The exhaust gas from vehicle engines and industrial boilers contains considerable amount of harmful nitrogen monoxide(NO) which causes air pollusion and acid rain. To remove NO catalytic reduction processes using Cu ion exchanged ZSM-5 zeolite have been widely studied. In this study, an attempt was made to fabricate Cu/zeolite catalyst by using high energy ball mill. The catalytic performance of ball milled Cu/ZSM-5 zeolites is analyzed and optimum copper contents was determined. The processing variables were reaction temperature and copper contents. Complete removal of NO gas was obtained at the temperature of 553 K on 10wt.% CU/ZSM-5 mechanically alloyed composite powders. Mechanically alloyed CU/ZSM-5 catalyst showed homogeneous distribution of Cu in ZSM-5.

The semiconducting $MnSi_{1.73}$ compound has been recognized as a thermoelectric material with excellent oxidation resistance and stable characteristics at elevated temperature. In the present work, we applied mechanical alloying (MA) technique to produce $MnSi_{1.73}$ compound using a mixture of elemental manganese and silicon powders. The mechanical alloying was carried out using a Fritsch P-5 planetary mill under Ar gas atmosphere. The MA powders were characterized by the X-ray diffraction with Cu-$K{\alpha}$ radiation, thermal analysis and scanning electron microscopy. Due to the observed larger loss of Si relative to Mn during mechanical alloying of $MnSi_{1.73}$, the starting composition of a mixture Mn-Si was modified to $MnSi_{1.83}$ and then $MnSi_{1.88}$. The single $MnSi_{1.73}$ phase has been obtained by mechanical alloying of $MnSi_{1.88}$ mixture powders for 200 hours. It is also found that the grain size of $MnSi_{1.73}$ compound powders analyzed by Hall plot method is reduced to 40 nm after 200 hours of milling.

The oxidation behavior and the thermal stability of nanocrystalline Al-25Ti-8Mn intermetallic compound were investigated. $Al_3Ti$ intermetallic compound, which has a potential for high temperature structural material, was fabricated by mechanical alloying(MA) with $8at.\%$ Mn to enhance the thermal stability and ductility. And Al-25Ti-8Mn intermetallic compound was sintered by spark plasma sintering(SPS) at $700^{\circ}C$. After sintering process, cubic $Ll_2$ structure was maintained without phase transformation and the grain size was about 50nm. To investigate the oxidation behavior of the specimens, thermal gravimetric analysis(TGA) was performed at 700, 800, 900, and $1000^{\circ}C$ for 24 h in $O_2$. As the temperature increased from $700^{\circ}C\;to\;900^{\circ}C$ the weight gain of specimens increased. However at $1000^{\circ}C$, unlike the oxidation behavior of $700^{\circ}C\;to\;900^{\circ}C$, the weight gain of specimen decreased drastically and the transition from linear rate region to parabolic rate region occurred rapidly due to the dense $\alpha-Al_2O_3$.
A new class of compounds in the form of skutterudite structure, Fe doped $CoSb_3$ with a nominal composition of $Fe_xCo_{4-x}Sb_{12}$ ($0{\leq}x{\leq}2.5$), were synthesized by mechanical alloying of elemental powders followed by vacuum hot pressing. Nanostructured, single-phase skutterudites were successfully produced by vacuum hot pressing using as-milled powders without subsequent heat-treatments for the compositions of $x{\leq}1.5$. However, second phase was found to form in case of $x{\geq}2$, suggesting the solubility limit of Fe with Co in this system. Thermoelectric properties including thermal conductivity from 300 to 600 K were measured and discussed. Lattice thermal conductivity was greatly reduced by introducing a dopant up to x=1.5 as well as by increasing phonon scattering in nanostructured skutterudite, leading to enhancement in the thermoelectric figure of merit. The maximum figure of merit was found to be 0.32 at 600 K in the composition of $Fe_xCo_{4-x}Sb_{12}$.
Hydrogen and hydrogen energy have been recognized as clean energy sources and high energy carrier. Mg and Mg alloys are attractive hydrogen storage materials because of their lightweight and low cost materials with high hydrogen capacity (about 7.6 wt.%). However, the commercial applications of the Mg hydrides are currently hinder by its high absorption/desorption temperature, and very slow reaction kinetics. However, Ti and Ti based hydrogen storage alloys have been thought to be the third generation of alloys with a high hydrogen capacity, which makes it difficult to handle because of high reactivity. One of the most methods to develope kinetics was addition of transition metal. Therefore, Mg-Ti-Cr-Nb alloy was fabricated to add TiCrNb by hydrogen induced mechanical alloying. TiCrNb systems have included transition metals, low operating temperatures and hydrogen storage materials. As-received specimens were characterized using X-ray Diffraction analysis (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Thermo Gravimetric analysis/Differential Scanning Calorimetry (TG/DSC). $Mg-TiCr_{10}Nb$ systems were evaluated for hydrogen kinetics by Sievert's type Pressure-Composition-Isotherm (PCI) equipment. The operating temperature range was 473, 523, 573 and 623 K.
NiAl alloy powders were prepared by mechanical alloying method and bulk specimens were produced using hot isostatic pressing techniques. This study focused on the transformation behavior and properties of Ni-Al mechanically alloyed powders and bulk alloys. Transformation behavior was investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), XRD and TEM. Particle size distribution and microstructures of mechanically alloyed powders were studied by particle size analyzer and scanning electron microscope (SEM). After 10 hours milling, XRB peak broadening appeared at the alloyed powders with compositions of Ni-36at%Al to 40at%Al. The NiAl and $Ni_3Al$ intermetallic compounds were formed after water quenching of solution treated powders and bulk samples at $1200^{\circ}C$, but the martensite phase was observed after liquid nitrogen quenching of solution treated powders. However, the formation of $Ni_3Al$ intermetallic compounds were not restricted by fast quenching into liquid nitrogen. It is considered to be caused by fast diffusion of atoms for the formation of stable $\beta$(NiAl) phase and $Ni_3Al$ due to nano sized grains during quenching. Amounts of martensite phase increased as the composition of aluminium component decreased in the Ni-Al alloy, which resulted in the increasing damping properties.
Fabrication of soft magnetic composite powders for the $Fe_2O_3-Ca$ system by mechanical alloying(MA) has been investigated at room temperature. It is found that soft magnetic composite powders in which CaO is dispersed in ${\alpha}-Fe$ matrix are obtained by MA of $Fe_2O_3$ with Ca for 5 hours. Changes in magnetization and coercivity also reflect the details of the solidstate reduction process of hematite by pure metal of Ca during MA. The saturation magnetization of MA powders increases with increasing MA time and reaches a maximum value of 65 emu/g after 7 hours of MA. The average grain size of ${\alpha}-Fe$ in MA powders, estimated by diffraction line-width, gradually decreases with increasing MA time and reaches 52 nm after 5 hours of MA. It can also be seen that the coercivity of the 5-hour MA sample is fairly high at 190 Oe, suggesting that the grain refinement of already-produced ${\alpha}-Fe$ tends to clearly occur during MA.

Fabrication of nanocomposite material for the $Fe_2O_3-Al$ system by mechanical alloying (MA) has been investigated at room temperature. It is found that ${\alpha}-Fe/Al_2O_3$ nanocomposite powders in which $Al_2O_3$ is dispersed in ${\alpha}-Fe$ matrix are obtained by mechanical alloying of $Fe_2O_3$ with Al for 5 hours. The change in magnetization and coercivity also reflects the details of the solid state reduction process of hematite by pure metal of Al during mechanical alloying. Densification of the MA powders was performed in a spark plasma sintering (SPS) machine using graphite dies at $1000^{\circ}C$ and $1100^{\circ}C$ under 60 MPa. Shrinkage change after SPS of MA'ed sample for 5 hrs was significant above $700^{\circ}C$ and gradually increased with increasing temperature up to $1100^{\circ}C$. X-ray diffraction result shows that the average grain size of ${\alpha}-Fe$ in ${\alpha}-Fe/Al_2O_3$ nanocomposite sintered at $1100^{\circ}C$ is in the range of 180 nm. It can be also seen that the coercivity (Hc) of SPS sample sintered at $1000^{\circ}C$ is still high value of 88 Oe, suggesting that the grain growth of magnetic ${\alpha}-Fe$ phase during SPS process tend to be suppressed.
$Ti_{52}Al_{48}$ and $(Ti_{52}Al_{48})_{100-x}B_x(x=0.5, 2, 5)$ alloys have been Produced by mechanical milling in an attritor mill using prealloyed powders. Microstructure of binary $Ti_{52}Al_{48}$ powders consists of grains of hexagonal phase whose structure is very close to $Ti_2Al$. $(Ti_{52}Al_{48})_{95}B_5$ powders contains TiB2 in addition to matrix grains of hexagonal phase. The grain sizes in the as-milled powders of both alloys are nanocrystalline. The mechanically alloyed powders were consolidated by vacuum hot pressing (VHP) at 100$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours, resulting in a material which is fully dense. Microstructure of consolidated binary alloy consists of $\gamma$-TiAl phase with dispersions of $Ti_2AlN$ and $A1_2O_3$ phases located along the grain boundaries. Binary alloy shows a significant coarsening in grain and dispersoid sizes. On the other hand, microstructure of B containing alloy consists of $\gamma$-TiAl grains with fine dispersions of $TiB_2$ within the grains and shows the minimal coarsening during annealing. The vacuum hot pressed billets were subjected to various heat treatments, and the mechanical properties were measured by compression testing at room temperature. Mechanically alloyed materials show much better combinations of strength and fracture strain compared with the ingot-cast TiAl, indicating the effectiveness of mechanical alloying in improving the mechanical properties.

We have applied mechanical alloying (MA) to produce soft magnetic composite material using a mixture of elemental $Fe_2O_3$-Mg powders. An optimal milling and heat treatment conditions to obtain soft magnetic ${\alpha}$-Fe/MgO composite with fine microstructure were investigated by X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) measurement. It is found that ${\alpha}$-Fe/MgO composite powders in which MgO is dispersed in ${\alpha}$-Fe matrix are obtained by MA of $Fe_2O_3$ with Mg for 30 min. The saturation magnetization of ball-milled powders increases with increasing milling time and reaches to a maximum value of 69.5 emu/g after 5 h MA. The magnetic hardening due to the reduction of the ${\alpha}$-Fe grain size by MA was also observed. Densification of the MA powders was performed in a spark plasma sintering (SPS) machine at $800{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$ under 60 MPa. X-ray diffraction result shows that the average grain size of ${\alpha}$-Fe in ${\alpha}$-Fe/MgO nanocomposite sintered at $800^{\circ}C$ is in the range of 110 nm.
