  • Load tests for fourteen small-scale foundation models combined with geotextile, sand mat and rigid mat were conducted to study the effect of geotextile(G/T), sand mat(S/M), and foundation types on deformation of foundation soils. In addition, the experimental results were compared with those obtained from numerical analysis using a software program. The main conclusions were summarized as follows: 1. The restraint effect on G/T is more outstanding on the lateral displacement than on the vertical one. 2. The single use of S/M has better effect on the restraint of vertical displacement than lateral one. 3. The use of both S/M and G/T is required for the restraint of lateral and vertical displacement. 4. Multi-layered foundation with large rigidity shows similar tendency to that of foundation reinforced with S/M and G/T.

  • The load distribution and deformation of single piles which is embedded in Jumunjin sand and Kimhae clay are investigated, based on small scale model tests. Special attention is given to the consideration of flexural rigidity in laterally loaded piles. To consider the flexural rigidity of the pile, tests are performed with the aluminium piles of three different length under different relative densities and undrained shear strength. The test results indicate that the initial slope from the results of tests is proportional to the depth and pile-soil rigidity in both soils. But the increasing rate of the initial slope in the clay is less than in the sand. In addition, the soil resistance is more related to the depth and soil condition than the pile rigidity. Base on the test results, an empirical formula is proposed, which is good agreement with previously published small scale model test and field lateral load test.

  • In construction of buildings in Korea, the buildings are frequently founded on the weathered ground (weathered soil/rock, fractured rock). In this case, to make a full use of a bearing capacity of a weathered ground for economic design, the shallow mat foundation system could be used. In this study, we have researched three cases of mat foundations on the weathered ground in Korea, and analyzed and considered the design procedures and the reinforcing methods. That is, we have considered the detail design, analysis proceedings, the ground settlement evaluation proceedings, the rock face mapping evaluations after excavation and reinforcing methods of the mat foundation on the weathered ground. And large scale plate load tests on the weathered ground supporting the mat foundation were performed and also load bearing capacity and settlement of actual mat foundation, considering the scale effect, were evaluated.

  • In order to find out the load bearing behavior of sand and clay which sustain three types of shallow footing, finite element analyses were performed. Failure zone of sand which sustain strip footing was affected by relative density of sand whereas, failure zone of clay was not affected by soil strength and it was similar to the failure zone which is considered in theory. Considering the shape of load-settlement curves obtained by numerical analyses, punching shear failure can be seen in loose sand and ultimate bearing load can not be seen in dense sand whereas, yielding point can be seen in clay. Ultimate bearing loads for sand predicted by theory were greater than those obtained by numerical analyses and ultimate bearing loads for clay predicted by theory were similar to those of numerical analyses. Ultimate bearing loads determined by 1 inch settlement criteria were slightly less than those of numerical analyses.

  • Types of foundation of high rise buildings are primarily determined by loads transmitted from super structure, soil bearing capacity and available construction technology, The use of deep foundation of the buildings considered in this study due to the fact that rock of enough bearing capacity is not found down until 90~l00m. When a concentration of high soil pressure must be distributed over the entire building area, when small soft soil areas must be bridged, and when compressible strata are located at a shallow depth, mat foundation may be useful in order to have settlement and differential settlement of variable soils be minimized. The concept of mat foundation will also demonstrate some difficulties of applications if the load bearing demand directly carried down to the load -bearing strata exceeds the load -bearing capacity. This paper introduces both the analysis and design of mat type foundation for high rise buildings as well as the method-ology of modelling of the soil foundation, especially, engineered to redistribute the stress exceeding the soil bearing capacity. This process will result in the wide spread of stresses over the entire building foundation.
