Methods: The dietary survey data of the fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2010 ~ 2012) were used. The children were grouped into either a child care center lunch group (n = 728) or home lunch group (n = 592) and their nutrients and food intakes were compared. Results: No differences in the 24-hr energy intake and energy intakes from lunch and dinner according to the lunch places were observed. The percentage of breakfast energy was lower in the child care center lunch group, whereas the percentage of snack energy was higher. In children aged 3 ~ 5 years, the sodium, potassium, and vitamin C intakes were high in the child care center lunch group. The 1 ~ 2 years and 3 ~ 5 year old children's vegetable intake from lunch was significantly higher in the child care center lunch group than in the home lunch group. Children aged 3 ~ 5 years in the child care center lunch group consumed more beans and fish at lunch. The adequacy of nutrients and food diversity of child care center lunch appear better than home lunch. • The purpose of this study is to analyse the effects of teachers'personal background (academic, education career) and institutional characteristic factors(founded facility type, class size, and curriculum organization type) on the quality of the classroom in early childhood education and care(ECEC) fields. This study is to explore the conditions for improving the quality of ECEC, looking back on a traditional paradigm focused on teacher education and qualifications. The hierarchical regression analysis was conducted through a survey as a research method. The results indicated that the effects of institutional characteristics were more influential than teachers' education on classroom quality. Public kindergartens and child care centers were reported to have higher effects than the private ones on classroom quality. Based on these results, policy implications and future research plans were suggested in perspective of improving the publicness of ECEC services.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze women's selection pattern on kindergarten/child care centers and private tutoring for young children. For this purpose, 1,810 women whose young children's age was between 2 and 6 were selected from KLoWF data. After categorizing the education centers as daycare center, kindergarten, and private institute, it was investigated the women's characteristics related to their decision making for selection of the centers. The results of survey data analyses showed that younger children's mothers preferred to send their children to daycare centers, older children's mothers did to kindergarten. In terms of their dual selection on education centers, the frequency of 6-old-year children attending kindergarten and private institutes was very high. As the children's age was increasing, the frequency of women's multiple selection on daycare center, kindergarten and private institute was also increasing. In addition, regardless of the women's job pattern and existence, they preferred to send children to daycare centers. With these findings, limitations and suggestions for the future studies were also discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the main and interaction effects of day-care experiences and maternal parenting behavior on preschoolers' externalizing and internalizing problem behaviors. A total of 248 preschoolers(112 boys and 136 girls) and their mothers participated in this study. Mothers provided information about their children's day-care experiences(i.e., age of entry, hours per week, days per week, and number of day care centers attended by the preschoolers), their parenting behavior, and their children's problem behavior. Data were analyzed using correlations, multiple and hierarchical regressions, and post-hoc analysis suggested by Aiken and West(1991). First, preschoolers who frequently changed day-care centers showed higher levels of aggression. Second, maternal logical explanation, coercive and neglecting parenting behavior significantly influenced preschoolers' externalizing and internalizing problem behavior. Finally, interactions of day-care experiences and maternal parenting behavior were significant in predicting preschoolers' problem behavior. These findings suggest that day-care experiences need to be considered with other family variables in predicting preschoolers' developmental outcomes.
