  • New and renewable energy sources have drawn attention because of climate change. Many studies have been carried out in waste-to-energy field. Fast pyrolysis of waste lignocelluosic biomass is one of the waste-to-energy technologies. Bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) reactor is widely used for fast pyrolysis of the biomass. In BFB pyrolyzer, bubble behavior influences on the chemical reaction. Accordingly, in the present study, hydrodynamic characteristics and fast pyrolysis reaction of waste lignocellulosic biomass occurring in a BFB pyrolyzer are scrutinized. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of the fast pyrolysis reactor is carried out by using Eulerian-Granular approach. And two-stage semi-global kinetics is applied for modeling the fast pyrolysis reaction of waste lignocellulosic biomass. To summarize, generation and ascendant motion of bubbles in the bed affect particle behavior. Thus biomass particles are well mixed with hot sand and consequent rapid heat transfer occurs from sand to biomass particles. As a result, primary reaction is observed throughout the bed. And reaction rate of tar formation is the highest. Consequently, tar accounts for 66wt.% of the product gas. However, secondary reaction occurs mostly in the freeboard. Therefore, it is considered that bubble behavior and particle motions hardly influences on the secondary reaction.

  • In this study, as a method to increase the recycling of circulating fluidized bed combustion ash(CFBCA), CFBCA was utilized to produce autoclave aerated concrete product since CFBCA contains quicklime and calcium sulfate components that are required for the manufacture of autoclave aerated concrete. Successful achievement of such objective will bring cost reduction with high value addition, saving of natural resources, and the reduction of environmental load. Various mixing designs were designed to evaluate the properties of autoclave aerated concrete made of CFBCA. Based on series of experimental program, prototypes mix design for factory manufacturing was obtained. According to the experimental results, it was confirmed that gypsum can be replaced with CFBCA through the method of pre-treating the CFBCA as a slurry. It was possible to produce competitive autoclave aerated concrete products using CFBCA.

  • Flow characteristics and the operating range of gas velocity was investigated for a two-stage bubbling fluidized-bed (0.1 m-i.d., 1.2 m-high) that had continuous solids feed and discharge. Solids were fed in to the upper fluidized-bed and overflowed into the bed section of the lower fluidized-bed through a standpipe (0.025 m-i.d.). The standpipe was simply a dense solids bed with no mechanical or non-mechanical valves. The solids overflowed the lower bed for discharge. The fluidizing gas was fed to the lower fluidized-bed and the exit gas was also used to fluidize the upper bed. Air was used as fluidizing gas and mixture of coarse (< $1000{\mu}m$ in diameter and $3090kg/m^3$ in apparent density) and fine (< $100{\mu}m$ in diameter and $4400kg/m^3$ in apparent density) particles were used as bed materials. The proportion of fine particles was employed as the experimental variable. The gas velocity of the lower fluidized-bed was defined as collapse velocity in the condition that the standpipe was emptied by upflow gas bypassing from the lower fluidized-bed. It could be used as the maximum operating velocity of the present process. The collapse velocity decreased after an initial increase as the proportion of fine particles increased. The maximum took place at the proportion of fine particles 30%. The trend of the collapse velocity was similar with that of standpipe pressure drop. The collapse velocity was expressed as a function of bulk density of particles and voidage of static bed. It increased with an increase of bulk density, however, decreased with an increase of voidage of static bed.

  • The characteristics of fluidization in a centrifugal fluidized bed with a 184 mm inner diameter, 50 mm width of the gas distributor was observed by photographs and experimental works using Cu-ZSM-5 zeolite catalysts with a mean diameter of $26{\mu}m$ and $32{\mu}m$ as bed materials at a rotor at 400rpm and 600rpm. Under these experimental ranges, the experimental results clearly showed the effects of the number of rotation of the rotor on the behavior of bubbles in the centrifugal fluidized bed. As the number of rotations of the rotor increased, the gas velocity at which bubbles begin to be formed also increased but the diameter of the bubbles decreased. In addition, the size of the bubbles in the centrifugal fluidized bed were relatively smaller than those in the conventional bubbling fluidized bed.

  • The behavior of bubbles in a centrifugal fluidized bed with a 340mm inner diameter, 195mm high was observed by photographs using 10.5${\mu}m$and 21.5${\mu}m$mean diameter of $Al_2O_3$particles as bed materials at each of 400rpm, 600rpm, 800rpm, and 1000rpm number of rotations of the rotor. At these experimental ranges, the experimental results clearly proved the effect of number of rotations of the rotor on the behavior of bubbles in the centrifugal fluidized bed. As the number of rotations of the rotor increased, the gas velocity at which bubbles begin to be formed also increased but diameter of bubbles decreased. And sizes of the bubbles were relatively small.

  • In this study, a bubbling fluidized bed pyrolyzer (0.076 m I.D. and 0.8 m high) was employed to investigate the fast pyrolysis characteristics of larch sawdust which is abundant in Korea. The effects of operation conditions, such as bed temperature ($350-550^{\circ}C$), fluidization velocity ratio ($U_o/U_{mf} $: 2.0-6.0) and feeding rate (2.2-7.0 g/min) on product yields and their chemical components were studied. The number of chemical compounds in the bio-oil decreased with the increasing bed temperature because of secondary pyrolysis. The effects of the Uo/Umf ratio and feeding rate on bio-oil compositions were relatively lower than those of the bed temperature.
