  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the influence of flow conditions of a boundary layer on the near-wake of a flat plate. Various attaching positions of tripping wires were selected to change flow conditions on a boundary layer. Laminar, transitional, and turbulent boundary layer conditions at 0.98C from the leading edge are imposed to investigate the evolution of symmetric and asymmetric wake. An x-type hot-wire probe(55P61) is employed to measure at 8 stations of the near-wake region. Measured mean velocity distributions are presented in terms of similarity parameter. It is found that the symmetric wake collapses well to the universal profile in the central part of the wake. However, the universal profile is not suitable in describing an asymmetric wake.

  • The effect of free stream turbulence on the flow characteristics behind a circular cylinder is investigated in the present experimental study. The various free stream turbulent intensities are generated by different combinations of cylinder locations and grid shapes. Split film sensor with constant temperature anemometer is used to measure the local instantaneous velocity components. Experimental results demonstrate the large scale coherent structures are rapidly distorted and the Strouhal number is decreased with increasing free stream turbulent intensity.

  • An experimental study is carried out to investigate the Reynolds number effects on the near-wake of an airfoil oscillating in pitch. An NACA 4412 airfoil is sinusoidally pitched about the quarter chord point between the angle of attack -6$^{\circ}$ and +6$^{\circ}$. A hot-wire anemometer is used to measure the turbulent intensity in the near-wake region of an NACA 4412 airfoil. The freestream velocities of present work are 3.4, 12.4, 26.2 m/s, and the corresponding Reynolds numbers are $5.3{\times}10^4,\;1.9{\times}10^5,\;4.1{\times}10^5$ and the reduced frequency is 0.1. Axial turbulent intensity profiles are presented to show the Reynolds number effects on the near-wake region behind an airfoil oscillating in pitch. All the cases in these measurements show that the turbulent intensities by the change of the Reynolds number are very large at the lowest Reynolds number $R_N=5.3{\times}10^4$; and are small at the other Reynolds number $(R_N=1.9{\times}10^5\;and\;4.1{\times}10^5)$ in the near-wake region. The significant difference of turbulent intensity between $R_N=5.3{\times}10^4,\;and\;1.9{\times}l0^5$ is observed. A critical value of the Reynolds number in the near-wake of an oscillating NACA 4412 airfoil which indicates laminar separation, no separation or turbulent separation exists in the range between $R_N=5.3{\times}10^4\;and\;1.9{\times}10^5$.

  • An experimental. study is carried out to investigate the near-wake characteristics of an airfoil oscillating in pitch. An NACA 4412 airfoil is sinusoidally pitched about the quarter chord point between the angle of attack -6$^{\circ}$ and +6$^{\circ}$. A hot-wire anemometer is used to measure the phase-averaged mean velocities in the near-wake region of an oscillating airfoil. The freestream velocities of present work are 3.4, 12.4, 26.2 m/s, and the corresponding Reynolds numbers are 5.3${\times}10^4$, 1.9${\times}10^5$, 4.l${\times}10^5$, and the reduced frequency is 0.1. Streamwise velocity profiles are presented to show the Reynolds number effects on the near-wake region behind an airfoil oscillating in pitch. All the cases in these measurements show that the velocity defects by the change of the Reynolds number are very large at the lowest Reynolds number $R_N$=5.3${\times}10^4$: and are small at the other Reynolds numbers ($R_N$=1.9${\times}10^5$ and 4.l${\times}10^5$) in the near-wake region. A significant difference of phase-averaged mean velocity between 5.3${\times}10^4$, and 1.9${\times}10^5$ is observed. The present study shows that a critical value of Reynolds number in the near-wake of an oscillating airfoil exists in the range between 5.3${\times}10^4$, and 1.9${\times}10^5$.

  • In this study the development of the two dimensional flowfield around an impulsively translated circular cylinder is numerically simulated using the diffusion vortex method. A detailed streamline pattern of fore wake and main wake of Re=1200, 9500 flowfields are investigated. The results of streamline pattern, the size of main wake and the axial velocities along the rear symmetry axis of the circular cylinder show good agreement with the reported experimental results. The long term wake delvelopment for Re=1200 flowfield was calculated up to ${\tau}=50$. The vortex shedding frequency shows the similar value as that of reported.

  • For accurate AEP prediction in a wind farm, it is necessary to effectively calculate the wind speed reduction and the power loss due to the wake effect in each wind direction. In this study, a computer program for AEP prediction considering directional wake effect was developed. The results of the developed program were compared with the actual AEP of the wind farm and the calculation result of existing commercial software to confirm the accuracy of prediction. The applied equations are identical with those of commercial software based on existing theories, but there is a difference in the calculation process of the detection of the wake effect area in each wind direction. As a result, the developed program predicted to be less than 1% of difference to the actual capacity factor and showed more than 2% of better results compared with the existing commercial software.

  • Two-dimensional turbulent wake flow behind a circular cylinder is investigated experimentally by suing linearized constant temperature hot wire anemometer. Turbulent fluctuations and mean velocity defects are measured in the rage of 5 dia.- 500 dia. downstream from the cylinder and for the Reynolds numbers of 2000-4000. Results with statistical treatment and digital data processing techniques are as follows: (1) The transition region from near wake to far wake is 30 dia. - 50 dia. downstream from the cylinder. (2) In the near wake, it is found that strong periodic ( f=845Hz) coherent structure exists. (3) It shows that the inertial subrange is 180Hz-2000Hz in self preservation region.

  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate influence of flow conditions on a boundary layer to the near-wake of a flat plate. The flow condition in the vicinity of trailing edge that is influenced by upstream condition history is an essential factor that determines the physical characteristics of a near-wake. Various tripping wires were used to change boundary layer flow condition of upstream at the freestream velocity of 6.0 m/sec. Measurements of the boundary layer and near-wake according to the change of upstream conditions were conducted by using both I-probe(55P14 for boundary layer) and X-probe(55P61 for wake). Normalized velocity profiles of the boundary layer were shown the flow types such as laminar boundary layer, transition, and turbulent boundary layer at 0.95C from the leading edge. The velocity and turbulence intensity profiles of the near-wake for the case of laminar boundary layer at the flat plate surface exhibited a defect and a double peak showing perfect symmetry, respectively.
