  • The stock identification of small yellow croaker. Pseudosciaena Polyactis from Mokpo area was carried out using molecular biological methods such as mt-DNA restriction fragment length polymorphism(RFLP) and the N-terminal fragment polymorphism of muscle actin obtained after protease digestion. The entire mt-DNA genomic size from the small yellow croaker at Mokpo area was estimated to be about $16\pm0.2$ Kb. Furthermore, fourteen restriction endonucleases revealed a total of 37 restriction sites to the mt-DNA molecule, however, eight of the fourteen enzymes showed a significant restriction site variation. Six of the enzymes examined produced a single restriction profile for all individuals surveyed, indicating that they don't react on the same mt-DNA obtained from small yellow croaker. The Staphylococcus aureus $V_8$ protease is able to cleave the muscle actin of small yellow croaker and to yield a N-terminal peptide of 26 and 16 KDa, respectively.

  • Parke and Waters' model[1] of muscle-based face deformation was used to develop a system that can synthesize facial expressions when the pleasure-displeasure and arousal-sleep coordinate values of internal states are specified. Facial expressions sampled from a database developed by Chung, Oh, Lee and Byun [2] and its underlying model of internal states were used to find rules for face deformation. The internal - state model included dimensional and categorical values of the sampled facial expressions. To find out deformation rules for each of the expressions, changes in the lengths of 21 facial muscles were measured. Then, a set of multiple regression analyses was performed to find out the relationship between the muscle lengths and internal states. The deformation rules obtained from the process turned out to produce natural-looking expressions when the internal states were specified by the pleasure-displeasure and arousal-sleep coordinate values. Such a result implies that the rules derived from a large scale database and regression analyses capturing the variations of individual muscles can be served as a useful and powerful tool for synthesizing facial expressions.

  • This study examined the effects of the forward head posture on the maximum mouth opening of the jaw joint and the muscle activity and asymmetry of the temporalis and masseter. The craniovertebral angle was measured in 50 subjects (23.10±2.73 years) who met the selection requirements of the study. The maximum mouth opening, muscle activity, and muscle asymmetry were measured by reducing 0%, 10%, and 20%. As the craniovertebral angle decreased, the maximum mouth opening decreased (p<.001), the muscle activity of the right and left temporalis decreased (p<.001), and the muscle activity of the left temporalis also decreased. (p<.01). The asymmetry rate of the added muscles of the left and right temporalis, left and right temporalis, and masseter increased according to the change in condition (p<.01). The results of this study are expected to help establish a treatment strategy and comprehensive diagnosis for the temporomandibular joint and present a theoretical basis of manual therapy and therapeutic exercises used for the treatment of TMD.

  • In this study, we investigated the effects of five EMS lumbar back pressure belts produced on an anatomical basis on lumbar spine stabilization. Five core muscles were selected, including the urinal, vertebral column, endotracheal, external abdominal, and large back muscles, and patterns were designed using a conductive fabric considering the appropriate muscle shape and pain-causing points. We experimented with four motions to examine the effects of different EMS abdominal compression belts on lumbar spine stabilization. Five healthy men in their 20s were selected. The selection conditions include no back pain history for the past three months, no restricted movements through pre-inspection, and the muscular strength of the body should belong to the normal grade. Using SLR, the sequence of experimental actions was chosen from the following but not limited to left-hand, body-hand, and back-line forces. Resting between movements lasted for 2 min, and the experiments were conducted after wearing the EMS abdominal pressure belt. Electrical stimulation was applied for 10 min to increase blood flow and muscle activation. The statistics of the experimental results were analyzed for specific differences by conducting the Wilcoxon and Friedman tests with nonparametric tests. The ranking results of each pattern were successfully assessed in the order of 5, 4, 3, 1, 2 for the five patterns, and we could identify slightly more significant results for experimental behavior associated with each muscle movement. Patterns produced based on anatomy showed differentiated effects when electric stimulation was applied to each muscle in different shapes, which could improve the stabilization of the lumbar spine in everyday life or training to the public. Based on these results, subsequent research would focus on developing smart healthcare clothing that is practical in daily life by employing different anatomical mechanisms, depending on the back pain, to utilize trunk-type tights.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of botulinum toxin type A on masseter muscle atrophy and the extent of masseter muscle affected from the injection site in relation to injection dose, with and without occlusal splint therapy through computed tomographic measurement. 32 volunteers were divided into four groups - group 25U (injection dose of 25 unit), group 25Us (injection dose of 25 unit with occlusal splint), group 35U (injection dose of 35 unit), group 35Us (injection dose of 35 unit with occlusal splint). Each group consisted of 8 people. 3 positions (position 1, 2, 3 - 10mm, 20mm and 40mm from the inferior border of the mandible, respectively) were selected for the evaluation of the masseter muscle change. The following results were obtained. 1. The thickness and the cross-sectional area of the masseter muscle had reduced in all groups except for the right side thickness at position 3 of group 25U and group 25Us, and the right side thickness as well as the left side cross-sectional area at position 3 of group 35Us. In group 35Us, the thickness and the cross-sectional area of the masseter muscle had reduced significantly in all positions (P < 0.05). 2. There was no significant difference in the masseter muscle change between the injection dose of 25unit and that of 35unit. 3. The groups with occlusal splint showed greater reduction of the masseter muscle thickness than the other groups (P < 0.05). From the above results, botulinum toxin type A injection together with occlusal splint therapy in the treatment of masseter muscle hypertrophy would be clinically effective.

  • The aim of the present study was to compare the strength, balance, and flexibility across two age groups (older adults vs. young adults). The isokinetic muscle function, ankle ROM, trunk forward flexibility, stability, and antropometric data for the elderly and 46 university students were collected. The results indicated that male older adults possessed relatively low flexibility (2.97cm) among the groups and showed better stability in the right foot than in the left foot and $35^{\circ}$ of plantar flexion ROM, which was not in the normal range. Their peak strength at the knee joint was below 50% of their counterpart. They revealed a hamstring deficit of 18.55%, ankle eversion deficit of 23.08%, and ankle inversion deficit of 19.19%. The results indicated that female older adults possessed comparable flexibility compared to female young adults. The reciprocal muscle strength ratio of both knees was under 50%, and the deficit was 14.32% (extension) and 19.73% (flexion). The ankle plantar flexion peak torque was approximately 62% (left) and 73% (right) of WS's. The ankle dorsi flexion deficit was 25.05% and the plantar flexion was 26.86%. The eversion deficit was 19.97% and the inversion was 21.09%. These results will be significant in establishing an elderly fitness enhancement program and policy.

  • This study performed a trichlorfon (TCF) residue and pharmacokinetic analysis with Japanese eels, Anguilla japonica, to obtain baseline data to establish the maximum residue level (MRL) of TCF in A. japonica. After dipping A. japonica in 30 ppm and 150 ppm of TCF at 28℃ and 18℃, drug residue in the body was analyzed with LC-MS/MS, and these results were further analyzed with the PK solver program to obtain the pharmacokinetic parameters of TCF in the serum, muscles, and liver. The maximum concentrations (Cmax) in the serum, muscles, and liver were 25.87-357.42, 129.91-1043.73, and 40.47-375.20, respectively, and the time to maximum concentration (Tmax) was 0.13-1.32h, 1.17-3.34h, and 0.14-5.40h, respectively. The terminal elimination half-life (T1/2) was 2.13-3.92h, 5.30-10.35h, and 0.65-13.81h, respectively. In the 30 mg/L concentration group, TCF was not detected in the serum of eels 96 hours after bathing, and was below the detection limit after 336 hours in muscle and liver. On the other hand, in the 150 mg/L concentration group, TCF was not detected in the serum of eels 336 hours after bathing, but was detected in muscle and liver at 336 hours. In conclusion, the results of this study would be useful in establishing the MRL of TCF in farmed A. japonica.

  • Sarcopenia is a leading cause of increased medical and nursing care costs among the elderly. In Korea, preventive measures for sarcopenia are mostly targeted toward the general elderly population without specific diseases. However, it is also necessary to implement measures for elderly individuals living in nursing homes and hospitals, where the prevalence of sarcopenia is high. Currently, computed tomography and/or magnetic resonance imaging are considered standard diagnostic tools. However, their complexity and time-consuming nature make them unsuitable for clinical use. The exact pathophysiological mechanisms of sarcopenia are unclear, as they involve various molecular biological pathways, including decreased exercise, protein and nutrient intake, changes in testosterone and growth hormone, and inflammation. Sarcopenia symptoms can lead to several diseases, such as osteoporosis, fractures, dementia, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Vitamin B deficiency is a significant factor in sarcopenia induction, with B vitamins being directly involved in energy and protein metabolism and nerve function. Vitamin B deficiency can lead to neuromuscular and neurogenic disorders, which often overlap with sarcopenia. Suboptimal intake of B vitamins, malabsorption, and anorexia are common among the elderly. This study aims to provide information on the role of water-soluble B vitamins in preventing and controlling muscle mass loss and deterioration among the elderly with sarcopenia. In addition, we discuss the potential of myokines from the B vitamin family in modulating sarcopenia.

  • The effects of inspiratory muscle training in conjunction with aerobic exercise on inspiratory muscle strength, pulmonary function, and maximal oxygen uptake(VO2max) were examined. Twenty four healthy collegiate men were divided into three groups; respiratory muscle training group(RTG; n=8), running exercise group(REG; n=8), and both respiratory muscle training and running group(BTG; n=8). Their pulmonary function, maximal inspiratory pressures(PImax), and VO2max were assessed before and after intervention. RTG underwent inspiratory muscle training(IMT) with load set to 50 % of PImax, 30 times per session, twice a day, 4 days a week REG ran on a treadmill at 70-75 % of VO2max for 30 min a day, 4 days a week. BTG participated both IMT and the running exercise. Participant's anthropometric parameters and pulmonary function were not changed. VO2max increased by 6.1±3.3 %, 5.9±6.6 %, and 10.0±8.3 % in RTG, REG, and BTG, respectively(p< .05), and PImax also increased by 21.7±14.3 %, 19.7±12.0 %, and 27.0±12.1 % in RTG, REG, and BTG, respectively, but no group differences were found. Based on the study, although statistically insignificant, BTG showed the biggest increase of VO2max and PImax indicating a possible synergic effect of inspiratory muscle training and aerobic exercise on respiratory responses.
