  • The purpose of this study was to find related factors to success of smoking-cessation in according to general characteristic, smoking, smoking-cessation and mediation factors in participants of smoking-cessation clinic on public health center in Daejeon metropolitan city. We analyzed 2,125 participants registered in smoking-cessation clinic in 2007. We carried out frequency analysis to understand character of participants, $X^2$-test to verify significance between smoking-cessation success rate and character, and logistic regression analysis to understand significance between smoking-cessation success rate and each character. The smoking-cessation success rate during 6 month was 39.8%. In group of smoking-cessation success, male had higher success rate than female. And over 65 years old group had higher success rate than under 40 years old group. Jung gu public health center had higher success rate than other centers. Logistic regression analysis of the factor associated with smoking-cessation success rate showed statistical significance of age, public health center, 2 stage nicotine patch, total consultation times with smoking-cessation success rate. Total consultation times showed highest odd ratios than other significant factors. Therefore, we suggested that total consultation times has most significance with smoking-cessation success rate, and the consultation may be the most effective method in smoking-cessation clinic.

With multiple logistic regression, the factors causing the differences in the success rate for 6 months of the workers were as follows. - The odds ratios (ORs)(95% confidence interval, CI) of the age group of under 29 and 40-49 years were 0.10 (0.03-0.29) and 0.43 (0.24-0.76), respectively, compared to the 50 years and older group. The ORs (95% CI) of the daily average of smoking group of 11-20 and more than 21 were 0.52(0.34-0.80) and 0.46(0.24-0.90), respectively, when compared to the group of 1-10. The ORs (95% CI) of the supporting persons for quitting smoking group of with spouse and other family were 1.99(1.18-3.34), compared to the group with no one. • This study has targeted to comparatively analyze smoking cessation success rates and success factors among new enrollees and re-enrollees in Smoking Cessation Clinics for its efficient operation. A total of 319,908 smokers who were enrolled in the Smoking Cessation Clinics in one of 253 public health centers across the nation for more than 6 months from July 16, 2009 to July 15, 2010 were examined. According to the comparative analysis, the following results have been obtained. According to the results, it has been confirmed that it is necessary to determine why smoking cessation success rates are low and take additional efforts to increase the rates for the effective operation of smoking cessation clinics. In addition, smoking cessation success rates were higher when only BT(Behavior Therapy) was given than when both BT and NRT(Nicotine Replacement Therapy) were provided to new enrollees while they were lower when only BT was provided than when both BT and NRT were given to re-enrollees. Therefore, it is necessary to provide differentiated service types depending on the type of enrollment. Hence, it is also required for the government to take various approaches in terms of a direction for a smoking cessation policy.

  • The study was conducted as a quasi-experimental study targeting 60 patients with ischemic heart disease to determine how the smoking cessation program that uses telephone counseling and text messaging (short message) affects smoking cessation self-efficacy, nicotine dependence, co levels, and smoking cessation rate of the first, second experimental group at varying times of arbitration and control group. An examination of the effects of this program revealed the control group to have a significant increase in smoking cessation self-efficacy, smoking cessation rate than the first and second group but a significant decrease in the nicotine dependence, co levels. In addition, although the control group showed a significant increase in smoking cessation self efficacy, smoking cessation rate and a significant decrease in co levels than other groups, there was no difference in nicotine dependence. Therefore, a smoking cessation program that uses telephone counseling and text messaging (short message) for patients with ischemic heart disease worked for the smoking cessation rate and appeared to be more effective, depending on the times of arbitration.

  • The aim of this study was to find the factors related to smoking-cessation among citizens receiving smoking-cessation clinics' services in a public health center in Daejeon metropolitan city. The study subjects were 2,125 participants registered in "smoking-cessation clinic", public health centers in 2007. Frequency analysis, chi-squared test and multiple logistic regression analysis were used to determine the relationships between the success rate of smoking-cessation and the characteristics. The success rate of smoking-cessation during 6 months was 39.8%. Males had a higher rate than females, and people over 65 years of age had a higher rate than those less than 40 years of age. High blood pressure, drinking of more 2 times per week, regular exercise, CO under 10ppm had significantly relationships with the smoking-cessation rate. The other independent variables had no statistically significance with the smoking-cessation success rate. Logistic regression analysis showed that age, number of nicotine patches used and total consultation times had significantly relationships with the smoking-cessation success rate. The total consultation times showed the highest odds ratio than the other significant factors. This study suggests that regular consultations will be the most effective intervention towards maintaining smoking cessation programs of smoking-cessation clinics in public health centers.

  • This study examined the effects of a non-smoking program according to the stress and emotional condition of male office workers. As research subjects, 106 smokers at C company who participated in the campaign of "No Second-Hand Smoking and No Cigarette Smoke at Work" from April 25, 2011 to December, 2011 for 8 months were enrolled in this study. Apreliminary survey of the general characteristics, motivation to quit smoking, emotional condition, behavior to cope with stress, stress in life, hope, and the emotional variables of job satisfaction in the research subjects was carried out. The study undertook a pre-and-post effect analysis of the non-smoking program only with those who succeeded in quitting smoking. In terms of the general characteristics of the subjects, the success rate of quitting smoking was higher in those in their thirties and above and those who were married. No significant difference in the emotional variables was observed between those who were not successful and those who were. These results suggest that the motives for stopping smoking and effective dealing with stress or anxiety is important for male office workers to succeed in stopping smoking, based on which smoking cessation programs should be developed. In addition, the message of a smoking cessation campaign should be designed specifically for each target audience, effectively emphasizing the emotional aspects of each target group.

  • This study aimed to identify success factors of smoking cessation for 6 months in Adolescent smokers. Data were collected from January to December, 2008. The 925 adolescent smokers were registered smoking cessation clinic at public health center in Incheon. Data(demographic, smoking, smoking cessation) were analyzed by logistic regression. Major factors are attempting to quit smoking(no trial, OR=9.48), alcohol drinking(yes, OR=4.61), information source for registration(family, friends's ask, OR=3.94), cessation methods(cognitive+behavior+ nicotine alternative therapy, OR=2.45), gender(male, OR=1.78), grade in school(high schooler, OR=1.65), expiration CO concentration (OR=0.95), and nicotine dependency(OR=0.76). Therefore, smoking cessation policy for adolescence should be emphasized on smoking prevention as well as smoking cessation. We have to help the adolescent to succeed in smoking cessation when they attempt to quit smoking at first time. Female student smokers and middle school smokers should be given advice for smoking cessation motives and more times of counselling for smoking cessation. If adolescent smokers have high expiration CO concentration and high nicotine dependency, they should not only take cognitive-behavior therapy but also nicotine alternative therapy.
