  • Although there ate many studies on cross-cultural comparison of advertising appeals, very little is known about how receivers from different cultures process visual images in global advertising. The purpose of this study is to examine how cultural differences between East Asians and Westerners influence the cognitive process of visual images from standardized global advertising by employing the Nisbett's framework of holistic/analytic thought. Nisbett contends that East Asian tend to attend to the context and the relations between objects and contexts as holistic thinkers while Americans tend to see the worlds analytically. The results of a experimental study conducted using 80 subjects from Korea and the United States suggest that Korean participants are more likely to mention relatively peripheral, nonsalient, or background information than are American participants. Thus, this study support the Nisbett's notion that East Asians are more sensitive to contextual information than are Westerners and challenge the belief that standardized visual images are part of a "universal language".

  • This study aims to analyze the characteristics of transnational cigarette companies' strategies to expand the female market in Korea after the market opening of 1988. Focusing on 'Virginia Slims' and 'Finesse', which are the PM and BAT's representative female brands, this study explores whether their typical advertising strategies were transformed in Korean market. After 3years from the market opening, 'Virginia Slims' gave up its brand identity and the strategy was so successful that 'Virginia Slims' continued to be 2nd best-selling brand in the imported cigarette market in Korea. In contrast, 'Finesse' maintained a typical women's cigarette image during the 1990s and consequently occupied the highest brand awareness as a female cigarette but lower market share than Virginia Slims. TTCs adapted to a doubly obstructed Korea market with its strong taboo against female smoking and a comparatively stronger legal ban on all cigarette ads targeting women. However, diverse indirect cigarette ads and promotions, which circumvented regulations, suggest that ads transforming was not to give up Korean female customers. Furthermore, the cigarette ads that the soft and mild taste of female brands are associated with healthy image rather than gendered image may appeal to Korean women without touching their emotions and desires.

  • This study, after analyzing 2019 Cannes Lion winners, suggests five creative trends. It was found that these global five creative trends are multi-sensory experience, integration between data and creativity, real humanism, brand activist, and consideration for socially disadvantaged. Not only visual impact or stimulus, but audio or scent could be utilized in an effort to stimulate consumers and promote brands. In 2019 Cannes Lions advertising campaigns which sought to find consumer insight through data and apply it to creativity received applause from Cannes Lions judges. In addition, advertising campaigns based on real humanism suggest that attitudes are best changed through positive experiences. Nike's 'Dream Crazy' campaign is a good example which shows a company's philosophy and brand purposes. Brands are becoming activists and are being encouraged to take real action, and for good reason. Lastly, projects such as Ikea's 'ThisAbles' and Microsoft's 'Xbox Adaptive Controller' are contrived for the socially disadvantaged.
