Friction coefficients of the prestressing tendon are the basic information required to control the prestressing force introduced to PSC structure during jacking. However, the friction coefficients show considerable differences depending on the specifications, causing much confusion to designers. In this study, the ranges of the friction coefficients presented in domestic and foreign specifications are compared together to clarify the differences. Then, a procedure is proposed that can be used to estimate the wobble and curvature friction coefficients from field data such as elongation and prestressing force and from theory related to the friction. The procedure is applied to various tendon profiles of several PSC bridges constructed by ILM, FCM and MSS. The resulting values are compared with those presented in some specifications and assumed in jacking and a reasonable range of the friction coefficient is discussed. Lift-off tests are also performed in some bridges to further verify the results. The resulting wobble friction coefficients are not as small as those presented in AASHTO specifications but range from the lower limit to mid point of domestic specifications, while the curvature friction coefficients approach or slightly exceed the upper limit.

This study introduces the CFTA girder(Concrete-Filled and Tied Steel Tubular Arch Girder) which is a combined structural system of traditional CFT, arch, and prestress structures. Static load tests and structural behavior analyses were carried out for a 25m long CFTA girder. In the analysis, each load of 58kN, 88kN, 148kN, 207kN,and 298kN was applied incrementally at the positions of 1.0 m distances in both directions from the center of the girder. On each test, strain and displacement were measured. Linear static FEM analyses using Strand7 code were also performed to check the structural stability and to investigate the effects of prestressing(${\pm}$20%) and material property(Young's modulus) on the displacement and strain. The results of this study are summarized as follows: the initial strain & displacement under selfweight and prestressing were influenced with the variation of prestressing, but they were mainly effected only by Young's modulus when additional loads were applied.
Ground anchor method is one of the most popular reinforcing technology for slope in Korea. For the health monitoring of slope which is reinforced by permanent anchor for a long period, monitoring of the tension force of ground anchor is very important. However, since electromechanical sensors such as strain gauge and V/W type load cell are also subject to long-term risk as well as suffering from noise during long distance transmission and immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI), optical FBG sensors embedded tendon was developed to measure strain of 7-wire strand by embedding FBG sensor into the center king cable of 7-wire strand. This FBG sensors embedded tendon has been successfully applied to measuring the short-term anchor force. But to adopt this tendon to long-term monitoring, temperature compensation of the FBG sensors embedded tendon should be done. In this paper, we described how to compensate the effect in compliance with the change of underground temperature during long-term tension force monitoring of ground anchors by using optical fiber sensors (FBG: Fiber Bragg Grating). The model test was carried out to determine the temperature sensitivity coefficient (${\beta}^{\prime}$) of FBG sensors embedded tendon. The determined temperature sensitivity coefficient ${\beta}^{\prime}=2.0{\times}10^{-5}/^{\circ}C$ was verified by comparing the ground temperatures predicted from the proposed sensor using ${\beta}^{\prime}$ with ground temperatures measured from ground thermometer. Finally, temperature compensations were carried out based on ${\beta}^{\prime}$ value and ground temperature measurement from KMA for the tension force monitoring results of tension type and compression type anchors, which had been installed more than 1 year before at the test site. Temperature compensated tension forces are compared with those measured from conventional load cell during the same measuring time. Test results show that determined temperature sensitivity coefficient (${\beta}^{\prime}$) of FBG sensors embedded tendon is valid and proposed temperature compensation method is also appropriate from the fact that the temperature compensated tension forces are not dependent on the change of ground temperature and are consistent with the tension forces measured from the conventional load cell.
Ground anchor method is one of the most popular reinforcing technology in Korea. For the sound monitoring of slope reinforced by permanent anchor for a long period, monitoring the tension force of ground anchor is very important. However, special technology except conventional load cell has not been developed for this purpose. In this paper, a new method is described to replace the conventional strain gauge and V.W. type load cell which has been commonly used as a prestress force monitoring tool for a short-term and long-term. Four 11.5 m long strain detectable tension type anchors were made using FBG sensor embedded tendon since FBG sensor is smaller than strain gauge type load cell and does not have noise from electromagnetic wave. Each two set strain detectable tension type anchors were installed into the different ground conditions, i.e., soft rock and weathered granite soil. Prestress force of ground anchor was monitored during the loading-unloading step from in-situ pullout test using proposed FBG sensor embedded in the tendon and the conventional load cell Test results show that the prestress force monitored from FBG sensor may well be used practically, for it almost matches with that measured from expensive load cell.

The current test procedure for transfer length, which determine transfer length by measuring concrete strain, has an actual bond stress state in the prestressed pretensioned member : however, it is difficult to determine the bond properties of maximum bond stress and bond stiffness with this method. It is also difficult for design engineer to understand and select a correct safety criterion from the widely distributed results of such a ransfer test alone. An alternative testing procedure is provided here to determine the bond properties without measuring the concrete strain. In this test the bond stress is measured directly by creating a similar boundary condition within the transfer length in a real beam during the transfer of prestressing force. The prestressing force was released step by step by step from the unloading side. The release of force induces a swelling of the strand at the unloading side of concrete block, bonding force in the block, and a bond slip of the strand toward the other side of the block. Two center-hole load cells are used to record the end loads until the point of general bond slip(maximum bond stress). It is suggested that this test procedure be performed with the ordinary transfer test when determining the transfer length in a prestressed, pretensioned concrete beam.

Due to the self-equilibrium status of the cable system, the loss of the tensioning in the cable system results in other cables carrying larger tension forces than those initially calculated by structural engineers. Also, turn-buckle systems, which have been widely used to pre-tension and/or re-tension the cables, are limited to use for small cables and to provide a rough estimation for tension forces. In this study, the re-tensioning cable connection systems were developed to overcome the problems mentioned above. The main objective of the proposed system is to re-tension large cables and measure the exact amount of tension forces of the cable systems. This connection system is also combined with the wireless signal monitoring module so that engineers are able to measure the tension forces any place where the internet is available. This paper presents the development of the re-tensioning cable connection systems and experiment using the real-scale cable systems to verify the fe-tensioning and signal monitoring systems.

In this study, vibrational tendon tension measurement methods are applied to estimate tension of external tendons used in segmental post-tensioned bridges. The acceleration of various length type of tendons is measured and natural frequencies are obtained using FFT (Fast Fourier Transform). The obtained natural frequencies are within 1% error regardless of sensor direction and location. On the basis of natural frequency of tendon, estimation of the tendon tension is performed by using many types of solutions such as string theory equation, multi mode estimation, practical formula estimation and stiff string with clamped-clamped boundary conditions. The results are compared with each other and have shown that the flexural stiffness is not negligible in tendons of this type causing the vibration mode to be inharmonically related. The results have shown that the method using stiff string equation with clamped-clamped boundary conditions is more accurate than the other methods. Application example of in-service bridges has shown that force distribution effects from friction at deviation blocks can be effectively detected.

In this study, the stress characteristics of temporary fixed steel rods were analyzed in the "temporary fixing system using internal prestressing tension", which is mainly applied to the construction of superstructures by FCM. It was difficult to confirm the changes in initial tensile force in this system because the steel rod was internally connected to the pier and the PSC BOX. Therefore, measurement was performed before and after the completion of each segment using an FBG sensor to measure the change in the micro length of the steel rod. The results of the analysis showed that 75% to 90% of the maximum vertical contraction of the steel rod that occurred until the completion of the cantilever segment occurred in the fixing ~ 1segment, and the maximum loss of initial prestressing force was 39%. Such excessive loss of tension force to 1 segment means that tension is needed to improve the precision of construction during the fixation, and re-tension is needed to secure stability for conduction of cantilever segments after the completion of 1segment. In the 2 ~ last segment, the stress of the steel rod decreased gradually, and in the summer, the decrease in stress tended to partially recover due to the increase in the length of the steel rod corresponding to the increase in the vertical volume of PSC BOX. The dominant factor in the stress change in 2~ last segment in this phenomenon is judged to be the change in the length of the steel rod according to the temperature. Unlike the change in length, the relaxation was 1.2-2.7%, which was mostly offset by the opposite stress corresponding to the temperature stress. Therefore, a plan was proposed to improve the internal stress, such as adjusting the fixation time.

It is proposed that the electromechanical relation of the conductive materials with high electrical resistance may be used to estimate the current stress of prestressing tendons. To choose the best conductive material to this end, we studied the electromechanical relations of carbon fibers and metalic heat wires experimentally. The strain of those materials was controlled instead of the stress during the experiment. It is found that the relation of carbon fibers can be modelled by a parabolic(or hyperbolic) function in the early stage of deformation. However because the relation is not consistent when it is unloaded and reload, carbon fibers are not suitable for this purpose. Metallic heat wires show a consistent linear relation during loading and unloading in the elastic deformation and are suitable for this purpose. To estimate the electromechanics relation of metallic wires, we developed a simple formula based on the rigid plasticity. We propose a new kind of prestressing tendons whose stress can be monitored. As a side result of this study, we found that the electromechanical relation of carbon fibers without epoxy matrix becomes almost linear after a certain strain.
