  • This paper describes requirements and test methods for the safety of electromyographs and evoked response equipments to be used for medical examination of the central nerve system and motor-sensory functions in cortex. We first establish internationally harmonized requirements for the safety, and then propose a test procedure and test methods corresponding to the requirements based on the international standards. However requirements for the performance of each equipments are not specified in order to admit maker's specifications. Using a electromyography equipment we verified validity of the test methods proposed. Results of this study can be used as a standard for approval of Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA).

  • Methods for measuring the physical workload of construction workers are classified into posture assessment techniques (i.e., OWAS, RULA, etc.) and physiological measurement techniques (i.e., EMG, heart rate, etc.). The one does not quantify the workload on a specific body part of a worker by considering the weight of the hand tools or materials on hand and time for holding a particular posture. This paper presents a procedure for evaluating a physical demand using the electromyography (EMG) sensor. This study compares the EMG measurement and the posture assessment. The case study is carried out on a masonry operation.

  • This study deals with experimental studies on electromyogram (EMG) measurements and functional electrical stimulation (FES) for the rehabilitation of a shoulder-joint. Based on the structure, motion, and main functions of the musculoskeletal system in a shoulder-joint, the muscles playing a major role for the motion in the sagittal plane were selected for the experiment. First, the surface electromyogram of the main muscles was measured according to the joint angle. The results showed that the change in the surface EMG was linearly proportional to the change in the joint angle. Second, the joint angle was measured during FES at shoulder muscles. The results showed that the joint angle increased as the FES current increased in a certain range of FES. It was confirmed that the willingness of muscles to move could be detected by measuring EMG and that the generation of muscle tension could be assisted by FES for active rehabilitation.

  • This paper presents a human-machine interaction based on a realtime upper limb motion prediction method using surface electromyography (sEMG). The motions were predicted using an artificial neural network algorithm and sEMG signals which are acquired from five muscles, and then a manipulator was controlled to follow after the predicted motions. Upper limb motions were restricted to 2D vertical plane with the contact condition between a user and an end-effector of manipulator. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method, experiments using developed method and using a goniometer were performed. The results showed that the proposed real-time motion prediction method can be implemented a human-machine interaction system.

  • This study proposes service content that helps people stay in the right posture in their daily lives to manage the pain of musculoskeletal diseases. Resistance factors and induction factors were analyzed through a survey of 143 people and Ethnography. Based on this, we propose an app service that helps practice the right posture by using EMG sensors and wearable devices. This study is meaningful in alleviating musculoskeletal pain and further improving the quality of life by helping to practice and maintain the right posture with service content based on self-objectification through user posture habit analysis.

  • Electromygram was measured in three different cases; not wearing of a helmet, wearing of a 920g helmet, and wearing of a 1310g helmet, and it was revealed that there was a high level of muscle activities on the opposite side (sternocleidomastoid muscle) while the head and the neck were moving right and left and muscle activities of the curve and of the hyperextension were found to be not significant. Especially, the presence of a helmet seemed to cause a difference in a level of muscle activities on the deltoid and erector spine muscles while lifting or lowering with a weight placed on the deniz backboard. Therefore, it would be possible to assume that this newly developed smart helmet would not affect muscles around the necks of paramedics if they do not move their necks and heads right and left while lowering or lifting a patient using the deniz backboard. In addition, in case of the deltoid and erector spine muscles, it is shown that an increase in the degree of movement could lead to an increase in the level of muscle activities on the muscles controlling of the corresponding action, which are waist and back muscles. Despite it, it would be possible to prevent possible injuries and/or muscular and skeletal diseases around the lumbar by fully complying with a basic rule of straightening of the waist while making a power-lifting motion.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare EMG activities on the lower limb muscles during power walking and mormal walking. Seventeen subjects who have no known musculoskeletal disorders performed walking exercise at a cadence of 140 beats/min. After surface electrodes were attached to rectus femoris, vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, biceps femoris, tibialis anterior, medial gastrocnemius, averageed IEMG and peak IEMG, were measured. The result showed that the power walking did influence the averaged IEMG and peak IEMG. The EMG activity of the quadriceps during power walking was significantly higher than the corresponding values in normal walking during most phases. The averaged IEMG and peak IEMG of gastrocnemius muscles at the end of the double limb stance increased significantly when going from normal walking to power walking. The results indicate that power walking had greater effect on EMG activities on the lower limb muscles and demonstrate that the wide range of benefits can be obtained from power walking in respect to health and fitness. This study suggests that power walking has the potential to improve aerobic fitness and assist in weight management.
