  • This study investigated the environmental factors and conducted a RAPD analysis for a better understanding of the environmental characteristics and regional genetic variation in samples from 18 different areas of Viola diamantiaca. The habitats are mostly located on the slopes of mountains facing north at an altitude ranging from 614 m to 1,462 m above sea level with angles of inclination ranging from 3 degrees to 30 degrees. A total of 268 vascular plant taxa are identified in 35 quadrates of 18 habitats. The importance value of V. diamantiaca is 11.58%, and four highly ranked species, Sasa borealis (5.61%), Meehania urticifolia (5.21%), Ainsliaea acerifolia (3.62%), Pseudostellaria palibiniana (3.60%) are considered to have an affinity with V. diamantiaca in their habitats. The degree of their average species diversity is 1.36, while this metric for their evenness and dominance are 0.89 and 0.07, respectively. The average field capacity of the soil is 25.99%, with organic matter at 17.47%, and the pH is 5.19. The soil texture was confirmed as sandy loam of eleven and loam of seven. The result of the RAPD analysis, among 78 bands amplified with a primer, 64 (84.6%) showed polymorphism. Eighteen populations could be classified into five groups with similarity coefficient values ranging from 0.53 to 0.86. The Mt. Jiri population, which is geographically segregated, shows basal branching within the 18 populations. Five populations, including two in the southern district in Gangwon-do and three in Chungcheongbuk-do, form a distinct clade. Four populations in the central district of Gangwon-do and Mt. Bohyeon in the Gyeongsangbuk-do clade form a sister to the clade containing two populations in Gyeonggi-do and five populations of the northern district in Gangwon-do. The Mt. Gariwang population is placed between the southern district and the central district in the Gangwon-do clades.

  • The drug consists of the dried entire plant of Viola diamantica (family Violaceae). It is used for the treatment of acute pyogenic diseases such as boil and carbuncles; also as tumor, high fever, tuberculosis and astringent hemostatic. Two flavonol glycosides have been isolated from the aerial parts of Viola diamantica and could be identifed as kaempferol 7-rhamnoside and kaempferol 3,7-dirhamnoside (bright yellow needle crystal, mp $225^{\circ}$, $C_{27}\;H_{30}\;O_4\;4H_2O$). Kaempferol 7-rhamnoside and kaempferol 3,7-dirhamnoside were first isolated from Viola diamantica.

This investigations resulted in 804 taxa consisted of 680 species, 1 subspecies, 111 varieties, and 12 forms of 383 genera under 97 families, and totally in 973 taxa (21.14% of all vascular plants in Korea) of 818 species, 1 subspecies, 138 varieties and 16 forms of 418 genera under 105 families on addition of voucher specimens in the previous researches. Forests of the investigated areas were generally mixed of Pinus densiflora and deciduous trees. The areas with comparatively excellent vegetation were valley from Guryong-sa (temple) to Biro-bong (summit) via Seryeom-pokpo (fall) in Mt. Chiak-san, and Keunseong-gol (valley) and eastern slope from Taegibungyo-teo to Naksu-dae (fall) in Mt. Taegi-san. 10 families with abundantly collected species were Compositae, Graminae, Rosaceae, Ranunculaceae, Leguminosae, Cyperaceae, Liliaceae, Saxifragaceae, Umbelliferae and Labiatae in order, and they occuied 49.12% of all collected taxa. • The vascular plants in Baekdudaegan of the South Korea were recorded of 1,477 taxa; 126 families, 641 genus, 1,248 species, 3 subspecies, 204 varieties, 22 forma. From the floristic point of view, Jirisan, Backunsan and Duckyusan District in the Baekdudaegan belongs to the southern province in Korea, appeared to Cephalotaxus koreana, Lindera obtusiloba, Lindera erythrocarpa, Lindera glauca, Izex macropoda, Meliosma myriantha, Melisoma oldhami and Stewartia koreana. But on the top regions of these mountains more than 1,000m above the sea level were contained many alpine plants. And on the top regions and ridgeline parts of Duckyusan and Jirisan were the middle province, owing to Betula costata, Betula ermani, Ulmus laciniata, Isopyrum raddeanum, Hylomecon vemale, Viola diamantica, Vaccinium koreanum, Heloniopsis orientalis, Disporum ovale, Symplocarpus renifolius and Veronica arvensis. These results were epresented that plant species of the middle province moved to the South along the ridgeline of Baekdudaegan, on the other hand plants of southern province had biological niche of low ground according to go toward the North.
