  • The internal short-circuit between cathodes and anodes has been known to be a critical concern for the safety failures of lithium-ion batteries, which is strongly influenced by the thermal stability of separators. In this study, to effectively suppress the internal short-circuit failures, we developed a new composite separator with the improved thermal stability compared to conventional polyolefin-based separators. The composite separators were prepared by introducing a ceramic coating layer ($Al_2O_3$/PVdF-HFP) onto both sides of a polyethylene (PE) separator. The microporous structure of ceramic coating layers is determined by controlling the phase inversion of coating solutions and becomes more developed with the increase of nonsolvent (water) content. This structural change of ceramic coating layers was observed to greatly affect the thermal stability as well as the electrochemical performance of composite separators, which was systematically discussed in terms of phase inversion.

  • Effects of the surface fluorination on the electrochemical charge-discharge properties of $Mg_2$Ni electrode in Ni-MH batteries fabricated by mechanical alloying were investigated. After 20h ball milling, Mg and Ni powder formed nanocrystalline $Mg_2$Ni. Discharge capacity of this alloy increased greatly at first one cycle, but due to the formation of Mg(OH)$_2$ passive layer, it showed a rapid degradation in alkaline solution within 10cyc1es. In case of 6N KOH +xN KF electrolyte (x = 0.5, 1, 2), a continuous and stable fluorinated layer formed by adding excess F$^{[-10]}$ ion, increased durability of $Mg_2$Ni electrode greatly and high rate discharge capability(90-100mAh/g). 2N KF addition led to the highest durability of all tested here. The reason of the improvement is due to thin MgF$_2$, which can prevent the $Mg_2$Ni electrode from forming Mg(OH)$_2$layer that is the main cause of degradation.

  • A chrome absorbent that is useful in rapid magnetic recovery and recycling was developed though a synthesis of Multi-Terminalized Magnetic-core Dendrimer (MTMD). Divergence through coprecipitation and rotation growth was used for synthesis. The dendrimer was multi-terminilized through methyl propionate and glutaric acid. The property analysis of the synthesized sample was performed through XRD, FT-IR, TEM, EDS, TGA and zeta potential analyzer. A magnetic-core of MTMD had a magnetite crystal and the size of 4th generation dendrimer was identified to be from 15 nm to 20 nm. Through the analysis of the TGA, the rate of the dendrimer branch for the first generation dendrimer was about 7% and 3% of diminished weight occurred as the generation grows. Also, the potential of the dendrimer when multi-terminalized, had variation from 25.26 mV to -6.53 mV. As a result of MTMD adsorption experiment, it absorbed more than 80% within 5 minutes and indicated absorptivity of 6.308 mg/g. When it was compared with COOH Dendrimer (COOH-D) after magnetic recovery, the recovery time was rapidly reduced by more than half and it could recover 100% within 30 minutes. In case of the regeneration experiment that used chrome, it was identified to maintain the same adsorptivity for four runs.

  • In this work, carbon fibers were electrolessly Ni-plated in order to investigate the effect of metal plating on the electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (EMI-SE) of Ni-coated carbon fibers-reinforced epoxy matrix composites. The surfaces of carbon fibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Electric resistance of the composites was tested using a 4-point-probe electric resistivity tester. The EMI-SE of the composites was evaluated by means of the reflection and adsorption methods. From the results, it was found that the EMI-SE of the composites enhanced with increasing Ni plating time and content. In high frequency region, the EMI-SE didn't show further increasing with high Ni content (Ni-CF 10 min) compared to the Ni-CF 5 min sample. In conclusion, Ni content on the carbon fibers can be a key factor to determine the EMI-SE of the composites, but there can be an optimized metal content at a specific electromagnetic frequency region in this system.

  • Lithium metal has garnered attention as a promising anode active material thanks to its high specific capacity, energy density, and the lowest reduction potential. However, the formation of dendrites, dendritic crystals that arise during the charge and discharge process, has posed safety and lifetime stability challenges. To resolve this, our study has introduced a novel separator design. This separator features a composite coating of vapor-grown carbon fiber, a conductive material in nanofibers, and silver. We have meticulously studied the impact of this innovative separator on the electrochemical properties of the lithium metal anode, unveiling promising results. To confirm the synergistic effect of VGCF and Ag, a separator with no surface treatment and a separator with only VGCF coated on one side were prepared and compared with the Ag-VGCF-separator. In the case of the bare separator, the Li metal surface is covered with dendrites during the initial charge and discharge process. In contrast, both the VGCF-separator and the Ag-VGCF-separator show Li precipitation inside the conductive coating layer coated on the separator surface. Additionally, the Ag-VGCF-separator showed a more uniform precipitate shape than the VGCF-separator. As a result, the Ag-VGCF-separators show improved electrochemical properties compared to the bare separators and the VGCF-separators.
