If the nondestructive analysis is carried out by using an X-ray Fluorescence Analyzer(XRF) for ingredient analysis with the target of gold plated silverware that plates gold on a silver basis, a singular point showing big difference at the value of weight percent(wt.%) according to the electron orbit of the principal ingredient can be confirmed. The present research made reproduced samples and carried out comparative analysis in order to suggest a basis that can judge whether the technique of gold plated silverware was used in case of remains uneasy to understand with eyes by using this singular point. As a result, the same result as analysis results of actual remains could be seen in specimens manufactured by a mercury amalgam plating method. However, in case of gold and silver alloy specimens, it could be confirmed that the difference according to the electron orbit of the principal ingredients is slight unlike plated specimens. The reason appearing at plated specimens seems to be generated while absorbing XRF beam at plated layers by double structure due to plating instead of single material. Accordingly, if this result appearing at nondestructive analysis is used, it was confirmed that the application of the technique of gold plated silverware can be judged without observing its section.

Bronzes, Earthenwares and various artifacts were excavated from Pungnap earthen fortress in the early Baekje age in Korea. This study was performed in order to identify the manufacture technology of bronze artefacts and provenance of lead in bronzes. Microstructure and chemical composition results show that 3 of them are Cu-Sn-Pb alloys in which an intentional lead addition was carried out and one is tin bronze showing straight twin structure within crystal grains. Also $CuFeS_2$ or $Cu_5FeS_4$ was used as raw materials through the detection of S and Fe as trace elements. The lead isotope results could be matched with one of the zones of southern Korea and China on the East Asian map. This results shows that data were plotted either in zone 2 or zone 3 of the South Korean galena map. However, one of bronze artifacts was matched with the zone of Northern China.
In 1993, many bronze artifacts were excavated from the Sanoesa Temple(思惱寺), Chongju, Chungbuk. Twelve items were selected and chemically analyzed with AA Spectrometry and ICP-Atomic Emission Spectrometry. They were also observed under the optical microscopy and SEM. According to the results from chemical analysis, production method and use, these artifacts were classified into four groups: casting, wrought and welding products, and bells. Cast products, probably used for ritual, were alloy of 70% Cu, 10% Sn and 20% Pb. They showed ${\alpha}+{\beta}$ phase as a typical microstructure of casting. The ${\delta}$ phase was rarely observed due to the small amount of Sn. These artifacts included more lead than other alloys. They showed segregation like island-shape on the lead part. Wrought products used for daily too1s. were alloy of 80% Cu and 20% Sn. Since they were consist of ${\alpha}$ phase and martensite ${\beta}$ phase, it could be presumed that they were heat-treated. The production method could be identified from twinned grains in ${\alpha}$ phase. Lead was not included in because it had a bad effect to alloy. The bells were alloyed with 85% Cu, 10% Sn, 5% Pb or 90% Cu and 10% Sn. They show the dendrite structure because they were cast and alloyed with many tin. Weldinged were alloyed with 83% Cu, 12% Sn and 5% Pb. lt showed the fine dendrite structure because of fast cooling in air.
This study aims to extract manufacturing techniques by analysing metallurgical characteristics of the cast-iron pot from Bubjusa, examining corrosion status and microstructure with a optical microscope, SEM-EDS, micro vickers hardness tester and XRD. The microstructure analysis has presented that ferrite and partial portion of pearlite exist within the corroded outer layer. The analysis of the inner layer revealed that there is pearlite and graphite of feather shape. The one of the middle layer, which is placed between outer and inner layer, showed that corrosion has been heavily developed. Micro vickers hardness values range from 217Hv to 698Hv in constituent layers and such values lie within the ranges of the ancient iron relics. The result of EDS analysis for each microstructure presented that the outer layer has been more decarbonized than the inner layer. XRD analysis of iron corrosion compound revealed that Goethite and Hematite had been produced from the corrosive process of iron. The study concludes that the large iron pot was made by casting technique, and microstructure of inner layer had a gray cast iron. Outer layer has been decarbonized through repetitive process of heating and cooling. This results can be used as fundamental data for comparative study to reveal manufacturing techniques of large cast-iron pot.
Outdoor iron artefacts are easily corroded by affection of environmental pollutants directly. Especially they need to be removed $Cl^-$ ions, but outdoor iron artefacts are excluded for desalination owing to their special features. Therefore this study contains the conservation processes of an iron stele of the Joseon Dynasty as the sample as well as desalination experiments that were carried out the desalting method using spill pads and the immersion desalting method together in order to compare. Desalting methods were compared by analyses such as an optical and metallurgical microscope, SEM-EDS, pH meter, Ion Chromatography and X-ray diffraction. As a result of the analysis, the optical and metallurgical microscopy show that the corrosion products are constituted by the layers and the metallurgical microstructure is a white cast iron. The SEM-EDS results of corrosion products detected mainly Fe, O, and especially Cl upto 2.48wt%. The results of pH and anion analysis for the washing solution, the desalting method using spill pads shows the similar effect to the immersion desalting method. As a result of XRD analysis before and after desalting corrosion products, goethite, magnetite, lepidocrocite and akaganeite are detected before desalting, but akaganeite is not detected after desalting at the desalting methode using spill pads, which indicates to have an effect on desalination. Therefore the results show that the desalting method using spill pads has an effect on desalination similar to the immersing desalting method.
We observed the section and microstructure by Scanning Electron Mirrorscope (SEM) for 4 'Bowls, white porcelain with impressed floral design and sliver bound rim' and 1 'Dish, white porcelain with sliver bound rim', which was manufactured by reverse firing and metal bound rim was wrapped to the part of not being spread glaze at inlet, in Jingdezhen white porcelains, the relics dug from the seabed of Shinan conserved in National Museum of Korea, and found that the ingredient of metal rim was not silver but tin as a result of measuring by BEI of Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). And as a result of survey with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR) for checking the method of joining metal rim of mouth part, it was found that joining was made with materials made of lacquer.
A large number of metallic relics were excavated by a team of Kyungsang University museum (Nov. 25, 1985 - Jan. 29, 1986) from the groups of tombs located at No. 9 Mountain,Okchun Village, Sungsan-Ri, Ssangchak-Myon, Hyopchun-Kun, Kyungsangnam-Do which are believed to date back to Kaya period. The Research Institute of Cultural Properties was in charge performing scientific conservation and restoration for the iron cuirass and horse halmet (for one year and seven months, Feb. '86 - Sep. '87)The scientific processing for them are as follows :1. Taken Photo and record the actual conditions prior to conservation.2. Taken radiography3. Elimate Goethite ($\alpha$-FeOOH) layer on the surface using Air-brasive, remaining Magnetite ($Fe_3O_4$) layer.4. Treat to dechlorinize with 3% Sodium-Sesquicarbonate5. Protected the relics with Ruscoat acryl resin using vacuum infiltration method.6. Joint the sherd using Araldite and Microballoon mixture.7. Restored missing parts by Araldite SV 427 and HV 4278. Made record and taken photo after restoration Several hundred of sherds of relics, small or large, were restored by assortment which this method for the purpose of contributing to the further study of ancient Kaya history.* Conservator, National Research Institute of Cultural Properties.
Analysis of Flat board-shaped Lacquer ware excavated from Daho-ri was conducted. The result of species identification is identifed as Pinus spp. As a result of microscopic observation, lacquer fragment is consist of 5 layers and its thickness is about 100 ㎛. Infrared spectroscopy of the lacquer ware revealed that they had a very similar absorption band as refined lacquer, confirming that they were painted with lacquer. Result of Analysis for Circular metal ornament is alloy smelted by tin and lead. It is called Pewter. While The species of wooden objects investigated until now is broad-leaved tree; the species of flat board-shaped lacquer ware is conifer.

Laser cleaning have been found to be a useful cleaning tool to remove contaminants without inducing damage to the substrate and making secondary pollutant. In this study, the effect of Nd:YAG laser cleaning system, emitting at 1064 nm and 532 nm, on acrylic resin applied onto copper coupons and pieces of bronze was investigated. The samples after laser cleaning tests were examined using microscopy, FT-IR, SEM-EDS. As a result, the acrylic resin could be removed from most of the samples at low laser energy density. Laser wavelength 532 nm was more effective than 1064 nm because of using lower laser energy density, which could reduce heat damage to substrates. Although the acrylic resin was easily removed, it revealed melted surfaces and removed bronze patina which must remain. The problems should be solved by future studies using different laser system or laser wavelengths.

The corrosion product of archaeological iron objects is supposed to be removed because it causes re-corrosion. So far it is removed by scapel and sand blaster but they depend on the skill and experience of a conservator and the glass-dust of the sand blaster is harmful to humans. Therefore this study applies a laser cleaning system which is used in various industrial cleaning processes, to remove corrosion product from archaeological iron objects. In addition, this work studies the alternation of corrosion product after laser irradiation, which evaluates the reliability of the laser cleaning system. Optical microscopy, SEM-EDS, XRD, Raman have been used to observe and analyse the surface of the objects. The results show the capacity of laser cleaning some corrosion product, but blackening appears with increasing pulses and laser energy, and some corrosion products, goethite and hematite, are partially altered to magnetite. These problems, blackening and alternation of corrosion product, should be solved by further studies which find the optimal laser irradiation condition and use a wetting agent.
