with nanometer-sized pores, are of great interest in the various applications such as selective adsorbents, heterogeneous catalysts and catalyst supports because of their high porosity, surface area, and size selective adsorption properties. This study is aimed to prepare nanoporous catalytic materials on the basis of two-dimersional clay by pillaring of $SiO_2$ sol particles. $SiO_2$ Pillared Montmorillonite (Si-PILM) was prepared by ion exchanging the interlayer $Ni^{2+}$ ions of clay with $SiO_2$ nano-sized particles of which the surface was modified with nicked polyhydroxy cations sach as $Ni_4(OH)_4^{4+}$. Nano-sized $SiO_2$ particles were formed by the controlled hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). Upon pillaring of $Ni^+$-modified $SiO_2$ nano particles between the clay layers, the basal spacing was expanded largely to $45{\AA}$ and the extremely large specific surface area ($S_{BET}$) of $760m^2/g$ was obtained.

  • In this study, we propose a method for fabricating hydrophobic coatings/films with three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical nanostructured organic/inorganic composite surfaces. An epoxy-based, large-area 3D ordered nanoporous template is first prepared through an advanced photolithography technique called Proximity-field nanoPatterning (PnP). Then, a hierarchically structured surface is generated by densely impregnating the template with silica nanoparticles with an average diameter of 22 nm through dip coating. Due to the coexisting micro- and nano-scale roughness on the surface, the fabricated composite film exhibits a higher contact angle (>137 degrees) for water droplets compared to the reference samples. Therefore, it is expected that the materials and processes developed through this study can be used in various ways in the traditional coating/film field.

  • Highly c-axis oriented nanocrystalline ZnO thin films on silica glass substrates were prepared by spin coating-pyrolysis process with a zinc naphthenate precursor. Only the XRD intensity peak of (002) phase was observed for all samples. With an increase in heat treatment temperature, the peak intensity of (002) phase increases. No significant aggregation of particle was present. From scanning probe microscopy analyses, three-dimensional grain growth, which was thought to be due to inhomogeneous substrate surface and c-axis oriented grain growth of the ZnO phase, was independent on heal-treatment temperature. Highly homogeneous surface of the highly-oriented ZnO film was observed at $800^{\circ}C$. All the films exhibited a high transmittance (above 80%) in visible region except film heat treated at $1000^{\circ}C$, and showed a sharp fundamental absorption edge at about $0.38{\sim}0.40{\mu}m$. The estimated energy band gap for all the films were within the range previously reported for films and single crystal. ZnO films, consisting of densely packed grains with smooth surface morphology were obtained by heat treatment at $600^{\circ}C{\sim}800^{\circ}C$, expected to be ideal for practical application, such as transparent conductive film and optical device.
