This paper presents development of a geometrically nonlinear triangular planar element including rotational degrees of freedom, based on the co-rotational(CR) formulation. The CR formulation is one of the efficient geometrically nonlinear formulations and it is based on the assumptions on small strain and large rotation. In this paper, modified CR formulation is suggested for the developemnt of a triangular planar element. The present development is validated regarding the static and time transient problems. The present results are compared with the results predicted by the previous researchers and those obtained by the existing commercial software.

For autonomous ships to be commercialized and be able to navigate in coastal water, they must be able to detect maritime obstacles. One of the most common obstacles seen in coastal area are the farm buoys. In this study, a maritime object detection system was developed that detects buoys using the YOLO algorithm and visualizes the distance and bearing between buoys and the ship through geometric interpretation of camera images. After training the maritime object detection model with 1,224 pictures of buoys, the precision of the model was 89.0%, the recall was 95.0%, and the F1-score was 92.0%. Camera calibration had been conducted to calculate the distance and bearing of an object away from the camera using the obtained image coordinates and Experiment A and B were designed to verify the performance of the maritime object detection system. As a result of verifying the performance of the maritime object detection system, it can be seen that the maritime object detection system is superior to radar in its short-distance detection capability, so that it can be used as a navigational aid along with the radar.

A GA-based optimum design algorithm and a program for plane steel frame structures with semi-rigid connections are presented. The algorithm is incorporated with the refined plastic hinge analysis method wherein geometric nonlinearity is considered by using the stability functions of beam-column members, and material nonlinearity, by using the gradual stiffness degradation model that includes the effects of residual stresses, moment redistribution through the occurrence of plastic hinges, semi-rigid connections, and geometric imperfection of members. In the genetic algorithm, the tournament selection method and micro-GAs are employed. The fitness function for the genetic algorithm is expressed as an unconstrained function composed of objective and penalty functions. The objective and penalty functions are expressed as the weight of steel frames and the constraint functions, respectively. In particular, the constraint functions fulfill the requirements of load-carrying capacity, serviceability, ductility, and construction workability. To verify the appropriateness of the present method, the optimal design results of two plane steel frames with rigid and semi-rigid connections are compared.

This paper presents the effects of the tool shape on the geometrical characteristics of flat end-milled side walls. A tool shape is characterized by such parameters as helix angle, number of cutting edges, and diameter. The geometrical characteristics of the side walls are represented by the surface profiles in the feed and axial directions, which are orthogonal to each other. The geometrical defects in each direction are estimated based on the instantaneous apparent cutting areas, which are represented by the interference area between the tool and workpiece and that between the cutting edge and workpiece. It is confirmed that a geometrical defect in the feed direction is formed when the tool leaves the workpiece and the curvature of the tool path changes. Defects in the axial direction are also found in the side walls, except for the defect zone in the feed direction. An up-cut using an end-mill with a steeper helix angle, a greater number of cutting edges, and a smaller diameter are thus found to improve the geometrical accuracy of end-milled side walls.

This article investigates the effects of geometric configuration on the vibro-acoustic characteristics of in-plane vibration of a thick annular disc. Disc thickness and outer radius for a given inner radius are selected as independent variables having reasonable ranges. Variations in structural eigensolutions for radial modes are investigated using pre-developed analytical method. Based on these data, far-field sound pressure distributions due to the modal vibrations for a given geometry are also calculated using an analytical solution. Modal sound powers and radiation efficiencies are calculated from the far-field sound pressure distributions and vibratory velocity distributions on the radial surfaces. Based on the results explained above, the geometric configuration that minimizes modal sound radiations in a given frequency range is determined. Finally sound power and radiation efficiency spectra for a unit harmonic force from the selected geometric configuration are obtained from structural and acoustic modal data using the modal expansion technique. Multi-modal sound radiations of the optimized disc that are obtained using proposed analytical methods are confirmed with numerical results. Using the procedure introduced in this article, sound radiation due to in-plane modes within a specific frequency range can be minimized by the disc geometry modifications in a comprehensive and convenient manner.
In this paper, 3-D frame design using refined plastic-hinge analysis accounting for local buckling is developed. This analysis accounts for material and geometric nonlinearities of the structural system and its component members. Moreover, the problem associated with conventional refined plastic-hinge analyses, which do not consider the degradation of the flexural strength caused by local buckling, is overcome. Efficient ways of assessing steel frame behavior including gradual yielding associated with residual stresses and flexure, second-order effect, and geometric imperfections are presented. In this study, a model consisting of the width-thickness ratio is used to account for local buckling. The proposed analysis is verified by the comparison of the LRFD results. A case study shows that local buckling is a very crucial element to be considered in second-order plastic-hinge analysis. The proposed analysis is shown to be an efficient, reliable tool ready to be implemented into design practice.

This paper purposes to provide a new perspective for better development of geography texts. For this purpose, we have applied spatial cognition development theory to children's drawings. We have suggested that children's spatial operation ability has three development stages according to their age: topological space, projective space, euclidean space. This study turns out that Piaget and Inhelder's spatial concept development theory is on the right track. However, we make clear that their division according to the age is not always accurate due to children's individual differences. These findings have educational implications as the following: First, it is dubious that most children can understand pictures, pictorial maps and illustrations in the third grader's textbook. Second, current textbooks require pictorial map understanding and drawing to third grade students and map drawing to fourth grade students. However, according to this study, the placement of these tasks are not fit for children's developmental stage because both tasks correspond to euclidean space operation. Therefore, we should remove them from the textbook for children at the age.
Image data is mostly stored in compressed form because of its huge size. Therefore, a series of cumbersome procedures is required to apply a transformation to image data: decompression, extraction of spatial data, transformation and recompression. In this paper, we employ DCT(Discrete Cosine Transform) coefficients to change the spatial presentation of images. DCT is commonly used in still image compression standards such as JPEG and moving picture compression standards such as MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and H.264. In this paper, we derived mathematically the relationship between the geometry transformation in the spatial domain and coefficient changes in the DCT domain and verified it with images in the JPEG file format. Because of the efficiency of transformation in the frequency domain, our findings can be utilized for light-weight partial image encryption for privacy data protection or entertainment contents protection.
