  • In this paper, concrete base to sleeve connections of hybrid substructures for offshore wind turbines were suggested and investigated experimentally. Punching shear strength tests with well-instrumented three connections under different reinforcement ratios and loading conditions were conducted to investigate the punching shear strength and the behavior of the concrete base to a sleeve connection. The test results showed that the punching strength and stiffness of the connections are affected mainly by the reinforcement ratios. The loading conditions with an axial load and proportional moment cannot affect the stiffness but affect the strength of the connections because of the axial load-moment interaction. The punching shear failure and critical section of the each test specimen are also discussed.

  • In Recent experimental research results of connection method between steel pipe pile and concrete footing are provided based on various experimental observations. It gives a shedding light toward developing better connection method for steel pipe pile at the field application. In this study, the newly developed method is tested for compressive, pull put and combination load including moment with carefully designed monitoring system. The measured data show that new method have at least equivalent or better load resistant capacities compared with those of specified method in Korea Road Design Specification. It is also tried to define and investigate the load transfer mechanism for new method.

  • This is a preliminary study on the development of precast beam-column joints for dry construction methodology. Precast beam column joints with thru-connectors (BCJ_TC) using high strength bars or PS strands were developed and their seismic performance including strength degradation, stiffness degradation and energy dissipation capacity was experimentally evaluated. Test results showed that compressive failures at the end blocks of PC beam members occurred dominantly while PC columns including panel zones were free from any damage. However, the connections confined with CFRP at the end block showed much improved seismic performance than that of the unconfined connections. Connections with neoprene pad fillers between beam and column interfaces were better than the other connections in all the seismic performances except initial stiffness. To improve the seismic performances of BCJ_TC, compressive strength of the concrete at the end block need to be increased to compensate for the additional compressive stresses due to unbonded connectors and deformation of connectors should be controlled respectively.

  • Storage racks have suffered huge losses due to earthquakes, but related research and regulations are relatively insufficient non-structural elements compared to the structural elements. In this study, we tried to experimentally analyze the behavioral characteristics of storage racks due to external force according to the fixing conditions of the column-foundations connection of storage racks. In general, the column-foundations connection of storage racks is installed according to the user's convenience without installation standards and regulations. For this reason, this study conducted a behavior analysis test on four full-scale storage racks with the condition of column-foundations connection of four typical storage racks. The behavior characteristics analysis test was performed by two-direction of the shake table with El-Centro seismic wave. To confirm the behavior characteristics according to the magnitude of the seismic load, 50% ~ 150% of the seismic waves were increased by 50% for each test. In addition, a resonance search test was conducted to confirm the natural frequency of each storage racks foundations fixing condition. Among the data obtained through the test, the displacement of the top layer and the permanent displacement after the test were compared for each condition to analyze the behavior characteristics of the column-foundations fixed conditions of the storage racks. As a result, the change of natural frequency was small in storage racks due to the change of the conditions of the foundations, and the behavior characteristics were changed due to the difference of the restoring force due to the change of the storage racks foundations condition rather than the influence of the natural frequency of the input load.

  • Microbial fuel cell (MFC) can produce electricity from oxidation-reduction of organic and inorganic matters by electrochemically active bacteria as catalyst. Stacked MFCs have been investigated for overcoming low electricity generation of single MFC. In this study, two-typed stacked-MFCs (submerged-flat and stand-falt) were operated according to electrode connection for optimal stacked technology of MFC. In case of submerged-flat MFC with all separator electrode assembly (SEA) sharing anode chamber, MFC with mixed-connection showed more voltage loss than MFC with single-connection method. And MFC stacked in parallel showed better voltage production than MFC stacked in series. In case of stand-flat MFC, voltage loss was bigger when SEAs sharing anodic chamber only were connected in series. Voltage loss was decreased when SEAs parallel connected SEAs sharing anodic chamber were connected in series.

  • The objective of this test series was to determine shear load per unit length which causes a unit slip in the fastener joint. The shear load is one of major factors which reflect partial composite action for cold-formed steel wall stud panels. Test method used were based on the methods presented in the 1962 AISI Specification. According to the comparison with experimental strength, it is seen that the shear loads used in nominal axial strength predictions made acceptable results.
