  • The investigation on the rock discontinuity geometry has been usually undergone by direct measurement on the rock exposures. But this sort of field work has disadvantages, which we, for example, restriction of surveying areas and consuming excessive times and labors. To cover these kinds of disadvantages, image processing could be regarded as an altemative way, with additional advantages such as automatic and objective tools when used under adequate computerized algorithm. This study was focused on the recognition of the rock discontinuities captured in the image of rock exposure by digital camera and the production of the discontinuity map automatically. The whole process was written using macro commands builtin image analyzer, ImagePro Plus. ver 4.1(Media Cybernetic). The procedure of image processing developed in this research could be divided with three steps, which are enhancement, recognition and extraction of discontinuity traces from the digital image. Enhancement contains combining and applying several filters to remove and relieve various types of noises from the image of rock surface. For the next step, recognition of discontinuity traces was executed. It used local topographic features characterized by the differences of gray scales between discontinuity and rock. Such segments of discontinuity traces extracted from the image were reformulated using an algorithm of computer decision-making criteria and linked to form complete discontinuity traces. To verify the image processing algorithms and their sequences developed in this research, discontinuity traces digitally photographed on the rock slope were analyzed. The result showed about 75~80% of discontinuities could be detected. It is thought to be necessary that the algorithms and computer codes developed in this research need to be advanced further especially in combining digital filters to produce images to be more acceptable for extraction of discontinuity traces and setting seed pixels automatically when linking trace segments to make a complete discontinuity trace.

  • Resistivity logging instruments are designed to measure the electrical resistivity of a formation, and this can be directly interpreted to provide a water-saturation profile. However, resistivity logs are sensitive to borehole and shoulder-bed effects, which often result in misinterpretation of the results. These effects are emphasised more in the presence of tool eccentricity. For precise interpretation of short- and long-normal logging measurements in the presence of tool eccentricity, we simulate and analyse eccentricity effects by combining the use of a Fourier series expansion in a new system of coordinates with a 2D goal-oriented high-order self-adaptive hp finite-element refinement strategy, where h denotes the element size and p the polynomial order of approximation within each element. The algorithm automatically performs local mesh refinement to construct an optimal grid for the problem under consideration. In addition, the proper combination of h and p refinements produces highly accurate simulations even in the presence of high electrical resistivity contrasts. Numerical results demonstrate that our algorithm provides highly accurate and reliable simulation results. Eccentricity effects are more noticeable when the borehole is large or resistive, or when the formation is highly conductive.

  • An efficient and accurate scheme has been constructed by taking advantages of the hi-quadratic spline scheme and the higher-order boundary element method selectively depending on computation domains. Boundary surfaces are represented by 8-node boundary elements to describe curved surfaces of a ship and its neighboring free surface more accurately. The variation of the velocity potential complies with the characteristics of the 8-node element on the body surface. But on the free surface, it is assumed to follow that of the hi-quadratic spline scheme. By which, the free surface solution is free from numerical damping and has better numerical dispersion property. As numerical examples, steady and unsteady Neumann-Kelvin problems are considered. Numerical results for a submerged spheroid, Series 60($C_B=0.6$) and a modified support the proposed method. Finally, a new upstream radiation condition is derived using a wave equation operator in order to deal with problems for subcritical reduced frequency. The relevance of this operator has been confirmed in the case of unsteady Kelvin source potential.

  • Bending and axial forces simultaneously occur at the cross-section of a shotcrete lining reinforced with steel supports due to the tunnel geometry. The shotcrete has changing flexural stiffness depending on the axial forces and, as a result, severely nonlinear behavior. The mechanical properties of a shotcrete-steel composite also depend on the type of steel support. This study presents a fiber section element model considering the effect of axial force to evaluate the nonlinear behavior of a shotcrete-steel composite. Additionally, the model was used to analyze the effects of different types of steel supports on the load capacity. Furthermore, a modified hyperbolic model for ground reaction, including strain-softening, is proposed to account for the ground-lining interaction. The model was validated by comparing the numerical results with results from previous load test performed on arched shotcrete specimens. The changes in mechanical responses of the lining were also investigated. Results show a lining with doubly reinforcement rebar has similar load capacity as a lining with H-shaped supports. The use of more materials for the steel support enhances the residual resistance. For all types of steel reinforcement, the contribution of steel supports during peak load decreases as the ground becomes stiffer.

  • Spatial dose rates of high dose $^{131}I$ therapy patients were Measured Three dimensional (X, Y, Z) distributions. I have constructed geometrical an aluminum support structure for spatial dose meters placed in 5 different heights, 8 different azimuthal angles, 6 different time interval and distance 100 cm from High dose$^{131}I$ therapy patients. when the height of vertical plane Spatial dose distribution is 100 cm, the Spatial dose rates is max and the error range is low. the vertical plane Spatial dose rates was found to be 71.85 ${\mu}Sv/h$ on the average at a distance of 100 cm, height 100 cm, from the patients 24 hours after $^{131}I$ oral administration. I divided 12 patients into two groups. I have analysed group A (drinking 5 L water) and group B (drinking 3 L water) in order to measure decrease spatial dose rates. I have found the spatial distributions of patient dose rates is $44.9{\pm}7.2$ ${\mu}Sv/h$ in group A and $100.3{\pm}8.1$ ${\mu}Sv/h$ in group B by 24 after $^{131}I$ oral administration. the reduction factor was found to be approximately 54 % through drinking 5 L water during 24 hours.

  • Synthetic Aperture Radar is able to provide images of wide coverage in day, night, and all-weather conditions. Recently, as the SAR image resolution improves up to the sub-meter level, their applications are rapidly expanding accordingly. Especially there is a growing interest in the use of geographic information of high resolution SAR images and the change detection will be one of the most important technique for their applications. In this paper, an automatic threshold tracking and change detection algorithm is proposed applicable to high-resolution SAR images. To detect changes within SAR image, a reference image is generated using log-ratio operator and its amplitude distribution is estimated through K-S test. Assuming SAR image has a non-gaussian amplitude distribution, a generalized thresholding technique is applied using Kittler and Illingworth minimum-error estimation. Also, MoLC parametric estimation method is adopted to improve the algorithm performance on rough ground target. The implemented algorithm is tested and verified on the simulated SAR raw data. Then, it is applied to the spaceborne high-resolution SAR images taken by Cosmo-Skymed and KOMPSAT-5 and the performances are analyzed and compared.

  • Various algorithms and architectures for efficient packet classification have been widely studied. Packet classification algorithms based on a decision tree structure such as HiCuts and HyperCuts are known to be the best by exploiting the geometrical representation of rules in a classifier. However, the algorithms are not practical since they involve complicated heuristics in selecting a dimension of cuts and determining the number of cuts at each node of the decision tree. Moreover, the cutting is not efficient enough since the cutting is based on regular interval which is not related to the actual range that each rule covers. In this paper, we proposed a new efficient packet classification algorithm using a range cutting. The proposed algorithm primarily finds out the ranges that each rule covers in 2-dimensional prefix plane and performs cutting according to the ranges. Hence, the proposed algorithm constructs a very efficient decision tree. The cutting applied to each node of the decision tree is optimal and deterministic not involving the complicated heuristics. Simulation results for rule sets generated using class-bench databases show that the proposed algorithm has better performance in average search speed and consumes up to 3-300 times less memory space compared with previous cutting algorithms.

  • The extreme floods recently are have been attributed global warming, The development of a canal tunnel to prevent floods by making a bypass or undercurrent to flood discharge in a major flooding area is required because urban flooding in heavy rainfall occurs frequently, increasing the impermeability according to lack of capacity in sewage to urbanization by the existing urban basin. In this study, a numerical simulation was performed to support design standards for a multi-purpose waterway tunnel combined road tunnel of canal tunnel. The numerical simulation showed that the size of the friction loss occurring in the tunnel section of the same channel occurred more than the theoretically calculated frictional loss derived from the numerical simulations. This is probably due to the additional frictional loss caused by the change in the flow structure due to the geometry of the pipe when the shape of the channel is non-circular. The increase in friction loss was more pronounced in the laminar flow than in the turbulent flow. Depending on the shape of the conduit, the friction loss should be adjusted for accurate flow calculations. This result can provide the basin information about the design of flood by a pass conduit.

  • In this paper, a new digital watermarking algorithm using wavelet transform is proposed. Wavelet transform is widely used for image processing, because of its multiresolution characteristic which conforms to the principles of the human visual system(HVS). It is also very efficient for localizing images in the spatial and frequency domain. Since wavelet coefficients can be characterized by the gaussian distribution, the proposed algorithm uses a gaussian distributed random vector as the watermark in order to achieve invisibility and robustness. After the original image is transformed using DWT(Discrete Wavelet Transform), the coefficients of all subbands including LL subband are utilized to equally embed the watermark to the whole image. To select perceptually significant coefficients for each subband, we use level-adaptive thresholding. The watermark is embedded to the selected coeffocoents, using different scale factors according to the wavelet characteristics. In the process of watermark detection, the similarity between the original watermark and the extracted watermark is calculated by using vector projection method. We analyze the performance of the proposed algorithm, compared with other transform-domain watermarking methods. The experimental results tested on various images show that the proposed watermark is less visible to human eyes and more robust to image compressions, image processings, geometric transformations and various noises, than the existing methods.

  • The railroad bridges have been usually experienced by vibration and impact in service state. With this reason, it is important that the effective strengthening capacity should be considered to resist the kind of service loading. In this study, NSM strengthening technique is recommended for the concrete railroad bridge because of its better effective resistance for dynamic loading condition and strengthening cost than the conventional externally bonded strengthening using fiber sheet. However, to widely apply NSM method for the concrete railroad bridge, it needs that the strengthening ratio has to be reasonably evaluated with geometrical and material uncertainties, especially for the concrete bridge under long-term service state without the apparent design history and detail information such as concrete compressive strength, reinforcing ratio, railroad characteristics. The purpose of this study is to propose the critical strengthening ratio of CFRP plate for the targeted concrete railroad bridge with uncertainties of deterioration of the structures. To do this, Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) for geometrical and material uncertainties have been applied so that this approach may bring the reasonable strengthening ratio of CFRP plate considering probabilistic uncertainties for the targeted concrete railroad bridge. Finally, the critical strengthening ratio of NSM strengthened by CFRP plate is calculated by using the limit state function based on the target reliability index of 3.5.
