  • Numerical analysis was performed to investigate the behavior of rammed aggregate piers (RAP) in soft ground with various interface conditions, area replacement ratio, aspect ratio and surcharge loads of pile and soil. And field modulus load test was carried out to predict the input parameters. Field prototype (unit cell) tests are in progress to compare the result of numerical analysis. Also a modified load transfer equation of RAP on soft foundation was proposed. According to the results, the behavior of RAP depended on such as interface conditions, settlement characteristics (free strain) and stress concentration ratio. On the other hand, maximun stress concentration ratio increased as area replacement ratio and aspect ratio increased, and it was remarkably affected by surcharge loads.

  • The demand for large-scale horticultural complexes utilizing reclaimed lands is increasing, and one of the pending issues for the construction of large-scale facilities is to establish foundation design criteria. In this paper, we tried to review previous studies on the method of reinforcing the foundation of soft ground. Target construction methods are spiral piles, wood piles, crushed stone piles and PF (point foundation) method. In order to evaluate the performance according to the basic construction method, pull-out resistance, bearing capacity, and settlement amount were measured. At the same diameter, pull-out resistance increased with increasing penetration depth. Simplified comparison is difficult due to the difference in reinforcement method, diameter, and penetration depth, but it showed high bearing capacity in the order of crushed stone pile, PF method, and wood pile foundation. In the case of wood piles, the increase in uplift resistance was different depending on the slenderness ratio. Wood, crushed stone pile and PF construction methods, which are foundation reinforcement works with a bearing capacity of 105 kN/㎡ to 826 kN/㎡, are considered sufficient methods to be applied to the greenhouse foundation. There was a limitation in grasping the consistent trend of each foundation reinforcement method through existing studies. If these data are supplemented through additional empirical tests, it is judged that a basic design guideline that can satisfy the structure and economic efficiency of the greenhouse can be presented.

  • Leakage incidents due to the fault of hazmat tank foundations are likely to cause the tremendous fire disaster in the national industry cluster area. The proper design and construction of tank foundation should be required to prevent the tank fire. In the study, the types of typical tank foundations were classified and modeling the individual tank type for 3D FEM analysis was performed to suggest the guideline for the design and construction of tank foundations. Matters to be attended of the foundation design and construction are reviewed through the comparison assessment of the numerical analysis results of the foundation types.

  • Solid mattress foundation using geogrid has often been used on soft grounds to increase the bearing capacity, and its effect has received much recognition. Geogrid-mattress system is the method of construction which increases the bearing capacity and the effect of controlling settlement by dispersing load to wider foundation through its stiffness. But ifs mechanism has not been examined exactly yet. considered to be influential factors in the experiments. As a result of the experiments, the characteristic of dispersing stress under mattress foundations was understood and the way of calculating the bearing capacity in designing the mattress foundations was suggested.

  • In general, sand compaction pile(SCP) method and gravel compaction pile(GCP) method have been mainly used to reinforce soft soils such as soft clay or loose sandy ground. But the sand compaction pile method has problems such as lack of sand supply and destroying the nature while collecting sand, the gravel compaction pile method has a problem such as decreased permeability of the drainage material due to clogging. Recently, the study to replace sand with bottom ash which has similar engineering properties with sand is in active. As a fundamental research on bottom ash mixture compaction pile utilizing bottom ash, its behavioral characteristics depending on granular materials and replacement ratio has been simulated numerically. In particular, Settlement Reduction Ratio(SRR) according to the distance from the center of pile was calculated. The main findings were as follows. Change values of Mixture Compaction Pile's SRR according to granular materials showed similar patterns and stiffness of the composite soil is increased depending on the replacement ratio so SRR showed decreased patterns. Especially, when the replacement ratio is in 20~40%, it increase significantly. When the replacement ratio is over 40%, it increase slowly. When considering the economics, 30~40% replacement ratio is appropriate.

  • Pile or column supported embankments have been increasingly employed to construct highway or railway embankments over soft soils. Piles or columns of stiffer material installed in the soft ground can provide the necessary support by transferring the embankment load to a firm stratum using a soil arching. However, there has been reported to occur a relatively large differential settlement between the piles and the untreated soils. Geosynthetic reinforced pile or column supported embankment (GRPS) is often used to minimize the differential settlement. Two dimensional finite element anlyses have been performed on both the column supported embankments and the geogrid reinforced column supported embankments by using a PLAXIS 2D to evaluate the soil arching effect. Based on the results obtained from finite element analyses, the stress reduction ratio decreases as the area replacement ratio increases in the column supported embankments. For the geogrid reinforced column supported embankments, the geogrid reinforcemnt can reduce differential settlements effectively. In additon, the use of stiffer geogrid is appeared to be more effective in reducing the differential settlements.

  • Downdrag force develops when a pile is driven through a soil layer which will settle more than a pile. There is no obvious criterion for application of the current pile design method considering the negative skin friction. Therefore, in this study, numerical analyses were performed to investigate the behavior of a single pile subjected to negative skin friction and their results were used to determine the applicability of the current design method. Including three different sites in Song-do area and two different cases with friction pile and end bearing pile conditions, total six cases were considered. The load-settlement relationships and the neutral points were estimated for different end bearing conditions and the allowable bearing capacity of piles with negative skin friction was investigated through parametric studies. Based on the results showed that the negative skin friction made a major influence on the settlement of a pile and its stress. However the allowable bearing capacity may not be influenced by the negative skin friction. Compared with the allowable bearing capacity obtained from the ultimate bearing capacity with the safety factor of 3, the current design method with the safety factor of 3 underestimated the allowable bearing capacities regardless of the end bearing conditions. On the other hand, the current design method with the safety factor of 2 yielded reasonable results depending on the end bearing conditions.

  • Micropile technology has evolved continuously since its instruction by Fernando Lizzi in the 1950s. The effects of group micropile have been researched by many researchers. The effects of group micropile differ and change with pile length, pile spacing (S), pile angle (${\theta}$) and pile embedded conditions. In the present study, the effects of resistance increase and settlement reduction from micropiles were investigated through a series of axial load tests. For the study, axial load tests were performed using mat, group micropiles and micropiled-raft (MPR) in various pile spacing and pile angle conditions. As the result, the effects of resistance of micropiled-raft were 80% (3D) to 110% (7D) of the total resistance of mat and group micropile. The effects of settlement restraint of micropiled-raft were 20% (S=3D, ${\theta}=45^{\circ}$) to 70% (7D, ${\theta}=15^{\circ}$) of settlement of mat foundation.

  • Laboratory model tests to determine the permanent settlement of a surface strip foundati on supported by geogrid -reinforced saturated clay and subjected to a low -frequency cyclic load were performed. In conducting the test, the foundation was initially subjected to an allowable static load. The cyclic load was then super -imposed over the static load. The variation of the maximum permanent settlement with the intensity of the static load and the intensity of the amplitude of the cyclic load are also presented.

  • The piled-raft foundation, a new design concept, is one of the most effective kinds of foundation for reducing settlement of structures. An alternative piled-raft system with disconnection cap and a sand cushion between the pile and raft was also investigated to compare the influence of ultimate bearing capacity and settlement. Load-settlement relation curves were used to evaluate the ultimate bearing capacity. In the numerical analyses, a plane strain elasto-plastic finite element model (Mohr-Coulomb model) was used to present the response of the piled-raft foundation.
