  • This study sought to understand the mechanical behavior according to the shape of the connecting part of the hybrid beam. This part is composed of central steel. with the end reinforced by concrete in the experiment of cyclic loading. The experimental result was compared and verified with the ultimate strength formula. Likewise, the composite effect and the effectiveness of seismic capacity and stress transmission were examined. The types of each setup were as follows: main bars by welding type, reinforcing by end-plate type, reinforcing by shear connector type, and shear connector type. Results showed that the reinforcing by end-plate type and the shear connector type had excellent strength and seismic capacity as well as better stress transmission. This was due to the unity between reinforced concrete and the steel's connecting part. However, the experimental result was somehow different from the previously established ultimate strength formula. Thus, a definite ultimate strength formula is required.

  • In this study, to improve the connection performance between the existing reinforced concrete (R/C) frame and the strengthening member, we proposed a new H-section steel frame with elastic pad (HSFEP) system for seismic rehabilitation of existing medium-to-low-rise reinforced concrete (R/C) buildings. This HSFEP strengthening system exhibits an excellent connection performance because an elastic pad is installed between the existing structure and reinforcing frame. The method shows a strength design approach implemented via retrofitting, to easily increase the ultimate lateral load capacity of R/C buildings lacking seismic data, which exhibit shear failure mechanism. Two full-size two-story R/C frame specimens were designed based on an existing R/C building in Korea lacking seismic data, and then strengthened using the HSFEP system; thus, one control specimen and one specimen strengthened with the HSFEP system were used. Pseudodynamic tests were conducted to verify the effects of seismic retrofitting, and the earthquake response behavior with use of the proposed method, in terms of the maximum response strength, response displacement, and degree of earthquake damage compared with the control R/C frame. Test results revealed that the proposed HSFEP strengthening method, internally applied to the R/C frame, effectively increased the lateral ultimate strength, resulting in reduced response displacement of R/C structures under large scale earthquake conditions.

  • In this study, in order to confirm the seismic performance of reinforced concrete frames retrofitted with Wall Friction Damper(WFD), the test was conducted by setting two-story Reinforced concrete frames (reference specimen, OMF-N and specimen retrofitted with internal H-shaped steel frame and WFD, OMF-ALL(H)) as main variables. The WFD Seismic Retrofit Method is a mixture of strength improvement and energy dissipation methods. To prevent the pre-destruction of existing structure by friction force before sufficient energy dissipation of WFD, the internal H-shaped steel frame and chemical anchor that penetrates the side of the beam were used to install WFD. According to the test results, the OMF-N specimen showed an brittle failure pattern caused by the shear force of the R/C column after the maximum strength was expressed. The OMF-ALL(H) specimen showed that the reduction of pinching effect and the failure of the RC column occurred. Also, the maximum strength, cumulative energy dissipation and ductility of OMF-ALL(H) increased 3.01 times, 7.2 times and 1.72 times for OMF-N. As a results, test results revealed that the WFD Seismic Retrofit Method installed on Reinforced concrete structure improves the seismic performance and the strengthening effect is valid.

  • The infill-wall strengthening method has been widely used for the seismic performance enhancement of the conventional reinforced concrete (RC) frame structures with non-seismic detail, which is one of the promising techniques to secure the high resisting capacity against lateral forces induced by earthquake. During the application of the infill-wall strengthening method, however, it often restricts the use of the structure. In addition, it is difficult to cast the connection part between the wall and the frame, and also difficult to ensure the shear resistance performances along the connection. In this study, an advanced strengthening method using the externally-anchored precast wall-panel (EPCW) was proposed to overcome the disadvantages of the conventional infill-wall strengthening method. The one-third scaled four RC frame specimens were fabricated, and the cyclic loading tests were conducted to verify the EPCW strengthening method. The test results showed that the strength, lateral stiffness, energy dissipation capacity of the RC frame structures strengthened by the proposed EPCW method were significantly improved compared to the control test specimen.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a precast concrete structural wall system that can assure reliable seismic performance. In previous studies, the connections of precast concrete structural walls have had some problems in their seismic performance. Therefore, this research proposes precast concrete structural walls which have an improved seismic performance. One is a hybrid precast concrete structural wall that is composed of a reinforced concrete component and a precast concrete component, and another is a precast concrete wall whose reinforcements have a partially reduced section and are partially unbonded from the surrounding concrete. To evaluate the seismic performance of the proposed precast concrete structural walls, the behavior of three specimens, including a reinforced concrete wall, were subjected to reversed cyclic combined flexure and shear. According to the test results, the proposed precast concrete structural walls have reliable seismic performance.

  • The seismic performance of non-ductile reinforced concrete (RC) frame retrofitted with H-beam frame and cast expansive mortar into joint between existing RC frame and H-beam frame is investigated experimentally and analytically. RC frames considered in the study contain non-ductile reinforcement details of low-rise school building constructed in Korea before 1988. The tests were conducted on half-scale specimens simulating the lower frame assemblages of a typical school building. Two one-bay, one-story RC frames with and without retrofitting with H-beam frame and expansive joint mortar were tested to failure. Test and analysis results indicated that seismic strengthening using H-beam and expansive joint mortar significantly improved the lateral strength and stiffness of non-ductile RC frame without installing anchor bolts to fit H-beam frame into existing RC frame. The effectiveness of seismic strengthening technology proposed in the study for non-ductile RC frame was verified experimentally and analytically.

  • Beam-column gravity or Intermediate Moment frames subjected to unexpected large displacements are vulnerable when no seismic details are provided, which is typical. Conversely, economic efficiency of those frames is decreased if unnecessary special detailing is applied as the beam and column size becomes quite large and steel congestion is caused by joint transverse reinforcement in beam-column connections. Moderate seismic design is used in Korea for beam-column connections of buildings with structural walls, which are to be destroyed when the unexpected large earthquake occurs. Nonetheless, performance of such beamcolumn connections may be substantially improved by the addition of steel fibers. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of steel fibers in reinforced concrete exterior beam-column connections and possibility for the replacement of some joint transverse reinforcement. Ten half-scale beam-column connections with non-seismic details were tested under cyclic loads with two cycles at each drift up to 19 cycles. Main test parameters used were the volume ratio of steel fibers (0%, 1%, 1.5%) and joint transverse reinforcement amount. The test results show that maximum capacity, energy dissipation capacity, shear strength and bond condition are improved with the application of steel fibers to substitute transverse reinforcement of beam-column connections. Furthermore, several shear strength equations for exterior connections were examined, including the proposed equation for steel fiber-reinforced concrete exterior connections with non-seismic details.

  • The bridge piers under service suffered a brittle failure due to the deterioration of lap-spliced longitudinal reinforcement without developing its flexural capacity or ductility. The earthquake induced lateral force results in tension which causes bond-slip failure at the lap-spliced region in circular bridge piers. In this case, such a brittle failure can be controlled by the seismic retrofit using FRP laminated circular tube. The retrofitted piers using FRP laminated circular tube showed significant improvement in seismic performance due to FRP's confinement effect. This paper presents the analytical results on the seismic strengthening effect of circular bridge piers with poor lap-splice details and strengthened with FRP laminated circular tube. FRP's confinement effect is predicted by the classical elasticity solution for the laminated circular tube manufactured with several layers. The FRP laminated circular tube induces the flexural failure instead of a bond-slip failure of the circular reinforced concrete piers under seismic induced lateral forces. To investigate the correctness and effectiveness of analytical solution derived in this study, the analytical results were compared with the experimental data and it was confirmed that the results were correlated well each other, The effects on the confinement of FRP laminated circular tube, such as the number of layers, the fiber orientations, and the mechanical properties, were investigated. From the parametric study, it was found that the number of layers, the fiber orientations, and the major Young's modulus (E11) of the FRP laminated circular tube were the dominant parameters affecting the confinement of reinforced concrete circular bridge piers.
