  • Since the year 2000, the need for an improvement of archival descriptions has been an increasing issue, due to the growing usage and amount of archival materials. Unlike the development of descriptions for paper records, however, the technological development and research for moving image descriptions has been limited due to its diversity and specificity. This research investigated the current status and the specificity of the moving image descriptions and also examined major international archival description cases. In-depth interviews with archival professionals were also conducted. Based on the findings, this study suggested the need for redefinition of and continuous research on the fundamental values of moving image information, moving image description and management based on digilog view points, the development of user-centric description and search aides, the creation of moving image values using a relevant information management system, and the improvement of moving image description elements throughout the life-cycle of the material.

  • Research records are essential records to explain the accountability of research throughout the life cycle of a research project. Thus, they need to be properly managed, preserved, and shared. This study analyzed the effectiveness and ability of applying DMP to research records management. This study also suggested the RRMP (Research Records Management Plan) for the research records management and preservation in scientific research institutes. RRMP is considered as up-front planning for the research records management and preservation before any records are created.

  • Previously, the International Council of Archives (ICA) provided the General International Standard Archival Description (ISAD(G)) and the International Standard Archival Authority Record for Corporate Bodies, Persons and Families (ISAAR(CPF)) for the systematic archival description by the Committee on Best Practice and Standards. Recently, the new conceptual model and ontology, which is called "Record in Context" (RIC), is being developed by the ICA Experts Group on Archival Description (EGAD). For developing the new archival standard, ICA EGAD has referenced the archival standards of Australia, Spain, and Finland, as well as the FRBRoo integrated model of the museum and library fields and the legacy ICA's descriptive standards. This study, therefore, examined these international trends on the archival descriptive standards and derived a number of suggestions for improvement. As a result, descriptive standards are changing from the guidelines for the standardized archival description to the upper conceptual model and ontology for the flexible archival description and sharing of archival metadata. There is a need to adapt the change of the information environment and promote cooperation among cultural heritage institutions.

  • In the digital environment, electronic records are explosively increasing, but there are little concerns on how to effectively manage and service. On-Nara 2.0 and record management system, the information system of records production and management stage, are being developed and distributed on the cloud base. Archives management system requires the acquisition of new record management techniques because they need to acquire and manage various types of private records as well as public records. In this paper, we will discuss automation and intelligent technologies for archives management.

  • The scale of research and development (R&D) investment is increasing to strengthen national competitiveness through technological innovation, leading to an increased interest in investment efficiency. In records management, the National Archives of Korea has been leading the national research and development project since 2008. Accordingly, this study analyzed R&D projects in records management regarding implementing organization, performance or outcomes, and subjects, targeting 111 National Archives of Korea contract research projects from 2008 to 2022. The analysis showed that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) were the most likely to conduct research, the majority of the research outcomes were academic publications, and there were some discrepancies between the reported performance in research and the actual performance. In terms of research subjects, the most common type of records are paper or print documents, establishing an electronic management system among the National Archives' works. In terms of the frequency of keywords in the records management process and research projects, it was found that research was mainly conducted on "preservation." Meanwhile, only 10 cases, or 9% of the 111 projects, were found to be relevant in terms of utilizing big data and developing intelligent technologies related to digital transformation. Therefore, the effectiveness of the R&D project must be improved through follow-up management of the results even after the research project is completed. In addition, in terms of research topics, it was identified that aside from "preservation," studies focusing on "transfer," "classification," "evaluation," and "collection," as well as research that responds to digital transformation, are needed.

  • The importance of record management is emphasized in various fields. In the field of sports in particular, the importance of record management is key, and many efforts are being made to keep a record of the history of many sports. Therefore, in this study, a plan to develop a sports record information service centered on basketball was proposed. In this study, the sports records information service development plan that is described not only has an eye toward developing technology, but is also described from the perspective of records management, which has recently been in high demand. To this end, a demand analysis was conducted on prospective users through FGI, and procedural elements of record analysis were derived. In addition, the system structure and database schema were designed, and a screen for managing and browsing records was presented. Through this study, it is expected that research on sports record management will be able to be actively conducted in the record management field.

  • This study proposes the formation of education service models using presidential archives based on ubiquitous technology. To accomplish these, this study analyzed various education programs of presidential archives in Korea and other countries. The reason behind the use of ubiquitous technology is to allow interinstitution cooperation and create synergy effects. With this, this technology is grafted onto the modified BIG6 Model, which is developed for information literacy. This study can be useful and valuable in the aspects of education, contents development, and service development.

  • The purposes of this study are to categorize the archival body of knowledge based on the analysis of two guidelines and websites of 10 archival graduate programs in the United States, and to make suggestions for the development of archival education in Korea. Basic knowledge, core knowledge, complementary knowledge, practical knowledge, and research knowledge are found as components of the archival body of knowledge. The basic knowledge is the ability to understand general circumstances related to records and archives. The core one is to master the required competence as archivists. The complementary one is to understand other disciplinary backgrounds and their various research methods. The practical one is to be obtained from field experiences and the research one is to make a scholastic contribution through a deep research process. Curriculum development for preservation, electronic records management, use of computer technologies, archival services and advocacy, more interdisciplinary courses and internship programs are suggested as important factors for the future archival education. And cooperative research and appointment of more faculty members are also suggested. Finally, the development of guideline for Korean archival graduate programs are strongly suggested.

  • With the rapid changes in the digital technology, it is necessary to shift to a new paradigm corresponding to the changing environment was recognized. This study actively explores the possibility of applying new technologies for recordkeeping. This study aimed to investigate the applicability of blockchain to recordkeeping and to develop a new model for recordkeeping based on it. Through a conceptual analysis of blockchain and consideration of the recordkeeping process, a blockchain model that is suitable for the authentication of records was proposed. For this the network structure, the structure of blockchain blocks, a consensus algorithm, and recordkeeping blockchain model were designed. It also predicted potential changes in digital records management when applying blockchain. It predicted change in governance aspects to implement a horizontal cooperation system among the archives.
